From the Principal’s desk…
I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter and
long weekend.
On Tuesday, a number of UCS teachers took
part in some professional learning with Dr
Michael Carr-Gregg around supporting
adolescent wellbeing. One worrying statistic
given was that 1 in 4 secondary students and 1
in 7 primary students have some form of
mental illness. It is very important that we
support our student’s mental wellbeing. One
way to support adolescent wellbeing is to help
build their resilience. There were a number of
resources recommended by Dr Michael Carr-
Gregg, including:
•Smiling mind app – free app about
mindfulness, managing stress and emotions,
being present; developed by a not-for-profit
organisation.
•Mood Gym – online self-help to practise
skills that prevent and manage symptoms of
depression and anxiety.
•The Brave Program – online program to
help prevent and treat anxiety; there are two
programs - one for children and one for teens
•ReachOut tool box – after a 2-question
quiz, apps are recommended for you
depending on your responses
•Good Thinking (book) by Sarah Edelman
and Louise Remond – about managing stress
and emotions
Congratulations to our primary boys AFL team

PSSA AFL KNOCKOUT
On Thursday, 29th March, the Primary Ungarie/Tullibigeal AFL team travelled to Parkes to compete in the final of the Western Region Knockout. Our players were full of confidence after playing well at West Wyalong a few weeks ago. We arrived at North Parkes Oval, and watched Dubbo South play Bathurst Public first up, with Bathurst sneaking a win in the last minute or so. This meant we had to play Bathurst in the final! Ungarie had a short warm-up game against a team of players who were trialling for the Western team. Ungarie didn't have to win this game.....but we did anyway! It was an ideal way to blow out some cobwebs and get ready for the big dance! The team had a short break, and then it was our turn to try to down Bathurst and become Western Champions. After a short pep-talk from Mr Cattle, the boys went to work, showing all that were there we meant business. We were playing 14 a side on a full field, so there was plenty of open spaces and lots of running involved. We didn't have any players on the bench, whereas Bathurst has about 6 to sub on and off. This fact didn't bother our players, with Ungarie landing two goals in the first half, with the score at half time being Ungarie 13 and Bathurst 0. As it was warm, and the fact we had no subs to call upon, Mr Cattle was pleased but concerned our players might run out of legs by the end of the game. He called for our team to win the second half, to show them how good Ungarie are! Our defense was amazing, with Bathurst getting more of the ball, but each attacking raid was diffused over and over again. The final whistle sounded, and Ungarie (with some help from 3 Tulli boys!) became 2018 Western Champions!!! The final score was 13 - 1, which is an amazing effort from 14 students from very small schools competing against large schools. The team showed resilience, critical thinking and accountability, all of which are our 'habits' we are striving to develop at UCS. It was a proud day to be associated with UCS, a day that those kids will remember for quite some time. We now have to play the winner of Inverell and Gunnedah, who are playing off to become champions of North West region. This will be played late in Term 2. Well done boys!!

GARDEN WORKING BEE
SATURDAY 14TH APRIL 2018
COMMENCING @ 9.00AM
Our garden beds have survived summer remarkably well, but to set them up
for winter, they need a good feed of sheep manure, and to have
more mulch added.
A keen local gardener has propagated several euonymus shrubs
(the yellow & green ones) that are ready to be transplanted.
Also, with ANZAC Day approaching, it would be a good time to prepare
R.S.L Park (in Ungarie St) for the ANZAC ceremonies.
All our keen gardeners are asked to meet in the main street near the
C.W.A. Rooms. Remember to bring a hat & water.
