This upcoming week we have several important and exciting events sched-
uled. On Monday we have our first PTO meeting of the year at 7:00PM in the
FBMS library. Part of the PTO meeting always includes a presentation re-
garding an initiative taking place here at FBMS. At this first meeting, we will
be providing an overview of some our goals and points of emphasis for the
upcoming year. Other topics to be discussed throughout the year include
technology / ASPEN, Title I math supports, Youth Risk Health Survey, RTI
(Response to Intervention), Writing Across the Curriculum & KEYS to Com-
prehension, S.T.E.A.M. , Internet Safety and other topics about which parents
express an interest to discuss. (cont. on page 2)

Leadership Message (cont. from page 1)
Please try to get involved as much as you can with the PTO, as the strong connection between home and school has made a
significant positive impact on our school culture. Wednesday, September 14 we have our annual Back to School Night. All
parents and guardians are invited to experience your son or daughter’s schedule first-hand. The evening begins in the audi-
torium at 5:30 PM with a presentation by FBMS Leadership and commences formally at 6:00 PM in homerooms. Parents
then follow their son or daughter’s Day 1, semester 1 schedule.
We have several clubs that are set to begin at FBMS over the next few weeks. This past Wednesday, information was deliv-
ered to students regarding our league champion FBMS Cross-Country Team at a meeting which was attended by nearly 100
student. There will be a brief meeting for any student interested in participating in the FBMS tennis club, September 14
immediately following school. The Tennis Club takes place on Thursdays (September 22 and 29 and October 6 and 20) and
is open to all students of all ability levels. This club is instructed by the Marshfield High School Varsity Tennis Coach, certi-
fied members of the tennis club and members of the varsity girls tennis team. Over the coming days, students and families
will receive information regarding our award winning FBMS Drama Club, Furnace Brook Builders Club (which is sponsored
by Kiwanis and sets out to provide community service for those in need), Student Council, Literary Magazine, Yearbook,
after school enrichment and FBMS Jazz Band. These clubs are a fantastic opportunity for your son or daughter to get in-
volved in activities at FBMS.
We are very excited for this coming Friday’s I am Malala Day, which will celebrate our inter-disciplinary and peace building
approach to our One Book, One School initiative. The day will include a group picture of all students and staff wearing their
I Am… t-shirts (which they will receive on Thursday), a series of inter-disciplinary academic problem-based learning oppor-
tunities surrounding the book, and two presentations by Razia Jan from Razia’s Ray of Hope. Razia, who owns a tailoring
business in Duxbury, motivated the Duxbury community to send blankets to rescue workers at ground zero after the 9/11
attacks. She also handmade a quilt that currently hangs in the pentagon as a tribute to those who lost their lives on that
tragic day. She founded Razia’s Ray of Hope in order to provide free education for the girls of Afghanistan in 2002, and has
since helped more than 500 girls realize the dream of an education. Her organization was founded on the belief that
“education is key to positive, peaceful change for current and future generations” (https://
raziasrayofhope.org/). Supporting Razia’s Ray of Hope will be a main focus of many of our fundraising efforts this year. We
are very excited for the day and extremely thankful to Mrs. Jan for her generosity with this endeavor. A big thank you also
goes out to our Literacy Committee and to everyone who helped prepare this day to be great for the students.
In addition to our Weekly Bulletin, Twitter account
(@FBMSPPAL), Facebook page and Leadership Web
Page, we also post daily announcements. These an-
nouncements can be found on the FBMS page. It is
always one of our main goals to keep you informed of
everything that is happening at FBMS. We will also be
available from time-to-time to have open discussion
about any subject affecting the students at our Leader-
ship Coffees, which will occur periodically throughout
the year. Our next leadership coffee is this Monday,
September 12 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM (immediately
preceding the PTO meeting). All are welcome to at-
tend. To the right are some spirited sixth graders who participated in our Cluster Pride Day today. Have a fantastic week-
end.

Growth Mindset and Learning
FBMS teachers and staff recently met for our September Faculty Meeting and discussed the value of Growth Mindset in their
classrooms. The concept of a growth mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck. Dweck’ focuses on the distinction
between “fixed” and “growth” mindsets. According to Dweck, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their
intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing
them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort.” Dweck’s research suggests that students who have
adopted a fixed mindset—the belief that they are either “smart” or “dumb” and there is no way to change this, for example—may
learn less than they could or learn at a slower rate, while also shying away from challenges (since poor performance might either
confirm they can’t learn, if they believe they are “dumb,” or indicate that they are less intelligent than they think, if they believe
they are “smart”). Dweck’s findings also suggest that when students with fixed mindsets fail at something, as they inevitably will,
they tend to tell themselves they can’t or won’t be able to do it (“I just can’t learn Algebra”), or they make excuses to rationalize
the failure (“I would have passed the test if I had had more time to study”).
Alternatively, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard
work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great
accomplishment,” writes Dweck. Students who embrace growth mindsets—the belief that they can learn more or become smart-
er if they work hard and persevere—may learn more, learn it more quickly, and view challenges and failures as opportunities to
improve their learning and skills.
FBMS teachers shared examples of stressing positive language to promote students’ growth mindset and instill perseverance
among students and a belief that with hard work, success will be realized. Ask your students if they have discussed growth mind-
set in class and see what they think about it.
