presentations to talk one on one with teachers about specific subjects. The night was very well attended and I am sure those who did so felt they gained from attendance. They certainly enjoyed the supper

provided by the hospitality students.

Windsor High continues to provide students with a wide range of vocational opportunities. On Friday, a group of Year 10 students attended an excursion to the RAAF base, to find out about transport and logistics (See further in the newsletter for more

information and photographs).

Students will be reminded this week about appropriate behaviour in the classroom. No student has the right to interfere in the learning that takes place in a class. At Windsor High we have a zero tolerance for such disruptive behaviour- all students are required to be respectful learners. We ask parents to reinforce this idea, and support us in ensuring all students are able to meet their potential. Looking forward to a great week . Regards Jennifer Hawken

WEEK 3, TERM 3 Windsor High School

Windsor On Stage On Thursday the 28 July, Windsor High School pre-sented Windsor On Stage, our annual school matinee concert for our primary feeder schools. The concert showcased the best talent Windsor High School has to offer and this year on the stage our students were joined by primary schools who contributed poetry, mu-sical and drama performances. The concert was a two hour event and was attended by just over 500 eager primary students and teachers who cheered non-stop throughout the concert. The atmosphere was fantas-tic and enjoyed by all. I would like to thank both our wonderful and hardworking Music and Entertainment students who worked for 5 days to setup, rehearse and run the show. Congratulations to all on a wonder-ful show!

Jeans for Genes Day

On Friday the 5th of August, the SRC members will be holding a Jeans for Genes day. All students will be permitted to wear jeans to school on this day in return for making a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go to the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI). ‘CMRI’s work is carried out with the single aim to improve and extend the lives of children. Currently, one in twen-ty children is born with a congenital abnormality or genetic disease. That’s over 12,000 children born in Australia each year with a problem. CMRI is dedicated to changing that. Medical research is the only way to discover cures for conditions affecting children such as cancer, epilepsy and a range of genetic defects. CMRI’s vital work does not receive

guaranteed government funding.’

Deputy Principal’s Report White Ribbon Program Windsor High School is now formally recognised as a White Ribbon School. Last year we successfully planned and hosted an event on White Ribbon day to raise awareness of the impact domestic violence has on our community. Students and staff were able to participate in a number of awareness raising activi-ties throughout the day. This year we have continued to build on this success with a number of events planned for the remainder of the year. Firstly a 10m x 4m White Ribbon mural is to be constructed on the school grounds in coming weeks. A competition for the mural design was run last year which has been won by Renee Taylor of Year 11. Renee’s design is a strong representation of the message behind the White Ribbon program. I urge all students to have a close look at this message once the mural is com-

pleted. Congratulations Renee!

As you would be aware we are also hosting a Mys-tery Movie Night in support of ‘White Ribbon Night’ on Wednesday the 3rd August from 6.30pm. Pop-corn, drinks and a sausage sizzle will be available on the night. We are very hopeful to see as many students and their parents as possible on what we are hoping will be an entertaining and successful night. Later in the year we will also be hosting an inter-schools soccer challenge with the winner to re-ceive the White Ribbon Cup. All the Hawkesbury high schools have been invited for what should be a very exciting and competitive day. Planning has also started for White Ribbon day on 25th Novem-ber. As I mentioned earlier we are hoping to build on the success of last year with an even bigger and better day with a vast array of opportunities for

students to engage and participate.

Vivo Merit System From the start of Term 4 Windsor High School will be rolling out a new whole school merit system called Vivo. Vivo is an online system that allows students to accumulate points collected in class for excellent work and effort as well as other areas of the school. Students and parents will have the abil-ity to keep track of their points through a free to download smart phone app. Students will still be able to work toward Windsor High’s milestones of Classroom Teacher, Head Teacher, Year Advisor, Deputy Principal and Principal’s Awards. A new feature of this system will be an ability to purchase items with accumulated points. Students will be able to choose from small items such as key rings, stationary and USB’s through to mobile phone co-vers, iPods and with lots of hard work even an iPad or Tablet. Stay tuned for more information later this term. Mr S. Mudiman

What’s happening in the library This week, the school was gifted with a gorgeous resource book on the works of Tom Roberts.

This stunning hard cover resource has now been added to the school

library collection for all members of the school community to enjoy.

