Page 1 WEEKLY BULLETIN — 22 April 2016 From the Headmaster On Saturday evening senior cadets, parents, staff, Old Reigatians and guests of the CCF had a very enjoyable evening at the CCF Annual Mess Dinner where Admiral Stirling was our honoured guest. Lord Stirling shared with us insights from his fascinating and varied career. The Corps of Drums played their best performance yet with a variety of military music and James Bond arranged by Sgt Nick Ingram. The RGS Upper School mathematicians have again excelled in the UK Maths Trust’s Challenges. We had 13 pupils from our the Third, Furth and Fifth Forms qualify from last term’s Intermediate Maths Challenge through to the next round of challenges. Amongst them 11 students took the Kangaroo papers, with Christopher Meredith, Eleanor Medcalf and Andrew Pardoe achieving Merit awards. Two students qualified for the prestigious Maths Olympiad, where Aaron Gilchrist achieved a Merit award, and Connie Bambridge-Sutton was one of only 100 pupils nationally to be awarded a Medal. Congratulations to all of them. Congratulations to all students who sat ABRSM, Trinity and other public music examinations at the end of the Spring term achieving a 100% pass rate—many with a Merit or Distinction, which is no mean feat. A special mention must go to the ten successful Grade 8 candidates: Hugh Blayney, Estuardo Del Angel; Nicholas Johnson, Jack Kelly, Alix Longwell (x2), Oliver Massey, Gaia Moroni, Tom Schlaefli, Will Tuckwell and Madeleine Withers. For the full list of results please see page three. During the Easter holidays a number of trips took place: The CCF spent some time learnt mountain rescue skills, surfing and trying out the high ropes. Senior netballers travelled to Barcelona on to take part in a five day tour which consisted of several training sessions delivered by top level coaches including two Superleague players, as well as sight-seeing, visiting a theme park and a Masterclass Tournament held by Edwin Doran. The team played exceptionally well throughout the competition, winning all eight of their matches and the tournament in style, beating schools including South Wiltshire Grammar and Weston College. Well done to all girls to took part. A group of Fourth Form Spanish students were re-united with their exchange partners in A Coruña. They were greeted at the airport by all of the exchange partners and welcomed with a loud HOLA! Students had a busy itinerary including a visit to a Churrería, La Torre de Hércules, Monte San Pedro, Santiago de Compostela and much more. They spent the weekend with their host families and played a game of football: Spain v England. On the last day, RGS attended lessons in el Colegio Marista before having lunch in the school canteen. Students were sad to say goodbye to each other, but many are already making plans to go back and visit. This week the Spanish play Primera Cita, run by the theatre company Onatti, was enjoyed by students in the First to Fourth Forms. It was an hilarious comedy that focused on two love-struck teenagers organising their first ever date. The play involved lots of audience participation (in Spanish!) and even a few RGS appearances on stage. In the English Chess Federation U13 Schools Championships RGS finished in second place and are therefore national runners-up! RGS scored 10.5/16 with our only loss coming against runaway champions KCS Wimbledon. RGS scores were: Bd1 Alex Golding 4.0/4; Bd2 Harry Armstrong 2.5/4; Bd3 Annalise Hansen 3.0/4; and Bd4 Bernadette Cheng-Whitehead 1.0/4—with every one of those points needed to achieve second place. Ernest Tan played some good games in the reserves section and was a great backup to the team. This is RGS’ best national chess result for many years—thank you to all who made it possible. Wednesday afternoon saw the start of the new House Year with Senior House Swimming. Students from the Fourth Form and above took part and there was a great atmosphere with plenty of cheering and support. As well as the traditional individual and relay races the Fifth and Sixth Forms took part in events including sculling, diving and a woggle race! Congratulations to all who took part—a fantastic start to the year. Robinson 15.81; Senior Girls Breaststroke – Joanna Amey 18.87; Fourth Form Girls Butterfly – Ashleigh Smith 14.31; Senior Girls Front Crawl – Isabel Wood 13.56; Boys Diving Record – Greg Beazley 11.87m; and Girls Diving Record – Georgina Robinson 13.28m.

