PRELUDE

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

who calls us into an everlasting hope,

who guides us to springs of the water of life,

who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom.

Amen.

One with the communion of saints in all times and places,

let us confess our sin against God and one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

O God, our merciful redeemer,

we confess the ways we live only for ourselves.

We fail to see you in our neighbor’s face.

We turn our ears from voices that cry out.

We pass by the hungry and the oppressed.

In your great mercy,

forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you,

and for ☩ his sake, God forgives you all your sin.

Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God.

Amen.

LITANY OF THANKSGIVING

We praise and thank our God

for all that we have been given!

We praise and thank our God

for earth and oceans, rain and sun, for food and homes.

We praise and thank our God

for the blessings of life and faith and hope.

We praise and thank our God

for the Creator who made us, the Christ who saved us,

and the Counselor who guides us.

We praise and thank our God

for family and friends, for neighbors and coworkers.

We praise and thank our God

for God has blessed us beyond all expectations.

We praise and thank our God

for all blessings which compel us to reach out to those with less,

to be of service to any in need, to keep company with the unwelcome,

to seek peace and make friends of our enemies.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

Lord God, you have enriched us, saved us, loved us.

Open our hearts and minds to your will

that we may be free to share everything we have,

to give away whatever holds us hostage in spirit,

that we may always know that possessions are just that:

things, lovely to have,

but in the end only good for the good they can do in this world.

Keep us always in that work, the work of Christ and Christ's kingdom,

the kingdom of God. Amen.

FIRST READING Deuteronomy 8:7-18 7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with

flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys

and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and

pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land where you may eat

bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are

iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. 10You shall eat your fill

and bless the LORD your God for the good land that he has given you.

Page 6: Wednesday, November 22, 2017 Thanksgiving Eveimmanuellutheranccmd.org/wp-content/uploads/bulletins/2017.11.22 Bulletin.pdfNov 22, 2017  · 6 11 Take care that you do not forget the

11Take care that you do not forget the LORD your God, by failing to keep

his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am

commanding you today. 12When you have eaten your fill and have built fine

houses and live in them, 13and when your herds and flocks have multiplied,

and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, 14then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the LORD your God, who brought

you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15who led you

through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous

snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, 16and fed

you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to

humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. 17Do not say to

yourself, “My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this

wealth.” 18But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you

power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to

your ancestors, as he is doing today.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 65:1-4, 9-13 1You are to be praised, O God, in Zion; to you shall vows be fulfilled. 2To you, the one who answers prayer, to you all flesh shall come.

3Our sins are stronger than we are, but you blot out our transgressions. 4Happy are they whom you choose

and draw to your courts to dwell there!

They will be satisfied by the beauty of your house,

by the holiness of your temple.

9You visit the earth and water it abundantly; you make it very plenteous;

the river of God is full of water.

You prepare the grain, for so you provide for the earth. 10You drench the furrows and smooth out the ridges;

with heavy rain you soften the ground and bless its increase.

11You crown the year with your goodness,

and your paths overflow with plenty. 12May the fields of the wilderness be rich for grazing,

and the hills be clothed with joy.

13May the meadows cover themselves with flocks, and the valleys cloak

themselves with grain; let them shout for joy and sing.

SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 9:6-15 6The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and

the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7Each of you must

give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion,

for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to provide you with every

blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you

may share abundantly in every good work. 9As it is written, “He scatters

abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and

multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your

righteousness. 11You will be enriched in every way for your great

generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; 12for the

rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also

overflows with many thanksgivings to God. 13Through the testing of this

ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel

of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all

others, 14while they long for you and pray for you because of the

surpassing grace of God that he has given you. 15Thanks be to God for his

indescribable gift! The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL Luke 17:11-19

The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 11On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between

Samaria and Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him.

Keeping their distance, 13they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have

mercy on us!” 14When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show

yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. 15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising

God with a loud voice. 16He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked

him. And he was a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made

clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found to

return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19Then he said to him,

“Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S MESSAGE

SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY “For the Beauty of the Earth” ELW #879

CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Welcoming God’s reign of righteousness and mercy,

let us pray with people of every time and place. A brief silence.

Holy God, you invite us to share abundantly in every good work.

As congregations join together in worship, make us bold in our generosity

so that all may be fed. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

On this Day of Thanksgiving, you crown the year with your goodness in

creation. Supply seed to the sower, bread for food, and a shared harvest for

all. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lift up First Nations, native peoples, and indigenous tribes who live in

many places all across the world. Support those who teach and preserve our

many cultures that they may be understood as reflections of your diverse

creation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Put an end to poverty, homelessness, and hunger. Fill our tables with

healthy food. We pray for those who are lonely, stressed, and sick

especially those on our prayer list. Surround them with your presence and

care. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Open our hearts to be cheerful givers, sharing abundantly in your good

work. Teach us to give thanks to you for every blessing and work of healing

in our lives. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Here other intercessions may be offered.

Comfort all who grieve with the assurance of hope that all who have died

will be raised with Christ. We remember and honor those whose witness of

the faith echoes beyond the grave. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Receive these prayers and the hopes and concerns of our hearts,

O God, as we entrust into your loving care all for whom we pray,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

OFFERTORY PRAYER

Creator God, you made everything, and you provide for every need.

The bread we break and the wine we pour come from you. As we eat

and drink with thanksgiving, fill us with your love; let that love flow

through us to others; and join us to the saints before us in a holy and

boundless communion; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DIALOGUE

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

Holy God, our Bread of life, our Table, and our Food,

you created a world in which all might be satisfied by your abundance.

You dined with Abraham and Sarah, promising them life.

You fed your people Israel with manna from heaven.

You sent your Son to eat with sinners and to become food for the world.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave

thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat;

this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink,

saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all

people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his life given for us and his rising from the grave,

we await his coming again to share with us the everlasting feast.

By your Spirit nurture and sustain us with this meal: strengthen us to serve

all in hunger and want,

and by this bread and cup make of us the body of your Son.

Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy

Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen.
