“More Than Words” Week 3: Communication Breakdown

This weekend is the third week of our Spring message series, “More Than Words.” In this series we are looking at the power of our words. This is important because often we dismiss or diminish the power of words. We have all heard the old saying, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”

However, if we are honest, we have all been hurt by the words of others, and if we are even more honest, we know that we have hurt people by the things that we have said. Our words have power because we are made in the image and likeness of God. In the Book of Genesis we hear that God spoke the universe into existence. God said… and it happened. In St. John’s Gospel the incarnation of Jesus is described as “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Of course our words do not have the power that God’s words do because we are only human and God is divine, but as disciples of Jesus we are called to make our words like his – words of healing, words of forgiveness, words of love. Two weeks ago we looked at some of the sins of the tongue. Those sins come from our heart. For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. We looked at how our words reveal our heart and reveal what we have to work on in our heart. Last week we looked at finding words in Scripture to bring clarity and direction to our life. We don’t want to let the words of others define our direction. We want to let the word of God set the direction to our lives. And so we asked everyone to begin looking for a verse or story of Scripture to claim as your own. This week we are going to look at communication breakdowns. There are some people we love or have to work with and we can never seem to get over the confusion in communication. This week we are going to look at the Tower of Babel to see why communication breakdowns occur, and then look at the Pentecost account from the Acts of the Apostles for how we can avoid communication breakdowns.

What we want you to know this week: Confusion in our words and speaking comes from sin. Confusion leads to frustration and the breaking down of our relationships. Often this comes from focusing more on our own needs, and not on the person we want to communicate with. Clarity and clear communication are a mark of the Holy Spirit. So how do you get on the same page or cut through that confusion? By purifying our hearts, and inviting the Holy Spirit into our hearts.

What we want you to do this week: Identify a communication breakdown in your life – maybe with

one of your parents, or one of your children, maybe it is with a co-worker or your boss, maybe it is with your spouse – and invite the Holy Spirit into that relationship to purify your heart and fill it with his light.

MORE THAN WORDS

Week Three – May 30 & 31: Pentecost “Communication Breakdown” Scripture: Acts 2:1-11 We all know how frustrating it can be to be misunderstood and how a relationship can go south because of a spirit of confusion and misunderstanding. Maybe you find yourself in that situation right now. You can’t seem to get on the same page and you are struggling to find the words to communicate well and struggling to receive the words of some other people in your life. The Gift of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrate in a special way today, the Solemnity of Pentecost, offers us some useful aids in overcoming the communication breakdowns in our lives.

WAYS FAMILIES CAN COPE DURING STAY-AT-HOME ORDERS When the weather starts to warm up as winter comes to a close and spring starts to blossom, a natural tendency of mine (and probably many others too) is to go outside. There is something refreshing about the outdoors and peaceful being in the sun. Perhaps, the warmth and light of the sun reminds my soul of The Son, Jesus, the light of the world. The difficulty living in the spring of 2020 is that we are under restrictions and quarantines. This means less times outdoors and more time indoors. Which, although necessary especially for those that are high risk, isn’t necessarily healthy. So what do we do? Here are some ways that families can cope with the current pandemic:

1. Try to get at least 10-15 minutes of sunlight every day. This is not always possible because of rain. And, I am not saying to put yourself at risk. If there is a place in your yard where you can be in the sun and you are not putting yourself at risk, then try to get outside. The sun gives us vitamin D which helps us absorb other nutrients more efficiently and may protect us, at least somewhat, from viruses and bacteria. Plus, mentally, it is good to get outside.

2. Exercise and Stretching. Having a good exercise program can make the rest of your day more

proficient. It also helps you sleep better and improves your overall health. Exercise has been shown

to improve mood also, which can lead to stronger relationships, which is really important in

strengthening family life and improving morale. Also, stretching has been shown to relax the body

and mind which reduces stress. It also improves flexibility which has been shown to reduce

inflammation leading to better overall health. Stretching before bed is a good way to unwind and

prepare the body for good, restful sleep. There are many exercise and flexibility programs to follow

for free on YouTube right now. Low impact, high intensity interval training workouts can usually

be done between 10-15 minutes per day and are effective at helping the body burn calories all day

long, not just when exercising. But, check with your doctor first before starting any exercise

program.

3. Take it outside. Exercise can be done outside where we get the health benefits of exercising and the

sun all in one. When doing this, we still need to be smart about social distancing, wearing masks

and preventing the spread of the virus. Biking, hiking, walking, jogging or simple calisthenics are

ways to improve our health outdoors. Gardening and yard work are also very beneficial.

The bottom line is to enjoy the weather we now have. For the next several months planning safe, outdoor time can benefit not only your physical health, but your mental health as well.

Good Counsel Homes was originally founded to address the needs of homeless, pregnant women in New York in 1985. Four homes are currently operational in the New York Metropolitan Area and in South Jersey. Since formation, Good Counsel has had 1,219 babies born to resident moms, 15 just this year so far. Our mothers can stay a year or longer after their baby is born. While in residence mothers have earned their GEDs, and graduated from Nursing School, Culinary School, Real Estate School, and Clinical Nursing Programs. Other Moms have attended community and county colleges, and other work related programs while working part time or full time jobs. Staffed 24/7, Good Counsel provides a family like atmosphere with all residents sharing the responsibilities of taking care of the home. Our mothers participate in a Life Skills Program with weekly classes on nutrition, post/pre-natal education, general parenting, chastity, spirituality, finances, job preparedness, and health and computer skills. The goal of all Good Counsel Homes is to help find the residents full time employment, safe and secure housing and to become financially and physically independent while becoming contributing members of society. If you are interested in contributing to our mission in Pro-life ministry and breaking the cycle of homelessness , please consider becoming a monthly donor by calling 201.795.0637, visit our website www.goodcounselhomes.org. We thank you for your faithful prayerful and financial support as we do what Jesus asks us to do… “to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and shelter the homeless.” God bless you. For more information contact Tara at [email protected] 609-387-2928. Please visit our web site goodcounselhomes.org, Facebook or Twitter. Come and rock our babies!

Pentecost Sunday “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7 To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and invite Him in! Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, words and actions every day! Be grateful for all the gifts God has given you! Regardless of our individual circumstances, God has given all of us many blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift back to God! By generously sharing everything we have and everything we are, we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered” and our lives truly reflect God’s light, love and mercy.
