Week: 15th June 2020

Year 1 Topic Planning - Africa Choose 1 activity a day.

Africa Art

Be an impressionist artist

Tingatinga paintings are impressionist in

style reflecting the vibrant colours of

Africa. Can you draw or paint an animal

in this style?

Making a Meal Food Technology

Research, plan and help prepare a

meal from a country within Europe. Maybe you could create a restaurant at home, design and create a menu and lay the table to eat at your own

restaurant. I wonder if you will make some

traditional South African banana bread?

Be a Weathercaster

Science & Geography

Start off by locating the UK and Africa on a world map or globe. Remember to

look for the equator too. Research what the weather is like in Africa right now.

You can use this to help you https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/993800 Could you create a weather forecast of

your own comparing the weather in Africa to the weather here? Maybe you

could record it as a video.

Football DT

Many African schools do not

have money to buy sports equipment. They make their

own. Make your own football using

paper, material, string or wool.

Use it to play a game with your family.

Could you make a smaller ball and play tennis or handball?

Animals and their habitats Science

Are the animals that are common in

Africa the same animals that are common in the UK? What are they? Where do they live? Have they got

particular features to help them adapt to the environment they live in? You could record this however you like; create a

factfile, a powerpoint, a poster, a news article (written or recorded) or anything

else creative. Remember to look at different habitats such as Savannahs and

rivers.

Role Models

History & PSHE

Many people of African heritage have had a positive impact on making the world we live in today a better place.

We would like you to research an individual of your choice. You could

create a fact file or maybe even write them a letter? Or maybe you would

like to create a piece of writing to tell us or someone else in your family why

your chosen person is so inspiring.

Travel Agents Geography

Reopen your travel agency. This week

you have got a customer who is sure

that they want to travel to Africa, but

they aren’t sure what type of holiday

they would like. Will it be a Safari? A trip

to the beach? Sight-seeing, famous

landmarks? Or something else? Create a

selection of possible holiday

destinations and activities for your

customer to choose from.

Folk Tales PSHE

Find the moral in a story Anansi’s Pot of Wisdom is an

African folk tale about a character who tried to keep the wisdom of the world to

himself. What do you think Anansi

learnt from this tale, and why? https://www.youtube.com/

watch?v=PGFDEZM7T6Y What would you put into a pot

of wisdom?

Week: 15th June 2020

Learn about Nigeria Geography

Find out about Nigeria’s environment and culture, with an introduction to the

wider continent of Africa including South Africa and Kenya

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ articles/zk9tpg8

Play the first video, listen to what Uncle

Bob saw and complete activity 1 further

down the page.

Add to your flag bunting Geography & Art

Did you enjoy making your flags of Europe bunting last week? More than one flag is used across Africa - have a look at the different flags and what they are for. Choose some of your

favourites to add to your bunting. You could use mixed media to create them: bits of coloured card from

packaging, pens and any other spare materials you may have at home.

Patterns Art

Write your name in bubble writing. Traditionally African clothing has bright, bold patterns and of course the animals you can find in Africa have eye-catching patterns too. Could you decorate each

letter of your name with a different pattern?

Learning a language Languages & Music

There is lots of percussion and drumming in traditional African

music. Traditional songs also have a call and response (echo) could you learn a song? Could you also learn to say hello and

goodbye and count to 10 in Swahili?

Merging Art

Pick 2 African animals. Pick your favourite parts from each

animal and merge them into another animal.

This is now your animal – you need to draw it, colour it and name your animal.

Stories from different cultures https://www.youtube.com/

watch?v=ocnRQi89nK8 Handa’s Surprise.

The story is based in south-west

Kenya. Can you find this on a map? Can you find out more about the

country? How is it similar / different to where we live?

Run like a... PE

Can you find out how some animals in Africa move, then jump or run like

them? Maybe compare your human skills to these animals. Are you as fast as

a rhino, giraffe or a zebra?

Make a rain stick Music

Listen to African rain stick

sounds on YouTube. . Make your own using a kitchen roll

tube, clear tape, silver foil in a coil shape and rice, pasta or dried beans. Now compose

your own rain music.
