One of my unexpected surprises as a member of Rotary came during a l a r g e c h a m b e r o f commerce meeting held at the Trade Center in New Orleans.A young lady approached me and said “I want to

thank you.” I asked “Why? Have we met?” She responded by saying she saw my Rotary pin that I was wearing and that she gave thanks to every Rotarian she saw.She went on to tell me how she had been named a Rotary Scholar and earned a master’s degree in international banking at Oxford University, following undergraduate work in accounting. Upon returning from Oxford, she was hired at the largest bank in New Orleans, and after a few short years, she was named vice president for that bank’s investments in Latin America. She specialized in bank loans to young people to financially assist in their development.I’m sure we all have some personal stories to tell about those being helped by Rotary. My own club has a constant flow of young children who we have helped receive both minor and major medical operations.I share the above story since it came as a complete surprise for something for which I had no personal involvement. Our only link was that Rotary pin.

District Grants allowed for Low Cost Shelters - PRIP Kalyan Banerjee

A reason to wear your Rotary pin –Ron Nethercutt

At the April 2014 meeting of the Trustees, a decision has been taken to allow the construction of LOW COST SHELTERS using DISTRICT GRANTS.Trustees eliminated the following funding restrictions from district grants:lRotary Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract or

InteractlConstructionlTravel for staff of cooperating organizationlActivities primarily implemented by an

organization other than RotaryPlease note that removing the restriction on construction from the grants criteria will allow low-cost shelters to be an eligible activity within district grants, by Rotary Clubs & Districts. They therefore can start constructing low cost shelters using district Grants. For clubs in India / South Asia, this means that districts abroad, can send you their district funds for the construction of low cost shelters. Many districts abroad have such funds available. They will be happy to help by sending your funds, after you establish the necessary contacts. The cost of the shelter is not restricted. Please note the land/ plot for the shelters must be donated, gifted, received from a Trust etc. It can be purchased if extra money / donor is available, but NOT from District Funds.Let us start. Let us get shelters going again. A home is where the Family begins. A home brings hope. It gives self respect & it brings security
