From the PrincipalA Question of Identity

In a newsletter towards the end of

last term I made reference to the

School Renewal Process which will be

undertaken at CBC Fremantle in March

of next year. This process is designed

to determine how strongly the policies

and practices of our school align with

the Charter for Catholic Schools in the

Edmund Rice Tradition. A review panel

will visit the school to examine how we

are incorporating the four Touchstones of

Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality,

Inclusive Community and Justice and

Solidarity into our daily practice.

The process is comprehensive and

designed to facilitate positive change

for our school community. Parents,

staff, students and former students will

be invited to participate and give their

views on the culture and direction of

our College. Those directly involved will

be advised early next year and we look

forward to benefitting from the wisdom

and insight they will undoubtedly offer.

Although much greater detail will be

provided closer to the time of the review,

it is opportune to look in more depth

at the Touchstones or characteristics

that should be evident in the authentic CBC Fremantle

Catholic School in the Edmund Rice

Tradition. These are expressed in

aspirational terms but should be evident

to all members of our community in

each interaction they have as part of the

College.

Liberating Education – Opening hearts

and minds through quality teaching and

learning experiences, so that through

critical reflection and engagement each

person is hope-filled and free to build a

better world for all.

Gospel Spirituality – Inviting all people

into the story of Jesus and striving to

make his message of compassion, justice

and peace a living reality within our

community.

Inclusive Community – Being a

community which is accepting and

welcoming, fosters right relationships and

is committed to the common good.

Justice and Solidarity – Being committed

to justice and peace for all, grounded in

a spirituality of action and reflection that

calls us to stand in solidarity with those

who are marginalised.

Schools are often discussed or evaluated

in terms of the academic, cultural or

sporting programmes they offer. While

providing quality in these areas will

always be a priority for CBC Fremantle,

these Touchstones serve to remind us

that an education at our school has far

deeper significance.

Mr Shaun Kenny

Principal

Dear Parents of Year 9 Boys 2014

Year 9 is recognised as a time of

significant change in the lives of

adolescent boys, and a time when

boys begin to grow from children to

young men. It is widely recognised as

an important developmental stage

when boys may look to establish their

independence, test boundaries, take risks

and question some aspects of authority.

For some, this can lead to disengagement

in their learning. As educators of good

young men, College staff are very aware

of the research in this regard and, with

this in mind, CBC Fremantle introduced

The Rite Journey in 2012.

The Rite Journey is a unique educational

programme designed for Year 9 boys

which supports the development of

engaged, responsible and resilient young

adults. In a culture where the period

for adolescence can vary considerably,

and where young adults can receive

very conflicting messages about good

values and expected behaviours, The

Rite Journey assists our boys with their

decision-making, goal-setting and self-

awareness as they begin to make their

transition into healthy, respectful and

responsible young men.

The Rite Journey programme provides

young men with the opportunity of

experiencing rites of passage and

important life lessons, created and guided

by caring teachers and significant adult

mentors. The year-long programme will

be delivered to all of our Year 9 students

from the beginning of the school year and

will require the support and engagement

of families to assist the boys as they

‘journey’ throughout the year.

With this in mind, an important Parent

Information Evening has been scheduled

for Tuesday 3 December 2013. This

will allow for further explanation of

The Rite Journey programme at CBC

Fremantle. The evening will look to

provide information on topics including

The Rite Journey 2014

Page 7: Week 6 term 4

CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 6 Term 4

the background of The Rite Journey,

ceremonies and events, challenge

activities, the programme outline for CBC

Fremantle, the camp experience and

the role of parents and other adult male

mentors.

As parents of our Year 9 boys, we

consider it essential that you gain

an understanding of the aims of the

programme and the various elements

within it. The College considers your

attendance at this Information Evening

as vitally important and looks forward to

seeing you there.

Celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, in the presence of his Grace the Papal Nuncio.

The Marian Novena is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The overall theme invites

everyone to journey with Mary towards her Son, directed by Scripture. The Novena will culminate with the Mass of

Solemnity of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the presence of the Papal Nuncio on 9 December.

As the Novena coincides with Advent, the time spent in Holy Hour is a wonderful opportunity for personal preparation for

the great feast of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus.
