Faith without Works is Dead

How do we know we have a faith that is vibrant and alive?

How do we know we possess a faith that makes a difference? How

do we know we have true religion?

James addresses this issue in 2:14-26. Faith expresses itself

in works/deeds. We are not saved by our works, rather, James

emphasizes we are saved for our works.

The faith/works issue in James is different from Paul’s faith/

works discussion. In Galatians, Paul deals with “works/

performance” of the old law rituals. He maintains they cannot save.

And, they are not necessary now because of Christ’s salvific work at

the cross.

In James, the author deals with how our Christian deeds are

a wonderful expression of our faith. This is an expansion of what we

already saw in chapter 1—taking care of the widows and orphans.

This is true religion.

Martin Luther, as it is well known, had problems with the

book of James. He felt that it emphasized works too much, and that

it did not say much about Jesus. Consequently, he preferred not to

use it, and even felt like it did not need to be in the canon, calling it

a “strawy epistle” (i.e., not having much value like piece of straw!).

But we know that belief alone is not true religion. This is the

very point that James is going to make. In fact, he points out, the

demons also believe. But they tremble (presumably because they

know their eternal destiny and outcome based on the fact that

their belief did not result in obedience to the will of God).

Our faithful expressions of caring (deeds) are a beautiful

thing to see when coupled with belief. When our belief in God is

the basis of our Christian works, we do so with humility and love.

Belief is the motivation of our deeds. The royal law is the

motivation of our works.

Remember: “As the body without the spirit is dead,

so faith without deeds is dead.”
