Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
¿Por quién estás orando?
¿De qué te abstienes?
¿Qué estás dando?
Who are you praying for?

What are you giving?
NB: The liturgy’s reading today is from year A while this commentary is for the
readings of year C
After last week’s theophany,
the Transfiguration of the
Lord, the proper disposition
of those seeking the Lord is
the subject of today’s liturgy.
Mankind, as is often the case,
has an erroneous thought process in his attitude towards
sin. During ancient times, people believed that tragic
events occurred due to the actions of individuals or their
ancestors. It was not unusual to view the birth defects of a
child on the actions of an ancestor who had disobeyed or
offended the Divine. God was viewed as a deity who struck
down and placed curses on those who offended him. In
effect, an innocent child would be the recipient of Divine
wrath due to the actions of another. Today’s Liturgy of the
Word corrects that misconception. Divine revelation
places the responsibility for evil upon the individual who
commits the offense. Repentance by the one responsible
for the sin is demanded in order that redemption and
mercy can be granted. God’s desire to care and be with His
Chosen People is manifested throughout our readings.
In today’s first reading from the Book of Exodus, Moses is
called by God to journey to Egypt and demand the release
of His People. Moses’ attention is garnered by a burning
bush that is not consumed. As the soon to be prophet ap-
proaches the bush, God calls out to him. Realizing the
Theogonic nature of the event, Moses hides his face out of
fear as the Lord tells him that the plight of the Chosen
People has been heard by the Divine Being. As a result,
God has decided to favorably respond and will come down
to rescue them. Moses inquires as to the Lord’s name in
order to prove his authority to those who would not know
him. In ancient times, by giving Moses the Divine name,
the Lord cedes to him authority that entitles the prophet to
speak for the Divine and enter binding covenantal
agreements.
In the second reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to
the Corinthians, Paul explains to the Corinthians the
purpose and failure of the Mosaic agreement. The Apostle
to the Gentiles explains that the lesson taught by the failure
of their ancestors should not go unheeded. Saint Paul
expresses that individuals are responsible for their own
actions and are responsible for their own sins. Paul desires
that Christians should not seek their own pleasures nor
grumble and become dissatisfied when things do not go the
way they want. Rather, the new Chosen People need to
accept whatever the Lord sends their way in the spirit of
Christ, who endured the Cross and was subsequently
glorified. As Christians awaited the return of the Messiah,
Paul announced that they should repent their sins and
accept their crosses with joy, in anticipation of the reward
that awaited them. He clearly elucidates the belief that each
individual is responsible for their own actions.
Finally, Jesus attempts to correct a common misconception
of why calamities occur. The Lord is told of Galileans who
have accidently died a violent death. The supposition is that
they or their ancestors had offended God and were thereby
cursed and quickly punished. Christ tells his followers that
God is not a God of vengeance. Calamities like this just
happen; however, what is important is that people repent
before it is too late. Christ emphasizes that everyone needs
repentance in order to open themselves to the mercy and
love of the Father. Only through this transformation
through repentance can the calamities that occur be
overcome and placed in proper perspective.
Today, Holy Mother the Church calls us to repentance. She
wants us to reveal to our world the mercy and love of the
Father. As we witness the disasters of the world, she
reassures all that the Father is a God of love and mercy. He
is a God that cares for His People and will deliver them
from the bonds that bind them. As Lent progresses, Holy
Mother the Church calls us to demonstrate the Christian
way through almsgiving, prayer and fasting. As we
dispossess ourselves of the material world, God calls us to
focus upon Him and His love that never ceases. Knowing
this, the crosses we incur will seem light as we await the
glorification that is to come.

SAINTS OF LENT: SAINT PETER REGALADO March 30 The fifteenth century was a busy time with wars in Europe, new innovations like the printing press and the discovery of America. During this era, Peter Regalado came from a wealthy and pious family in Spain. At an early age (13), he joined the Franciscan order. He embraced a life of great poverty and penance, leading by example and having great love for the poor and sick. One of the miracles attributed to St. Peter at this time was that the bread he gave to the poor never seemed to run put as long as there were hungry people to feed. For most of his life, St. Peter himself lived only on bread and water. He was a great leader of the Franciscan friars because he did not get angry over the sins of others. He helped them to dedicate themselves to living the Gospel in imitation of Christ.
A volunteer is needed to clean the votive candle holders once
a week. This means removing the remains of candles that have
been burnt out, removing any wax residue in the holders,
refilling the holders with new candles. Please tell Fr.Kiko or
Maria Carrillo if you would like to do this task.
Se necesita un voluntario para limpiar los candelabros votivos una
vez a la semana. Esto significa quitar los restos de velas que se
hayan quemado, eliminar cualquier residuo de cera en los
soportes, rellenar los nuevos con velas nuevas. Dígale a Fr.Kiko o
Maria Carrillo si desea hacer esta tarea.
