FDA Scrutinizes Safety of Hand SanitizersTuesday, July 05, 2016The Food and Drug Administration has asked manufacturers of hand sanitizers to provide additional proof that their germ cleansers are safe and effective. Despite the review, industry suppliers of antibacterial products stand by their hand sanitizers and feel the review will have little effect on the sale of this increasingly popular item.The review is the latest in a series of similar moves by the FDA, which previously initiated a deeper evaluation of consumer soaps with hand-sanitizing properties (of which a final determination is expected to be released soon) and health-care antiseptics. The FDA says it does not believe these products are ineffective or unsafe, but wants to ensure that “unknown safety and efficacy concerns” aren’t present due to the heightened use of these products multiple times a day in environments that present a low threat of infection. Communicating with children and youth can be tricky at times. Listening and talking is the key to a healthy connection between you and your children.

The first thing is to be available when your child seems eager to share information with you.

Start the conversation; it lets them know you care about what is going on in their lives. To show your child you are listening, use good eye contact and focus on their feelings rather than your own during the conversation.

Let them complete their point before you respond. It may be difficult at first, but resist arguing about who is right. Let them know it is ok to disagree. Try to express your opinion without putting down theirs.

The next time you have an opportunity to engage your child in a good conversation, try some of these ideas to make this time enjoyable for you and your children. Remember, you are the role model for their communication skills as adults later in their journey.

Yellow Summer Squash Casserole

Ingredients2 Yellow squash/yellow zucchini, peeled and sliced

1 Tablespoon olive oil

1 Onion, peeled and diced

2 Cloves garlic, peeled and minced

1 Egg

1/2 Cup panko breadcrumbs

1/2 Cup milk

1 Cup shredded cheddar cheese (Gruyere would work nicely, too)

2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

Add the olive oil and onions to a large skillet and sauté on medium heat for a

few minutes until the onions have softened. Add the garlic and cook for another

minute. Stir in the squash and continue cooking for about 5 to 7 minutes until the

squash has softened slightly. It doesn’t need to be cooked all the way through.

Season to taste and allow to cool slightly.

In a bowl, combine the bread crumbs and shredded cheese. In a separate bowl,

beat together the egg and milk and mix in half the crumb/cheese mixture. Add the

cooked squash and onion to the egg mixture and transfer to a casserole dish. Top

with the remaining crumb/cheese mixture and pour on the melted butter. Bake in

a pre-heated 400 degree oven for 20 - 30 minutes or until the top is a light golden

brown. Makes approximately 4 servings.
