Music Show, Meeznah Staying in Training... Jaber Abdullah's G1 Falmouth S. victress MusicShow (Ire) (Noverre) will continue racing as a four-year-old in 2011, it was announced yesterday. AMusic Showstays in training, and will be campaigned from a mile upto a mile-and-a-quarter,@ confirmed the owner's racingmanager Bruce Raymond. AShe showed a great turn offoot to win the Falmouth S., in which they went a truegallop, and she is best suited by a strong pace. I thinkshe is sure to stay a mile and a quarter, and it could bethat she actually finds some improvement for goingfurther. She is certainly a very high-class filly who, hopefully, can enjoy another successful season." It was also announced yesterday that Saif Ali andSaeed Altayer's G1 Epsom Oaks runner-up Meeznah(Dynaformer), who also ran fourth in both the G1 IrishOaks and the G1 Yorkshire Oaks, is to stay in training. The David Lanigan trainee, who has yet to experienceblack-type success, will be campaigned at staying dis-tances next term, according to connections. BruceRaymond, speaking on behalf of the owners, com-mented, "Meeznah ran a fine race at Epsom and, for amoment, I thought she was going to win. They hadgone fast early in the race, and down the home straightshe was still on the bridle, while the others were beingpushed along. Snow Fairy ended up a worthy winner, but Meeznah showed really good staying qualities thatday, with the strong pace playing to her strengths. While she has run a lot of really good races, she hasjust a maiden win to her name, so it is really importantto get her head in front again. At Doncaster, [whenthird] in the [G2] Park Hill [S.], she showed she gets 15furlongs, so, hopefully, there will be a nice staying prizefor her in 2011."

TAPIT STUD FEE INCREASED TO $80K GISW Tapit (Pulpit--Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled) will

Sunny Despite the Rain... It was cold and grey in Lexington Tuesday, but thesale of Funny Sunny energized the Keeneland sale pavil-ion. Bred by Highclere in Kentucky, Funny Sunny was

hammered down to WinStar Farmfor $60,000 at the Fasig-TiptonCalder Sale earlier in the year afterbreezing a quarter in :21 4/5. Thefilly=s sire, Sharp Humor, stands atWinStar. Sent to trainer RichardBudge, Funny Sunny debuted go-ing six furlongs at Hoosier ParkOct. 13 and made a favorable im-pression, rallying clear to a 2 1/4-length decision. AHer first race was very impres-sive,@ said Chris Brothers. AShe ranaway from the field, and that=swhat you want to see first timeout.@

Added Pope, AShe was on the outside and got hungwide around the turn, and had no clue what she wasdoing, but then figured it out and said, >Oh, I=m sup-posed to be a racehorse.= And she just took off andpassed them.@ At WinStar=s inaugural under-tack showcase Nov. 2,Funny Sunny breezed four furlongs in :48 4/5 (3:40mark of video). Pope laughed that Kentucky=s tax laws played thedeciding factor in where Funny Sunny will now go. AWethought about sending her to Churchill Downs, butafter realizing I'd have to pay six-percent sales tax [ifshe stayed in Kentucky], we'll send her to Florida andprobably have her ready to run at Gulfstream,@ she said. Pope got into breeding and racing in the early 1980s,but has stepped up her involvement markedly in recentyears. She=s been active at the yearling and bloodstocksales, typically for nicely bred fillies and mares, but thisyear expanded the scope of Whisper Hill, buying someyearling colts to pinhook. Cont. p5

Keeneland November Cont. from p4

AIt=s going well,@ she said of the venture. AWe boughtfour colts--two Speightstowns, a Grand Slam andStreet Sense. They=ve been nominated to the Fasig-Tipton Sale and the OBS March Sale, and we=ll probablyhave two go to one, and two to the other. We alsohave a few fillies. We=ll sift through them and go to alater sale, either Keeneland April or OBS April. I don=tlike to push the fillies, so we=ll take our time withthem.@ Pope currently has a broodmare band of about 20.She boards them in Kentucky at Wayne Sweezy's Tim-ber Town farm, as well as at Fares Farm and GunstonHall. AWe just don=t have the stallions in Florida,@ she ex-plained. AWe=ve been breeding to Bernardini, DistortedHumor...so they have to be up here. I used to ship backand forth a lot, but I think the shipping stresses them, and the change in environment stresses them. I=m try-ing to do what=s best for the mare.@ And while Whisper Hill has been primarily a breed-to-sell operation, Pope said she plans to enjoy racing, too. AI=d definitely like to keep some of the fillies [andrace],@ she said. AI=ve been working really hard on thefarm, and I want to get out and enjoy going to theraces.@ Hopefully, Funny Sunny provides plenty of enjoymentfor Pope and Co. in 2011.

Whitham Buys Out WinStar on Bayakoa Kin... Janis Whitham, who campaigned the great Bayakoa(Arg) to a pair of GI Breeders= Cup Distaff victories in1989 and >90, bought out partner WinStar Farm on agreat-granddaughter of the famed racemare yesterday.

