parent, teacher, or guardian? Hopefully, that person followed through on that promise. Sometimes, though, people make mistakes and don’t fulfill the prom-ises they’ve made. This can be really disappointing to us and may cause us to struggle to trust that person’s promises the next time. Fortunately, there is one Person who will never break His promises: Jesus. In today’s story, we see that Jesus fulfilled the promise He made to His disciples. He told them He would rise again after His death, and indeed He did.

A few women who were important to Jesus and loved Him went to visit His tomb the morning after the Sabbath was over. These disciples wanted to anoint His body with oils. When they arrived, they were very distressed to see that the stone in front of the tomb had been rolled away. They immediately thought that someone had stolen Jesus’ body. But then two angels appeared and reminded the women of Jesus’ promise to rise again. The women excitedly went to tell the other disciples what they had seen and heard. However, most of the men did not believe them, but Peter ran to the tomb to see for himself, and only then did he fully believe the women’s story.

Later that day, Jesus appeared to two disciples walking on the road, but they didn’t know it was Him. They talked together and invited Jesus back to their house for some food. Once Jesus broke the bread, they immediately recognized Him because He was repeating what He did at the Last Supper. They were relieved to know that Jesus had indeed fulfilled His promise. In this story, there are three different reactions to Jesus’ resurrection. The women were at first confused but then excited; Peter disbelieved until he saw the proof for himself and then was amazed; and the two disciples were blind to Jesus until He broke bread, and then they felt relieved. What might your reaction have been to this news? • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •THINK ABOUT IT! The resurrection of Jesus is crucial to the Christian faith. Without it, we would have no hope for our future. If Jesus didn’t defeat death, then how could we live forever with Him in heaven? If He couldn’t save us from our sin with His own blood, then who could? When we talk about Easter and Jesus’ resurrection, it should fill us with excitement! Through this, we have hope and joy and a future that will certainly be something to look forward to. We know that we can trust Jesus’ promises, including the one that He will come back again someday.
