Page 1 WEEKLY BULLETIN — 10 June 2016 From the Headmaster I very much hope that everyone has had a restful half term break. It is good to see Lower School students and staff back in school all working hard towards the end of year exams next week. I am sure students are well prepared—remember staff are here to help so do ask. I recommend students get plenty of sleep, eat well and exercise some, all of which will help them to cope. All too soon we will be in the final run towards the end of term and there are countless fun and exciting events coming up. One such event is the Evening with the Swing Band on Friday 24 June at 7.30pm in the Gardens of One Chart Lane. The evening will feature music from Glenn Miller to Billy Joel performed by the ever popular RGS Swing Band and this year it will also include music from student-led bands. Please bring a picnic, pray for sunshine and come and enjoy an evening of jazz music. Tickets (£5; concessions £3) are available from the RGS Box Office via this link. (NB: this is an alternation from the dated published in the calendar). During half term, Lower School pupils (pictured above) took part in the language module at Château du Broutel in Baie de Somme, France. A packed four days during which everyone enjoyed the visits and activities. Highlights were making croissants following baker Bruno’s instructions, making mayonnaise under the direction of the chateau’s chef, visiting the sweet factory, games on Berck beach and of course the goat farm and learning how goat’s cheese is made. Clearly much of this trip revolves around food and students interacted in French gaining confidence with the language and making progress with their speaking and listening skills. Every day there are developments on site as The Peter Harrison Foundation Centre begins to take shape. Watch our webcam showing the latest snapshot image of progress on the building which will house the new Sixth Form Centre and Library. New images are taken every 15 minutes between 9.00am-5.00pm Monday-Friday so save this link to your browser so that you can watch progress at any time. Student News Leilah de Meza (pictured below) attended the Premiere of Alice Through The Looking Glass in which she plays the part of the Young Red Queen—Princess Iracebeth—the younger version of Helena Bonham Carter. Seven RGS students have been successful in their auditions and one is a reserve for the Duet Philharmonic Orchestra representing the very highest standards of musicianship. The orchestra auditions both British nationals and overseas students who are studying full-time in the UK. Performing only once every two years, musicians tackle some of the most difficult repertoire composed for symphony orchestras. Students attend a residential music course culminating in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall next April alongside Sheku Kanneh- Mason, BBC Young Musician 2016 and all-round superstar! Many congratulations to Anna Anderson, Juliet Anderson, Freya Biggs, Bertie Coomber, Sophia Herbert, Yasmin Herbert, Nick Ingram and Eleanor Medcalf. Congratulations to Harry Armstrong, Alex Golding and Annalise Hansen who recently played for the South East of England U14 National Chess Junior Squad in an international against Wales. As part of a squad of 12 players they helped England to a comprehensive victory over Wales. Machayla Dewdney competed in the second part of the Phoenix Tri Aquathlon Series securing third place in the Tristar 3 girls’ category (13-14 years old). Ellie Green has been selected for the Rugby National U15 Talent Development Group following on from her performances in the South East Junior Academy games at both 15 a-side and 7 a-side.

Sport News Congratulations to the Girls’ U14 and U13 Tennis teams who won all of their

matches in the group stages of the Surrey Tennis League. The U14s won against St Catherine’s, Caterham, Woldingham and Croydon High whilst the U13s battled it out against Guildford High, Notre Dame Cobham, Sutton High and St Teresa’s. We wait to hear who we play in the semi-finals at St George’s on 24 June. Well done to the U14 team of Sofia Gibbon, Grace Greaves, Amelia Robley Dixon, Hattie Dadswell, Lucy Hangartner and Hannah Cross; and to the U13 team of Freya Biggs, Simone Kellard, Tabby Green, Katty Bliss, Mia Jojic, Bernie Cheng-Whitehead and Zoe Mitchell.

Three RGS Athletics teams—the Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Inter Girls—all qualified for the regional round of the Track and Field Cup, a national competition in which around 900 teams in each age range compete. The Junior Girls are currently placed fourth nationally and are looking forward to their A Regional Final in London on Tuesday 21 June. The other two teams are in the B Regional Finals at Hillingdon on Wednesday 22 June.

