day of teaching people, Jesus rested as He and the disciples made their way across the Sea of Galilee. How do you think the events of the story would be different if Jesus were not asleep? At what point do you think the disciples would have turned to Him for help? At what point in your "storms" do you turn to God for help?

•Read Mark 4:39-40 and Luke 8:24b. Mark's term "ferocious squall" (v. 37) depicted grounds for fear. The boat was sinking, yes, but what better company to be in than with Jesus? Jesus Calmed a StormBased on Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25

One evening, Jesus said to His disciples, "Let's go to the other side of the sea." Jesus and the disciples, along with other boats set sail across the lake. During the trip, a terrible storm started. [Direct the children to begin making storm effects. Speak louder.] The waves were coming up over the sides of the boat. The boat was tossed around on the sea. While the storm was taking place, Jesus was sleeping below deck. The disciples woke Jesus up. They said to Him, "Do You not care that we are going to die?"

Jesus got up and rebuked the wind. He said to the sea, "Silence! Be still!" The winds stopped blowing and everything grew calm. [Guide children to stop the sound effects.]

Jesus asked, "Why were you afraid? Do you still not have faith?"

This made the disciples even more afraid. They asked each other, "Who is this Man? The wind and the water obey Him!"

Experiments (June 3) Worship KidStyle Children’s Edition, Summer 2012© 2012 LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Printed in USA. OK to copy.

Creating Lightning1. Push a thumbtack through the bottom of a

pan. Insert the thumbtack into the eraser so the pencil stands up straight (as shown).

2. Place the plate upside down on the table. Briskly rub the wool on the plate for 1-2 minutes.

3. Using the pencil as a handle, pick up the pie pan and place it on top of the plate.

4. Touch the pie pan with your finger. Did you feel a mild shock?

5. Repeat the experiment with the lights turned out, watching for an electrical spark.

Measuring the Wind1. Punch holes in the sides of all four cups.2. Locate and mark the center of the plate.3. Insert brads through the holes in the cups

and attach to the edge of the plate at 12:00; 3:00; 6:00 and 9:00. Ensure the openings of the cups all point the same direction (see picture). Tape bases of the cups in place. Decorate the cups.

4. Insert the thumbtack through the center of the plate and attach to the top of the dowel stick.

5. Blow on the cups to turn.6. Say: "Watch how many times the cups move

around the circle. The number of turns per minute tells how fast the wind is blowing."

Option: Take the anemometer outside and measure the wind speed.
