    Selecting keyword

When you're first starting to formulate yourresearch question, it can be useful to

    brainstorm keywords that are synonymous

with or related to the major concepts of your

topic, as well as narrower and broader terms.

Try to create a hierarchy of concepts for your

research topic - it will give you more flexibilitywhen searching different types of databases,

    catalogs, etc.

    Selecting keyword

The official words used by catalogs and manyindexes to identify all of the books or articles dealing

with a particular topic are called subject headings.

Subject headings can be one word, two or morewords, a phrase, a city, a country, a person, etc.

    Brainstorming for Search Terms

    Examples of subject headings are:

    Library Subject Headings:

Used as the "official vocabulary" of the Libraries catalog as wellas many other library catalogs.

    Science Subject Headings:

Used to describe the content of documents in the Library at AIUas well as in catalogs of other medical and health scienceslibraries.

Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms:This controlled vocabulary is used by American Psychological

Association indexers to describe the content of documents inthe database. These subject headings are sometimes calledindex terms or descriptors. The library has copies of the printedvolume and the thesaurus is also available online,

    searchable from within the database.7

    Boolean Searching

    What is Boolean operators?

(named for George Boole, 1815-1864, a mathematician) -

combining terms such as AND, OR, and NOT used in building a

    Boolean Searching

    Boolean Operator or Keywords

Boolean searching allows you to group words

together in an electronic database orenvironment such as the World Wide Web to

receive a number of different types of results.

Depending how you group these word, you

    will receive different results.

Boolean Searching Boolean operators are words that connect a

search that may add or subtract a concept to

    your search.

Boolean searching is the most common and

    basic search strategy.

It allows you to expand (return more information

or matches) a search by using OR or limit (return

less information) a search by using the word

    AND.

Most of the search engines on the World Wide

Web allow you to use some form of boolean

    searching.

    Boolean Searching

    For example:

By using an AND between words you limit

    the search.

By placing an OR between words itexpands the search.

When you use OR you receive more

information because the search engine is

looking for two words rather than just oneword.

    Boolean Searching

BooleanAnd queries Boolean searching allows you to group words

together in different combinations to produce avariety of results.

The AND queries are probably the most usedand many search engines defaults to(meaning it automatically using this searchingtool) that as a search strategy. It is the

simplest to understand. The query 'beach and California' will find the

connection of all the documents containing thewords 'beach', and 'California'

    Boolean Searching

Boolean - 'Not' queriesAnother type of boolean searching tool is the

'not' operator which allows you to exclude

    words from the search.

If a document has a word that you would like

to search but that document also contains

another word that you do not want to

retrieve, then it will exclude that documentfrom you search query results.
