3. APPEARING HEARTS W H AT Y O U N E E D : White butcher paper; white crayon; watercolor blocks of any dark color, one for every four children; paintbrushes; water; small bowls, one for every four children; smocks or oversized t-shirts; and wet wipes.

W H AT Y O U D O : B E F O R E T H E A C T I V I T Y: Place the paper on a table and use the crayon to draw several hearts—large and small—all over the paper. Try to cover the entire paper with hearts. You will not be able to see the hearts as you draw them so work from one side to the other so that you don’t overlap. Place the watercolor blocks into the bowls and add enough water to just cover the blocks.

D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: Protect clothing with smocks or t-shirts. Invite the children to dip their paintbrush onto the block and paint the paper to reveal the hearts. Continue the activity until all of the hearts have been revealed.

2. LOVE TALKW H AT Y O U N E E D : “People Cards” Activity Page, cardstock, red yarn, scissors, and masking tape

W H AT Y O U D O : B E F O R E T H E A C T I V I T Y: Copy “People Cards” onto cardstock and cut the pictures apart, one set of six per small group. Cut a long piece of red yarn.

NOTE: Test your red yarn with the “People Cards” to make sure the yarn is long enough to connect all of the pictures and make a heart.

D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: Tape the “People Cards” to the floor in such a way that when you connect the cards with the red yarn it makes a heart. Tape one end of the yarn to the first card. Encourage the children to repeat, “Jesus wants to be your friend forever” as you go to each card. Each time you are at one of the cards, tape that section of the red yarn to the card. When you have gone to each of the six cards, the red yarn will make a heart shape.

W H AT Y O U S AY:D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: “Peter learned that Jesus wants everyone to be His friend forever. That means we need to tell everyone that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. Hey, will you help me tell all of these people Jesus wants to be their friend forever? And when we’re done, we can see what shape the yarn makes. Ready? (Tape the yarn to the first card and say together) Jesus wants to be your friend forever! (Tape yarn to second card and say together) Jesus wants to be your friend forever.” (Continue taping the yarn and repeating the phrase “Jesus wants to be your friend forever” with all six cards.)

A F T E R T H E A C T I V I T Y: “We did it! We told all of the people that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. What shape did the red yarn make? (Pause.) Yes! The red yarn made a heart. A heart is the perfect shape to remind us that Jesus loves everyone, and everyone can believe in Jesus. Right? (Pause.) Right! Who can bel ieve in Jesus? I can bel ieve in Jesus !”

W H AT Y O U D O : D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: Gather the children to sit with you in the activity area. Teach the children how to say, “Jesus loves you” in several different languages as time and interest allow. You will want to choose one or two that best fit your demographic to concentrate on.

W H AT Y O U S AY:D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: “Do any of you speak a different language? Maybe someone in your family speaks Spanish or French or Chinese. Today, I want to teach you how to say, ‘Jesus loves me’ in different languages!

“First, let’s learn it in sign language. This is the language you use to speak to people who can’t hear. So, we use our hands. Watch this. (Demonstrate.)“Jesus (Press the middle finger of your right hand to your left palm, then press your left middle finger to your right palm.)“Loves (Cross arms over chest.)“You. (Point to others.)

“In Spanish and Portuguese, Jesus loves you is Jesús te ama.“In Chinese, Jesus loves you is Yēsū ài nǐ. W H AT Y O U D O : B E F O R E T H E A C T I V I T Y: Make one copy of “Purple House,” “Yellow House,” “Orange House,” and “Green House” on white cardstock. Make enough copies of “House Cards” on white cardstock so that when cut apart, each child will draw at least one card; cut cards apart.

D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: Tape one of the house pages to each wall in the room or spread them out on one wall, whatever works best for your space. Place the “House Cards” face down for the children to take turns drawing a card. Each time a child draws a card, they must go (hop, skip, walk, tip-toe, jump, etc.) to the house on the wall that matches it and tell the people living there, “Jesus wants to be your friend forever.”

W H AT Y O U S AY: D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: “In today’s story, Peter learned that Jesus wants everyone to believe in Him. No matter what they look like, what language they speak, or where they live, Jesus loves them; and He wants to be their friend forever! I have a game that will help us practice telling everyone about Jesus. All you do is draw a card, go to the house on the wall that matches your card, and tell them, ‘Jesus wants to be your friend forever.’ Got it? Let’s play!” (Play as long as the children are having fun. Reshuffle the cards and play again when all of the cards have been drawn.)

W H AT Y O U D O : B E F O R E T H E A C T I V I T Y: Copy the “I Spy Label” onto label paper, one label per child. Set the plates, large craft sticks, and tape on the table.

D U R I N G T H E A C T I V I T Y: Give each child a clear dessert plate and a large craft stick. Help each child use the clear tape to secure the large craft stick to the back of the plate. Give each child an “I Spy Label” to place on the craft stick handle. Encourage the children to hold them up as magnifying glasses to practice spying someone who believes in Jesus.

6. JOURNAL AND PRAYER W H AT Y O U N E E D : Paperclip “Memory Verse Card” in your Bible at John 20:31. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each Small Group. You will also need reward stickers or hand stamp for saying the Bible verse.

S M A L L G R O U P L E A D E R ( S G L ) : “It’s Small Group time. Today, we’ll hook arms with a friend or two and walk together to our Small Group spot. So, find a friend and hook arms like this. (Demonstrate.) Okay friends, follow me! (Lead the children to your small group spot.)

“We made it! Friends make everything more fun! Let’s sit down and talk about today’s Bible story. One, two, three, sit down with me! (Open the Bible and lay it in front of the children.)

“Our Bible story, today, was about a man named Peter. Peter learned that Jesus loves everyone, and He wants to be everyone’s friend forever. It doesn’t matter where people live, what they look like, what language they speak, or what their favorite food is; Jesus loves everyone and wants to be their friend! We can read Peter’s story right here in the Bible. (Hold up Bible.)

“Peter’s story helps us know that we can believe in Jesus, too, because Jesus loves everyone and wants to be everyone’s friend. So, tell me, who can bel ieve in Jesus?”

S G L : “You sure can! And the Bible verse we have been learning even says that the stories in the Bible are written so that we can believe in Jesus. It says . . . (Turn the pages of your Bible to the Memory Verse Card.)

Give each child the opportunity to say the verse on their own. Have your stickers or handstamp ready to give when they say it.

S G L : “I am so proud of you, (child’s name)! Here is your sticker! (Repeat with each child as they try the Bible verse.)

“Now, it’s time to write in our journal and pray. (Hold journal and fun-shaped pen.)

“Peter learned that he should tell everyone about Jesus, because Jesus wants everyone to believe in Him and be His friend forever. I think we should make a list of people we can tell about Jesus. It can be anyone, because Jesus wants us to tell everyone that they can believe in Him. When I say your name, tell me one person you can tell about Jesus. (Say each child’s name and write down what they say. Remember to print the names so the children can recognize their names and the letters.)

“We have another special list of people today. Let’s use our list when we talk to God. Would anyone like to pray before I pray?”

Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.
