Serving People in our Community
Kirkin’ of the Tartans
It was another successful year for Kirkin’ of the Tartans. We had
some new Tartans that were presented and we saw several new
faces. The Aladdin Shrine Pipes and Drums Band graced our
presence again with their beautiful bagpipe music. I don’t know
about anyone else, but I had tears in my eyes when they played
Amazing Grace with the Organ. What a wonderful service to
remind us of not just the heritage of our church, but our own
family heritage.

A Note from Your Deacons
Our children’s coat drive for the Salvation Army was a wonderful
success thanks to so many of you. We “ended up” (quotation marks
because they keep coming) with 166 coats. I’ve heard one little girl
already received one and was so excited! Thank you Second
Presbyterian members. We also were overwhelmed with generosity
from stores. At one store Tim was asked why he was buying so many
coats. When he explained, they gave him an additional 20% off.
Back to the racks to find another coat to purchase with those savings.
When he brought those coats forward, two salesclerks said they
would like to donate four coats on their own. Back to the racks went
Tim again. We live in a truly wonderful community.
Your Deacons have also begun a new ministry providing “Care Bags”
for members going through chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
Let us know if you hear of someone who might need a Care Bag.
Hopefully they will help in multiple ways.

The Coordinating Team of the Presbyterian Women of
Second Presbyterian Church would like to say THANK
YOU to everyone who contributed to the Women’s

You Can Buy Fair Trade Coffee!
“The best way to honor the farmers who grow the coffee is to respect the fact that coffee is unique. Everywhere that it comes from has a slightly different profile. When you get into the flow of things and everything is going right, it’s one of the best things in
the world.” – Sarah Hrisa, Equal Exchange Lead Coffee Roaster.
Good products - at a good price – for a good cause!
Our stock item is Breakfast Blend Coffee (beans, ground, or K-cups, $7 each), available during Fellowship Time the last Sunday of each month. You can also contact Ruth or John Cooper any time for a special delivery.
The Story of the Bible, our current study, has brought us through the Protestant Reformation. Coming up we will learn about the King James Bible, and other subsequent translations. This history of the Bible is truly inspirational!
Everyone is always welcome! You don’t have to come every week. Please join us any time you can.

Gratitude : A Healthy Choice
Gratitude is such a powerful thing. Dr. Robert A. Emmons, professor at the University of California, Davis, has conducted multiple studies to determine the effects of gratitude on our health. In these studies, he has asked participants to keep a daily journal. Some of the participants were instructed to use their journal to write down sources of aggravation and annoyance while others were instructed to write down things for which they are grateful. He then studied the participants physical, psychological, and social health at the end of this time of journaling. He has found that the group that focuses on gratitude shows a significant improvement in things like: immune system health, blood pressure, alertness and energy, joy and pleasure, compassion, forgiveness, and connections with others. In short, they are healthier physically, emotionally, and socially.
The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the defining factors in the month of November. It makes this month into a great time to think again about all the things for which we are grateful. Gratitude is a central activity of the Christian faith. In fact, one of the words that is often used for the Sacrament of Communion, Eucharist, is derived from the Greek word for thanksgiving. What would happen if the church really worked hard on keeping gratitude as a central aspect of our life together, our worship, and our witness to the world? I think it could have such a huge impact on the health of individuals and on the health of our community.
The other thing that often defines the month of November in Christian churches is the annual stewardship campaign, where we ask members to consider what they might give to the church in the year to come. As I have been thinking about both of these November events, I began to realize that they are really quite naturally tied together. Stewardship, the act of properly caring for the resources that God has given to us, is really all about gratitude. We take good care of our money, our church, our people, our community, and our earth, all as a way to say thank you to God for the gifts that each of these things are in our life.
So, this November, I encourage you to practice gratitude. Make a list (everyday if you can) of all the things for which you are grateful in your life. Keep that list where you can see it. Share your list with those around you. Add or increase a time of saying thank you to God in your daily prayer life. And then, think about how you can express that gratitude in acts of stewardship. Asking yourself, “How can I show gratitude by taking better care of the gifts that you have been given to me?” And may your month be filled with healthfulness, energy, joy, compassion, forgiveness, deep connections with others, and all the wonderful gifts that God wants to give you.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Todd
