Empresario era in Texas History• Started the creation of Anglo settlements•Coahuila and Texas were combined into 1 state, but there

were political divisions and tensions between the two•Mexican officials wanted to settle areas closest to the United

States to discourage US interference in Mexico•One point of tension was slavery. Empresarios generally

supported bringing slaves from the southern US into Texas, while the Mexican government was opposed to it.

BELL RINGER – Why did Mexico setup the Empresario System?

Page 16: Week of Nov. 3rd Texas History – Mr. Locke’s class.

High-level Overview – So Far• Only Native Americans live in Texas• Spanish Conquistadors explore Texas• Find no Gold• Discover that Native Americans can be hostile• THEREFORE – Spain has little interest in Texas

• 1685 La Salle arrives in Texas (by accident) and builds Ft. St. Louis• Spain is now concerned about the French intruding into Texas

• Spain creates the Mission-Presidio System to control Texas• Goal is to get Native Americans to become more “Spanish”• System fails since Indians don’t join in large numbers and many are still hostile

• Spain/Mexico creates the Empresario System to recruit settlers into Texas• Need a buffer zone between Mexico and the US• Most Mexicans don’t want to settle in Texas due to hostile Native Americans and

differences in geography• Empresarios focus mostly on recruiting settlers from US (who are to become Mexican)
