THE THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FAMILY NOTES, XXX Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 24, 2021
Dear friends, peace!
WHO?
A request. Tell me about Jesus. Really, what’s He like? And as you think, maybe you are asking for
my thoughts as well. Ok, for quite a while a line in a hymn we sing has shocked me into seeing into what
lengths Jesus went for us. “Your gift of love they crucified, they laughed and scorned Him as He died;
the humble King they named a fraud, and sacrificed the Lamb of God.” To the Romans as to the Jews
He certainly didn’t fit their idea of king. Certainly His closest friends would not have called Him a fraud,
but they certainly “didn’t get it” also. Three times Jesus told the apostles that “the Son of Man will be
handed over to the Gentiles (the Romans) who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him and put him to
death,” yet two of His closest friends still thought He was founding an earthly kingdom and asked for top
posts in His government! (See Mark10:35-40). I know better and so do you – from Scripture.
SCRIPTURE
We believe in prophecy. We believe that God revealed beforehand in the Old Testament the truth
about the Messiah. Through Isaiah God explained that His Servant, His Son, would suffer, that He would
be “so marred in his appearance”, so abused that “people would hide their faces”; would turn away from
Him; He’d be “spurned and held in no esteem.” Isaiah clearly taught that the Christ would be a
“Suffering Servant”; that He would be “pierced for our offences, crushed for our sins” because “the Lord
laid upon him the guilt of us all.” Led “like a lamb to the slaughter,” Christ, the Lamb of God, “would take
away the sins of many and win pardon for their offences.” (See Isaiah 52:13-53:12.) So. Sacred
Scripture reveals that Jesus, Christ crucified, saves by His suffering and death.
So does Sacred Tradition. Let’s look at God’s revelation through the Sacred Liturgy.
SACRED TRADITION
In the First Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation the Church prays, “We@were lost”, we “could not
approach God.” But God “loved us with the greatest love” and His Son, “who alone is just, handed
himself over to death, and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of the Cross@” And
“knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his Blood to be shed on the Cross,
he took the chalice...handed it to his disciples, and said, ‘this is the Chalice of My Blood, the Blood of the
new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.’”
Thus did the Messiah Jesus fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy and His own teaching that He would “give His life as
a ransom for the many..” (See Mark 10:45). Jesus prefaced the consecration of the Chalice with the
consecration of the bread as His Body. So the elementary truth is this: Jesus, Body, Blood, Soul and
Divinity, truly present in the Eucharist, in an unbloody manner, as the Eternal High Priest (See Hebrews
4:14-16 and 7:24-25.) offers Himself eternally to the Father for us and makes that Sacrifice present to us
and for us in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Then, of course, marvelously, He nourishes us with His true
Presence in Holy Communion.
HABIT
The Irish have a saying concerning ingratitude, “Eaten bread is soon forgotten.” Not so for a faithful
Catholic! If we keep eating the Bread we’ll never forget. Indeed this sacrament causes us to grow
spiritually into Christ but only if we eat His Bread habitually. “Do this,” He said. And we do. Every
Sunday! And this good habit leads us to experience the answer to my earlier question. Jesus is, “Christ
crucified, the power of God and the wisdom of God,” (I Corinthians 1:23-24.) Alleluia!
God bless. JFH

The month of October is dedicated to the
Holy Rosary. “Our Lady of the Rosary” feast
day is celebrated on October 7th.
The Rosary is one of the most recited
Catholic prayers. We pray the Rosary to
implore our Mother Mary for her intercession
with her Son. She is always heard.
During this month of October let us renew our devotion to
Our Lady of the Rosary and ask Mary to intercede for us and
ask God to bring an end to the corona pandemic. Booklets
and flyers on the Rosary and other spiritual materials are
available after Mass or at the rectory.
