From the Principal … Welcome to Week 8 where we have had another busy few weeks here at Governor. We are all aware of the updates and additional information being provided around Covid 19 through the daily media. Governor Philip King Public School is a safe learning place for your child each day. Our school receives timely updated information from our Secretary – School Operation and Performance, Mark Scott and the Deputy Secretary – School Operations and Performance, Murat Dizdar, that we pass on to parents to ensure you are as informed and updated as we are. Our school has ample soap and toilet paper for students. Our teachers will continue to encourage regular hand washing, as we anticipate you are doing at home. As with any situation and time where your child may be feeling sick, please keep your child at home if they are unwell. As always, I will continue to keep our community fully informed with updates from the DoE and NSW Health. I greatly appreciate the trust and understanding our community has in our communication strategies. Please be assured that your children, and their health and well-being, are our priorities at the moment. Please ensure you have read the information that was sent home with families yesterday. We have also posted all information and updates on our Skoolbag app and on our Facebook page. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Hosking on the safe arrival of baby Jack Hosking last Tuesday. We were all very excited to hear this great news. Jack arrived at 12.56pm weighing 3.4kgs and being 50cm in length. Everyone has settled in at home and we look forward to meeting him very soon. In the meantime… Our new library furniture arrived last week. It looks amazing and adds a new, bright dimension to library lessons for our students. Thank you to Mr Lorello for continuing to make our library an amazing and welcoming place to be! Week 8 Term 1 17 March 2020

Congratulations to Austin, Danica and Katee; these three students represented our school at the Area Swimming Carnival last Tuesday. We are very proud of our students and their achievements. Congratulations to Katee who qualified for the Sydney South West State Swimming Carnival in the 200m individual medley and the 50m butterfly. Thank you to Miss Skoric and Miss Vukovich for supporting our students on the day of the carnival.

Our students have access to some amazing resources through our school library and in classrooms. Our students in 3-6 have access to Literacy Pro and our K-2 students have access to high quality levelled readers. We love seeing our students excited about reading and engaging with books and a variety of texts through various media. I enjoy hearing about the amazing texts our students are engaging with. However, I am setting a challenge for our students. My challenge is to read every single day (yes, even on the weekends!). I want our students to be reading an appropriate levelled or lexiled text at their reading ability. I would like to see our students reading for at least 20 minutes per day. Reading helps to improve vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Take up the challenge and work towards joining the Millionaire’s Club!! Mum and Dad; I need your help to reinforce this at home. Please ensure your child is reading every day of the week. Talk to your children about what they are reading, ask about the types of books they enjoy, listen to your child read, even model reading by sitting down to read a book while your child does.

Our core school rules are: ‘Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner. We consistently speak about our rules with students and they quite often appear in our newsletter. I always expect my staff to demonstrate and model respectful interactions with students and parents, the exact same way we would expect students to be respectful of teachers, other students and visitors to our school. It is timely to remind our entire Governor Community that if issues or problems arise, we are always happy to discuss issues and attempt to resolve problems. My staff are extremely busy with teaching, meetings and professional learning throughout the working week. They are not always available of a morning or afternoon or at a time requested (or on some occasions demanded) by parents. The easiest way to ensure things are resolved is to make an appointment through the front office. This way a mutually convenient time can be set aside. Please contact the front office to make any requested appointments. Last Thursday night, our students enjoyed an afternoon/evening of dancing and fun at the first school disco for 2020. Thank you to our School Parliament for organising and running such a successful event. Thank you to the staff who stayed back to ensure everything ran smoothly. Thank you also to our students and community for always supporting our events.

Finally a personal message:

Opal Cove Resort is the perfect location for both leisure or business; a relaxing peaceful holiday for the whole family with Coffs Harbour Accommodation facilities to suit all budgets. Opal Cove creates a relaxed coastal resort atmosphere.

I would personally like to thank the management and staff of Opal Cove Resort for their generosity and care towards a good friend and colleague I have worked with in a previous school. She has worked tirelessly over many decades dedicating her life to educating children and providing high quality education in a public school setting. Sadly she is losing a very difficult health battle. The staff at Opal Cove Resort will ensure her holiday is wonderful and memorable.

Please take the time to look at the Opal Cove Resort website if you are considering a holiday in Coffs Harbour.

I look forward to a win by the Sharks this coming weekend!! #upupcronulla

Have a great week! Jason Corcoran Principal Deputy Principal’s Message … As always, we have been very busy at GPK this term. Our staff and students have once again embraced the PC Robotics Kit that we borrowed from the Stem Technology 4 Learning team. The kits included: Lego Mindstorms EV3, Ozobots, Makey Makeys and Micro:bits.

Congratulations to Danica, Katee and Austin who competed at the Sydney South West Swimming Carnival on Tuesday 10th March. To compete at this level is an amazing accomplishment and we are all very proud of your individual achievements. Katee did place 3rd in the 200m individual medley and 50m butterfly, however, the State Swimming carnival has been postponed until further notice. A huge thank you to Miss Skoric, Miss Vukovich and Mrs Stanger who organised our annual school disco. I’d also like to thank the staff, students and our families that attended our disco and supported the first Stage Three fundraiser of the year. Everyone had a great time!

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used the ‘Tell Them From Me’ to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is completely confidential. It is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. The Survey will be administered during school hours between 16th March and 8th May. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. With only three weeks left of Term One, and in accordance with the NSW Department of Education introducing social distancing measures in our schools, we have had to cancel many events coming up. Some of these include: Scripture, PSSA, K-6 Police Talks, Years 2-6 Athletics carnival, SRL morning tea, Little GPK’s, K-6 Whole School Assembly, recess with a Cop and the K-2 Easter Hat Parade. Please be confident that as a school we are doing everything that we can to ensure that GPK is as safe as possible for our students, staff and community. Ms Biljana Stojanoska Relieving Deputy Principal

Values Education - The value for Weeks 8 and 9 is Understanding. Understanding of oneself and others is the knowledge that we all have equal worth. We all play a valuable part in the world. Each individual is unique with his/her own talents. Please promote Understanding of each other in the home environment and encourage children to practise it. They will be better people if they can practise understanding towards others and the environment.

Harmony Day 2020 – Everyone Belongs

Date: Thursday, 19th of March, 2020. Term 1, Week 8.

Harmony Day is a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity. In 2020 the Harmony Day theme is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It recognises the important role and positive influence that cultural diversity has in our multicultural nation.

Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and make it a better place.

GPKPS will be making a special effort to recognise Harmony Day on Thursday, 19th of March, 2020. As the official Harmony Day colour is orange, students are encouraged to wear something orange on this day, to show their support for the idea of living in harmony. This will be a mufti day for all students, but no money is required. EAL/D and CL Teachers