Congratulations to Lily Grant and Joe Jenner who both medalled at the Surrey County Athletics Combined Events Championships last week. Lily achieved silver and has been selected to represent the county at the regionals. Joe achieved bronze and is currently ranked 14th in the UK for U15 boys’ pentathlon. He has been selected to represent Surrey Schools at the South East Combined Events Championships later this month in a team of four athletes competing against teams from six other counties.

From Mr Rushby, Assistant Head Bags – a reminder to students

The recent sudden downpours this week has caused some students’ bags to become extremely wet and there was damage to some students’ books at a critical time of revision. Please could all students be reminded of the following very simple guidelines, which are all to do with treating their own and others’ property with care and respect: Use the bag racks or lockers to store your property. The school has vast

numbers of covered bag racks all around the site and many of them are not fully used. Please do not leave bags on the ground, especially near a bag rack that is full.

Be careful not to damage others’ bags when storing or retrieving your own.

For example, be careful not to pull other bags off the bag racks when removing yours. Again, this is less likely to happen if racks are not over-filled. We do have enough capacity for all students’ bags to be stored safely and protected from the rain, but sometimes, you have to walk a little further to find some space.

During the summer holiday we will relocate some of the less-used bag racks so that there is more capacity in the busiest areas such as around the PMH.

Look after your bags, and respect everyone else’s bags. Thank you all very much for your help and co-operation.

RGS Cantata Choir Come & Sing

Event

Saturday 11 June 2016

2.00pm – St Mary’s Church 5.30pm – Informal concert

6.30pm – Refreshments at St Mary’s Church Centre

You are warmly invited to join the RGS Cantata Choir for a choral Come and Sing day at St Mary’s Church,

Reigate on Saturday 11 June 2016. No experience required. Suitable for anyone who

would like to enjoy some choral singing in a relaxed, friendly environment. The music will be a selection of movements from Haydn’s The Creation and The Armed

Man by Karl Jenkins. We’ll meet and rehearse for a few hours then give a short performance to an audience of

family and friends. The day will finish with refreshments at a social gathering at St Mary’s Church Centre.

RGS Cantata is a friendly choir, open to the RGS

community—parents, relatives, friends, RGS and RSM staff, current and former pupils of the school.

In March 2017, the RGS Cantata Choir will join with all school choirs to sing Fauré’s Requiem

with full orchestra and soloists at the prestigious venue, St John’s Smith Square in London—an

opportunity not to be missed! We are actively recruiting new members and would love

for you to join us. For more information about the Come and Sing event, or about joining the choir, please contact Tali Glynne-Jones, Head of Choral Music, via

[email protected]

RGS Sports Day: Friday 1 July 2016 The Annual House Sports Day is on Friday 1 July at Hartswood, beginning at 11.00am and running through to the end of the school day. As in previous years, this is a wonderful event where all students in the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Lower Sixth Forms represent their houses in track and field events. There is also the Senior Tug of War at the end of the day. We would like all students to be fully involved in Sports Day and there will be lots of activities to keep them busy when they are not on the track or field. There will also be refreshments—and support from parents and families is really welcomed. Further details about the precise timings will be supplied soon. In the meantime, students are reminded that they will need to wear house t-shirts for Sports Day. These may be purchased from the Heads of House; sleeved t-shirts (not vest tops, slogans etc.) are permissible in the correct house colour. First, Second and Third Form House Cricket, Tennis and Rounders: Saturday 2 July 2016 Another date for your diaries: this will take place at Hartswood on the morning of Saturday 2 July with matches for the First and Second Forms taking place from 9.15-11.15am; and for the Third Form from 11.30am-1.15pm. Further details will be sent nearer the time.

First to Fourth Form Celebrations and

Prize Giving We will shortly be celebrating Prize Giving for students in the First to Fourth Forms. Students who are to receive a prize will be notified separately, and it would be super to see as many of you as possible there to help celebrate the achievements of each year group. All events will be in the PMH from 8.40am-9.40am on these dates: First Form: Friday 24 June Second Form: Friday 1 July Third Form: Tuesday 28 June Fourth Form: Wednesday 29

June The majority of prizes will be awarded at the individual year group assemblies. However, School Colours and a few other prizes will be saved for the whole school end of year assembly on Tuesday 5 July.

Promotion Code) and to the rest of the school community on Thursday 9 June.