The accompanying letter read as:

Dear Principal, Please find enclosed a gift from the National Gallery of Australia – the exhibition catalogue from the Tom Roberts exhibition, for use by your students and teachers. This publication was created in association with the NGA’s popular exhibition devoted to the key Australian artist of the Federation era, Tom Roberts. Thanks to the generosity of a number of private supporters, this publication is being offered to secondary schools across the nation for the benefit of students interested in this formative era of Australian history, pivotal to the understanding of our society today. Tom Roberts (1856 - 1931), was a pioneering artist in his adopted country of Australia. In addition to his great narrative pictures like Shearing the rams, he was also a skilled portrait and landscape painter, and his efforts to share his knowledge with many younger, emerging artists led to him being referred to as the ‘Father of Australian Painting’. This book provides the most up to date insight into Tom Roberts’ life and work, as well as his impact and legacy. In this special schools edition, you will find a note from the Prime Minister recommending the book to all secondary schools. It is through the generosity of John Hindmarsh Am and Rosanna Hindmarsh OAM and the National Gallery of Australia Foundation Board Publishing Fund that this highly popular exhibition catalogue has been re-printed for distribution to secondary schools across Australia. This initiative was also supported by Austral-ian state and territory education departments, who have generously underwritten the distribution of the book and accompanying resources. You will find enclosed with your school’s copy of Tom Roberts publication a secondary school curriculum-linked learning guide. Developed by the NGA’s Learning and Access Department, the resource is tailored to assist teachers in bringing Tom Roberts’ work to life for students through explicit curriculum links to mul-tiple subject areas as well as the cross-curricular priorities. I would be grateful if you could please alert relevant teachers as well as the school library to the arrival of this complimentary copy of the Tom Roberts catalogue for the benefit of your entire school. Yours Sincerely Gerard Vaughan AM Director. New Graphic Novel Books

Library remodelling The library has also undertaken the task or re-arranging equipment to allow for a designated Senior Study space and a full class size computer space within the library. This is a long process that will involve the movement of several areas and the installation of cabling, computers and new furniture. To date, the allocated Senior Study space has been cleaned out, and tables and chairs have moved in to allow that space to start and be useful to support senior student learning until the next phase of the remodelling starts. Please encourage your senior stu-

dents to make the most of the resources and spaces our library has to offer.

What’s new? On student request, we have started adding more graphic novels to our collection. Many of these have been arriv-ing over the last few weeks, so keep your eyes open for our new Graphic novel display going up soon, showcas-

ing our latest editions. If you can’t wait until then, here is a sneak peak of some of our new ones.

See photos on Page 8.

MESSAGE FROM BOSTES PRESIDENT

Parents may be aware that the HSC is going to be reformed. We are only just starting the process, so

its effect won’t occur for a few years. The BOSTES President has just released the following message

to clarify one aspect to both schools and parents.

Message from the BOSTES President

Literacy and Numeracy Standards

Since the announcement of the Stronger HSC Standards reforms two weeks ago, I have

received many messages of support and interest from schools and teachers.

I have also noticed some confusion about the minimum literacy and numeracy standard

for the award of the HSC. I hope that this explanation will help to clarify the standard.

From 2020, in order to be eligible for the HSC, students will be required to reach a min-

imum literacy and numeracy standard. The standard is set at the Australian Core Skills

Framework (ACSF) Level 3, which is a nationally agreed standard of functional literacy

and numeracy.

Students can demonstrate that they meet the standard by achieving either:

· a band 8 in each of their Year 9 NAPLAN reading, writing and numeracy tests, or

· a pass in the online literacy and numeracy test in Years 10, 11 or 12.

A band 8 NAPLAN result is not the literacy and numeracy standard. A Year 9

NAPLAN result below a band 8 will rather act as an early warning system to identify

students at risk of not meeting the standard. These students will then have time with

their teachers, parents and schools to work to improve their performance, before taking

the online literacy and numeracy test.

Students who do not demonstrate the standard during schooling will have five years af-

ter leaving school to meet the literacy and numeracy standard and receive an HSC.

Exemptions will be made for some students, such as those with disabilities undertaking

Life Skills courses, and students from non-English speaking backgrounds who have

been learning English for less than one year.

More information on the literacy and numeracy standard is available on the BOSTES

website. I have attached two documents that you may find useful, or wish to circulate to

your staff:

· Current State / Future State – Minimum Literacy Standard

· Stronger HSC Standards – Frequently Asked Questions.

Please forward this email on to your staff, particularly to your English and Mathematics

teachers. Thank you for your support of this important work.

Regards

Tom Alegounarias

President
