At Windsor High School our students have had lots of opportunities to shine at school and in our local community. All of Year 10 attended a mandatory Field trip to Observatory Hill Education Centre at Mosman for their Geogra-phy Stage 5 course. They could not have asked for better weather for a day at the beach! Year 7 participated in the Macquarie Zone Gala Day, which involves participation from all schools in our zone. We had students represent Windsor High School in Touch Football, Soccer and Netball with great sportsman-ship and teamwork. Congratulations to all students who played despite the warm weather. A huge thank you

to our senior SLR students, Aiden, Keegan, Max and Tymika, who umpired and refereed the games all day!

Some great learning opportunities occurred in our classrooms. Ms. Mooney's 8W History class created some outstanding Viking models ranging from 'Cluedo style' board games based on the Viking Era, amazing shields,

Viking costumes and jewellery and even Viking longhouses. Fantastic work Year 8!

Mr Bonaccorso and students put in a huge event playing at the Hawkesbury Music Festival. They were re-quired to attend rehearsals three nights in a row, and then perform different pieces for different guests for an-other three nights. Some performances were just our students, who dominated the Tuesday Night Show on the main stage. They also accompanied the choir and supported other high schools and primary schools with their performance items on all three nights. We have received a number of congratulatory emails from mem-bers of the audience who do not have students currently attending Windsor High School. Well done to all in-

volved and those who helped with transportation of these students!!!

The Stage 4 English syllabus includes a unit of work on the Gothic genre. As a part of this students have been studying the texts “Frankenstein” and ‘Dracula”. Students in Year 8 have been required as a part of the assessment schedule to create a Gothic Play Dioramas. These exhibits display student knowledge of a Goth-

ic Play studied in class, the Gothic Genre and the dramatic elements of designing a stage.

Year 11 students completed their Preliminary Courses at the end of Term Three. These students have started the HSC syllabus for all subjects at the beginning of this Term. We thought it appropriate that students are provided the time management skills and study skills to be successful at the beginning of the HSC Course, as well as the rules and regulations that NESA have put in place. Our new 2019 HSC students spent a day learn-ing about how to succeed in the HSC year, with presentations from school staff as well as Elevate- an external

provider who specializes in the development of study skills for High School students.

Miss Talidu’s ‘Artist of the Week’ is Nathaniel in Year 7. He has shown great patience and attention to

detail when painting his self-portrait. Well done, Nathaniel!

Mrs West’s students of the week are Mariah and Bonny. Congratula-

tions for being such diligent students.

Well Done to all the students who have done their very best this week at Windsor High

School- the best school in the Hawkesbury Valley!

Science Report

Excursions- Our Space Camp Excursion was a great success- we are still hearing more little bits of feedback from the students who were involved. It seems that there was just so much that they did that it was just too much to remember in the one session. The one thing they have all said is that they had a fantastic time and learned a lot about Science and Technology in the process. This is exactly what we were hoping that they would get from the experience. Coming up soon this term, we have organised a day of workshops for year 7 students. The UWS chapter of “Engineers Without Borders” in conjunction with the Science teachers and Mr Said from TAS, will run work-shops which will challenge students to come up with solutions for some real world problems, then build or cre-ate a device and test their solution. Over the day, each student will do four different challenges. Permission notes will be coming home soon. VALID Tests – The ‘VALID’ Science Assessment Tests for all year 8 students will be done next Week on Tuesday 6th November. This is a statewide test and is compulsory for year 8 students. All classes will be given an opportunity to sit a practise test prior to this date to familiarise themselves with how the portal works, the styles of questions and some examples of the type of content that will be examined in the test. A copy of the notification letter sent home with students is also included later in this newsletter. Assessments- This term has also been a very busy one for year 10 who are at this moment handing in their final assessment for Science. Students have completed a long term Research Project, involving designing and carrying out an experimental investigation of their own choice. They presented a written report of their experi-ment and a log book in which they have kept a record of their process- including successes and failures over the eight weeks of the task. We hope that they have enjoyed investigating their own problem and from some of the student comments, there have been some interesting and unexpected conclusions. Year 7 have also handed in their States of Matter Project. The task required them to represent the particulate nature of solids, liquids and gases using a model. We have had videos, animations, ‘Powtoon’ creations, physi-cal models, ‘Claymations’ and many other styles of model presented. Their application and creativity is appre-ciated and will make for interesting marking. Regrettably we cannot publish many of these types of models to show off their innovative creations. Classes continue to cover their courses and students will be revising for their Yearly Examinations coming up very soon. Students are advised to make a study plan which includes summarising important concepts and revising over their topics. They are also reminded that there is a wealth of material for revision on their class’ “GOOGLE CLASSROOM” pages to help them prepare for these examinations. We wish all students the best of success in their examinations.

2018 VALID Science Assessment

Dear Parent or Carer

The Validation of Asse ssment for Learning & Individual Development (VALID) test for Year

8 students will be held at school on Tuesday 6th November. Students who are absent on that

day will complete their test on their return. The test takes approximately 70 minutes. The

VALID Science 8 test is an interactive, multimedia test completed entirely on a computer.

VALID Science 8 contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are

grouped around real-world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic

test, with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years K

–10 Syllabus. Students will be tested on their:

• knowledge and understanding of science

• understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation

• ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically

• ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.

Students also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values about science and

technology.

Since students complete VALID Science 8 on a computer, each student needs to bring head-

phones or earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an iPod or portable player

are suitable. Please do not bring WiFi or Bluetooth earphones. The Science faculty has a

small number of earbuds for loan in the event that students forget their own.

If your child has a disability that needs special consideration or has been educated in English

for less than one year, please contact Mrs Hawken to discuss special provisions or possible

exemption from the test.

Results of the test will be available during Term 1 2019. Information about each student is

treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that the right to privacy of all students is

maintained. A personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers to describe the

science knowledge and skills demonstrated by the student in the test. There will also be infor-

mation about how your child’s results compare with overall performance of all students in

the test.

The Principal Mrs Hawken or Head Teacher Science Mrs Greenhalgh are able to provide you

with more details about the VALID program if you require additional information.

Yours sincerely

Jennifer Hawken Robyn Greenhalgh
