N ow that the Christmas Season is over, we begin our Season of Ordinary Time in a similar way

with a manifestation, an epiphany of Jesus as Mes-siah. NEXT WEEKEND SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCHES IN NEED Each year, the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE) assists

Catholics, many of whom live in countries once dominated by the Soviet regime, with rebuilding their communities. This important collection supports 28 countries in a

myriad of ways, from providing funds to rebuild church structures to supporting pro-

grams that lift up the dignity of the marginalized to offering scholarships that rein-

force the intellectual life of the Church. By taking up this collection at Mass, you help to build the future for the faithful in this region.

After the fall of communism in Romania, virtually none of the Greek Catholic church-

es that were confiscated by the communist regime were recovered. As a symbol of the

sacrifice of their ancestors, the Eparchy of Cluj-Gherla began construction of the Ca-thedral of the Martyrs and Confessors of the Twentieth Century in the city of Cluj-

Napoca in 1992. With the support of your parishioners to the Collection for CCEE, the

cathedral is on target to be completed in 2018. It will serve as a place of prayer but also as a location for pas-toral care, hosting a library, conference hall, and activities for children and youth, as well as an exhibition of

the history of the eparchy. Your support of this collection is providing a place of prayer, gathering, and

learning for the people of this eparchy.

Last Monday we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord which ended our Christmas Season and marked Jesus’ initiation into public ministry. With this celebra-tion we recommit ourselves to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Initiated through our Baptism we too are commissioned to proclaim Good News with our lives. This Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is also a good opportunity for us to reflect on the calling of a vocation to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life. To pray for vocations, to recog-nize gifts and potential for leadership and service in members of our parish; and to call forth and encourage these members to share their gifts in Priesthood, Diaconate and Consecrated Life. Perhaps you know a man or woman (high school age or older) who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to become a Priest, Sister or Brother. Please recommend this person by contacting our Diocesan Vocation office:

Fr. Sean Suckiel Pope John Paul II House of Discernment 341 Highland Avenue

Brooklyn, NY 11207

718-827-2454 [email protected]

We ask Our Lord for more dedicated, holy priests, deacons and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith community and respond generously to God’s gift of a voca-tion.

“God of gracious love, you gathered us first at the waters of Baptism and you lead us through life with faithfulness. Raise up from among our Parish Family, leaders to serve your people as Priests, Deacons, Sisters and Brothers.

To those whom you call, give grace and courage to discern how they may best serve you. To all of us, give us good hearts so we might encourage them along the way.

We ask this through Jesus Christ and with your Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

“Fear not, for I have called you by name; you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1)

THE SEASON OF ORDINARY TIME

Apart from those seasons having their own distinctive character (e.g. Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter), there remains in the yearly cycle those weeks (33/34) that do not celebrate a specific mystery of Christ. Rather, especially on Sundays, they are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its fullness. This period is known as Ordinary Time. (General Norms,43)

Most of the Seasons of the Church Year are organized around the two major festivals that mark sacred time, Christmas and Easter. The Christmas Season encompasses the time of preparation during Advent, the cele-bration of the Twelve Days of Christmas, Epiphany in early January and ends with the Baptism of the Lord. The Easter Season encompasses the time of preparation during the 40 days of Lent and Holy Week and is linked with Pentecost Sunday 50 days later. While there are other individual holy days within the church year, these seasons mark the movement of sacred time within the church calendar.

The rest of the year following Epiphany and Pentecost is known as Ordinary Time. Rather than meaning "common" or "mundane" this term comes from the word "ordinal" (derived from the Latin word “ordo”) which simply means counted or ordered time (Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Third, Fourth…..). Ordi-nary Time is the liturgical period outside of the distinctive liturgical seasons. In Latin, Ordinary Time is called “Tempus Per Annum” ("time throughout the year"). Ordinary Time falls between Christmas and Lent and between Easter and Advent. The Feast of Christ the King is the last Sunday of Ordinary Time and of the liturgical year. The liturgical color is green, a sign of hope and growth in our love and knowledge of Jesus and the Church as we reflect on Jesus’ preaching and teaching mission.

The Latin Cross and Ichthys are symbols of our religion

ΙΧΘΥΣ (Ichthys) is an acronym for "Ίησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ", (Iēsous

Christos, Theou Yios, Sōtēr), which translates into English as "Jesus Christ, God's

Son, Savior". It is the Greek word for fish. It was used by the early Christians as a

secret Christian symbol, especially in the catacombs. Known as “the sign of the

fish” or the “Jesus fish”.
