• This teacher led activity aims to reinforce the ‘-ness’ and the ‘-ment’ suffixes which are used to construct abstract nouns.

• The children are asked to add the appropriate suffix, depending on the stem word in the sentence being a verb or an adjective.

They will see that they choose ‘-ness’ if the stem word in the sentence is an adjective e.g.

illness or ‘-ment’ if the stem word in the sentence is a verb e.g.

treatment

• The children’s task is to choose the correct suffix to make the word match the meaning they want for the slide.

• The next 2 slides are an answer sheet for each child to go alongside the IT presentation and should be printed out and given to the children before you start. Children should write in their choice of prefix or suffix on the answer sheet after each slide is shown.

• They then discuss their choice of suffix with the teacher when asked to give their reasons. After discussion they receive correct feedback on screen.
