In the Cadillac game, theBlue Devils fell behind early against their Big North foeand couldnt make up the lostground in a 57-47 defeat.Gaylord trailed 19-11 afterone quarter and 35-23 at thehalf.

We didnt put forth a goodeffort on the defensive end inthe first half, said Hamilla. We put them on the line way too much. They shot 17 freethrows in the first half. They

ended up scoring 10 or morepoints on the line and that was the difference in thegame.

The Blue Devils gave aninspired effort in the secondhalf and played the host

Vikings on even terms. The second half we came

out with more intensity ondefense, Hamilla said. Ourdefense got us back in thegame. We had cut the lead tofour and had possession of the ball with a little over twominutes to go in the game,

but we had a turnover andthey went down and scored. We had to foul at the end

and they made their freethrows, he added. I amproud of their effort in thesecond half.

    Senior Peter Lawton was

between the pipes forGaylord and did a whale of a job keeping his team in posi-tion to strike and win late inthe third period. He stopped17 of 20 shots. Merriam, whohad a brilliant campaign forPetoskey, also made severalstellar stops to keep her teamin contention to the very end.She turned away 26 of 30shots from the Blue Devils.

The Northmen finished with a 12-12-1 record.

For Cheboygan, it was thesmooth-striding Swiderek showing up big once again ina clutch situation.

New House or an Old One? Consider the pros and cons to eachCompliments of Ed Wohlfiel

As you embark on your ventureto buy a home, one of the first deci-sions to make is whether to buy new or purchase an existing home. Each choice has its advantages, and there is no single answer that works for everyone.

You may be drawn to the shiny new, energy-efficient appliances, the great room, and the beautiful

master suite offered in a new home. But you may also like thecharm, the canopy of trees thatdrape over the sleepy neighbor-hood streets, and the increasing value of an existing home you'vebeen eying.

Here are some things you'll want to ponder as you decide which route to take.

Existing homesExisting homes offer many con-

    siderations for potential homebuy-ers, including:

The neighborhood. Many peo-ple are drawn to developed neigh-borhoods for the sense of commu-nity that has been established. Themature landscaping and devel-oped trees are often a considering factor.

    Maintenance and

repair. If you're considering anexisting home, be sure you have agood handle on the working statusof all major systems. Hire a profes-sional home inspector to check outthe house. As appliances and sys-tems age they naturally requirerepair and replacement, some-thing which may be reflected in apurchase price.

Home improvement. If youenjoy small repairs and homeimprovement projects around thehouse, then an existing home would be your cup of tea.

Existing features. When youbuy an existing home, you typical-ly don't have to worry about buy-ing the extras, such as blinds forthe window, a security system, or alandscaped back yard.

Land. In most metro centers, new homes may have less landthan newer properties. Why?Because of changes in land-usepatterns.

Location. Existing homes areoften found in older, more conven-ient metro core areas rather thanoutlying suburbs.

The opportunity to remodel. Insome cases buyers may prefer anolder home in a particular location which can be modernized orexpanded. In effect, use the exist-ing home as a base to build aunique property.

Price. In general terms, existing homes tend to be less expensivethan new properties. As well, exist-ing homes are likely to come com-plete with items which may repre-sent new home extrasblinds, landscaping, built-ins, etc.

Track record. When you pur-chase an existing home, you know how much the property has appre-

ciated over the years -- in effect, you have an index of sorts whichmeasures the community's mar-ketplace appeal. At the same time, like stocks and bonds, you know that past results do not guaranteefuture marketplace performance.