The overall House positions are currently: Fourth Form: 1st Hodgson; 2nd Williamson; 3rd = Bird/Cranston

Fifth & Sixth Forms: 1st Williamson; 2nd Hodgson; 3rd Cranston; 4th Bird Sport news Tom Allen played for Surrey U15 Rugby in their victory over Middlesex and has also been selected for the

Harlequins U15 squad for the Regional Academies 12-a-side tournament at Harrow School. Max Coyle played for England U17 Rugby in their 19-17 win over France with Max scoring one of the tries. Lili Ferguson and Catriona Lynn, who both play for the Beecholme Belles Banstead FC U18s, have had another

very successful season. The team are 2016 Surrey League champions and recently won the Surrey Challenge Cup 5-1.

Jemma Freestone has had a fantastic fourth season at Chelsea FC with one loss in twenty-eight games. Jemma has been offered a contract for the 2016-2017 season. Well done.

Ellie Green played for the London and South East U15 Rugby divisional side in their last graded game with Ellie kicking three out of four goals.

Joe Gregson, Marcus Sotiriou and Lucas Overtoom played for Surrey U17 Rugby in their 26-19 victory over Middlesex with Lucas and Marcus both scoring.

Stephanie Weber and Taylor Weber are U16 National Club Champions who won all four of their matches, at Lee Valley with Taylor scoring a goal en route. This is the girls’ fourth National Championship with Surbiton and they have won at U12, U14 (twice) and now at U16.

RGS boys have recently enjoyed success with Reigate Priory Hockey Club Boys U14 side. They reached the semi-finals of the Mercian League Regional U14 competition, covering much of the south-east of England, after being promoted to regional league and finishing second in that league. Well done to Daniel Wigfield in goal, Josh Harvey, Ollie Beresford, Patrick Florida-James, Ed MacTavish, Aran Patel and Harvey Nutt. Benjamin Turrington was out injured after breaking his hand in the quarter-final. The RGS boys combined well with boys from a number of other local schools to form a cohesive and spirited squad, with some really promising individual talent.

Student News Chloe Bader won the Reigate Heath Golf Club annual Easter competition; Charlotte Bader was the

runner up. Huge congratulations to Leah Beglan, Tally Goss, James Grimstone, Hannah Griffin and Krishne

Thevarajah on their fantastic performances at The Harlequin Redhill in the annual Star for a Night competition sponsored by Reigate & Banstead council. Amongst all the local students performing in the showcase, three of our RGS Drama students secured dance and theatre scholarships. Leah was awarded a dance scholarship for her original choreographic skills and commitment. Hannah was awarded the drama scholarship for her exceptional discipline and the team created an award for James in response to his superb commitment to the creative process during the rehearsals.

Kathryn Boyd, Izzy Cooper and Izzy van der Spuy, took part in the In2Hockey Surrey Cup in Guildford with Izzy v.d.S and Kathryn playing for the Epsom Hockey Club A team and Izzy C playing for the Surbiton B team. The teams did brilliantly winning their groups and eventually going on to take part in the finals, where they played each other for the bronze medal. The result was a draw and both teams went through to the regional event. At the regionals Clara Alston, Kathryn Boyd and Izzy van der Spuy played brilliantly and although they didn't quite make it to the Cup playoffs they qualified for the Plate playoffs, which they won.

Will Brann was selected for Surrey U13 rugby development squad—just rewards after working so hard. Alex Golding is now officially the English Youth Grand Prix U13 National Chess Champion (link) and has

qualified for the European Youth and the World Cadets/Youth Chess Championships. Hannah Griffin auditioned for Youth Musical Theatre and has been offered a place in one of their productions! Charles Lee has been awarded a violin scholarship with the Redhill Sinfonia Orchestra. This is a new

scholarship programme for suitably qualified school-age string players. Charles has only been playing with the Sinfonia since September so is really pleased to have been awarded.

Emma Starbuck is a member of the Glow Theatre Group, based in Caterham. The group has for the last five years won the Southern Counties Drama Festival youth category, and with this year's performance has now twice won the event outright across both adult and youth categories. Their play for this year The Edelweiss Pirates was presented at the Eastern England finals over the weekend and won that also, so is now going forward to the All England final in June.

School continues to be as busy as ever and I am more and more impressed each day with the way all members of the community are looking after each other. Do please let me or a member of the pastoral team know if there is anything we can help you with and, as ever, if there are any student successes you wish to share please email me via [email protected]—it is super to hear about the students’ successes in and out of school. With my Best Wishes Shaun Fenton, Headmaster
