Smell and taste Point at nose and a tongue. Talk about what they do with their nose and tongue. Let the children smell and then taste a lemon, (or lemon juice) an orange and some salt. Talk about the taste and smell .We smell and taste our food using the nose for smelling and the tongue for tasting. Does it taste the same if we cover our nose? Our senses also keep us safe e.g. we can smell if there is fire etc. Talk about taking care of our senses/organs (nose and tongue) e.g. making sure that we do not put objects in the nose, do not drink liquids that are too hot etc. Sight Children close their eyes; ask if they are able to see with their eyes closed. Open their eyes and tell what they see. Which part of the body they use? Talk about the importance of the eyes e.g. making it possible for us to see unsafe situations, help us read and write etc. Talk about taking care of our eyes e.g. looking after our eyes by wearing a cap and sunglasses when the sun is too hot, not looking directly in the sun etc. Hearing Talk about what we do with our ears. Close eyes listen to sounds, clap hands, hit a pot etc. what do you hear? How does hearing help us? Listening to instructions, listening for danger (cars, thunder, etc.) Talk about taking care of our ears e.g. not put objects in the ears, not to use ear buds to clean the ears, not to listen to loud music etc. Touch Touch the different parts of the body. Which part of the body was used to touch other parts of the body? Put various objects in a “feely” bag. Cover eyes, identify the objects without looking. Talk about hands, fingers and skin (used to touch/feel.) Talk about the importance of the sense of touch - if you touch something hot you will feel it and move away.