The three-year-oldfilly Tabby, by StormCat out of the first-class Affluent (Af-firmed), was knockeddown to Whithamadvisor Frank Pennfor $200,000.WinStar, which co-bred the filly withWhitham, consignedTabby as hip 3014.Trained by Ian Wilkesthis season, Tabby

broke her maiden in her turf debut sprinting 5 1/2 pan-els at Ellis Park Aug. 13 and recently ran sixth inKeeneland NW1X Oct. 22. Penn said Tabby will nowhead to the broodmare shed. AThe Whitham family did a foal share with WinStar, and Tabby was the result of that,@ Penn explained. AWedecided that when her racing career was done, we=dput her back through the sales, and that way everybodywould have a shot at her.@

Penn, reached by phone in the late afternoon, saidthe filly was on a van at that moment, heading towardhis Pennbrook Farm. The Whithams currently have 12mares at Pennbrook, according to Penn. AThey enjoythe game, and they breed torace,@ he added. Whitham, 78,bred and raced Affluent, a foalof 1998 who banked nearly$1.5 million. Affluent won theGI Queen Elizabeth II ChallengeCup S. going nine furlongs onthe grass here at Keeneland inOctober of 2001, then, in hervery next start, rallied from 14lengths back to capture theseven-furlong GI La Brea S.over Santa Antia=s dirt track inDecember. Bayakoa was a two-time champion who won 12 Grade I races in the U.S.and banked over $2.7 million. She died in 1997.Whitham=s longtime trainer Ron McAnally, conditionedboth Bayakoa and Affluent. This term, horses to carryWhitham=s silks include Ivory Empress (Seeking theGold), runner-up in the GIII Endine S. at Delaware inSeptember and most recently second in a Churchillallowance last Friday. Wilkes trains Ivory Empress.

Hulse Keeps His Humor, Lands SW Colt... T K Stable=s Kevin Hulse flew in from Nebraska onMonday with the express purpose of buying twohorses, both juveniles by Sharp Humor from theWinStar draft. He was thwarted on the first, thesession-topping Funny Sunny, who soared past hisappraisal. That left Hulse with a case of the nerves asthe second, the undefeated stakes winner Glint (SharpHumor--Glimmer, by Deputy Minister), came into thering later in the day as hip 3326. "I figured [Glint would] bring between $250,000 and$350,000, but...I was on the other Sharp Humor ear-lier, and she brought $380,000. I didn't think she'dbring $150,000!@ laughed Hulse. AI thought, 'Whoa! Ibetter go see how big the checkbook is!'@ Big enough, as it turned out. Hulse, a relatively newface on the scene, proved gamest for Glint, and landedthe colt for $340,000. That was the second-highestprice for a horse yesterday. AHe's the real deal,@ said Hulse, wearing a Harley-Davidson jacket and doing his bidding out back. AIt isn'tmuch more of a risk coming here and spending$350,000 for him, or giving a $100,000 for a yearling. We know he can race. I've had yearling [purchases]that you need a search warrant to find. The risk factorisn't as bad. This will be a good experience; this will befun.@ Bred by WinStar, Glint was sent through theKeeneland September Sale 14 months ago, but wasbought back for $32,000. That proved the right deci-sion. Glint outclassed the competition in his debut, romping by over nine lengths at Hoosier Sept. 1, thenpowered clear to a three-length win in the Fitz Dixon Jr.Memorial Juvenile S. at Presque Isle Sept. 25. Glint hada chip removed from his ankle following the race. AIt was a really small chip--it was less than a millime-ter--but they thought, as good as he is, if you get tocampaigning him hard next year, it would be sad inApril to find out you needed to remove it,@ Hulse rea-soned. AIt was kind of a preventative thing. I had threedifferent vets look at it, and he's really good; he's re-covered well.@ Glint=s second dam is MGSW Recognizable (SeattleSlew), a three-parts sister to GISW Awe Inspiring (SlewO= Gold). Based in Grand Island, Nebraska, Hulse operates T K Stable with his wife, Tammie. "That=s how you getT K Stable,@ said Hulse. ASomehow, she got her namein front of mine. Usually, we come tothe Keeneland [September] yearling Sale. I bought aMedaglia d'Oro filly this year. We want to try to keepsome here, and then have some in Nebraska, Iowa andOklahoma. Star of the Show... With the top five lots and 15 of the top 20 sellingfrom WinStar=s draft of racing prospects, it wasn=t hardto figure the fuel driving Tuesday=s strong ninth sessionat Keeneland November. WinStar=s Elliott Walden wason hand all day to keep track of the consignment, andproclaimed himself satisfied at selling=s end. AThe twoSharp Humors were our two best, and we weren=tsurprised they were the two highest prices,@ saidWalden. AThey had good form at two, and everybodywants to have a good two-year-old. Funny Sunny wonher only start, and Glint won both of his starts, and itwas something that was very appealing to buyers.@Walden said that all indicators pointed to a strong dayof trading. AWe had over 900 shows [Monday] with 40horses, which means each horse averaged over 20shows,@ he said. AIt was very active, and the closer thehorse is to the races, the more comfortable people feelspending money right now. The market=s still a littletenuous, but I couldn=t be happier.@ Many members ofthe WinStar consignment were shown during an under-tack preview at the farm Nov. 2, and Walden thought itmade a big difference come sale day. AI thought ithelped a lot,@ he said. AI know Funny Sunny workedextremely well that day, and the 25 or 30 people whowere there were very impressed.@ Keeneland officialsapplauded WinStar for its efforts. AThe market todayreflected the quality of offerings from WinStar racing,@said Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. AThey produceda quality draft of horses with very few withdrawals. They showed the horses very professionally, they mar-keted the horses very professionally, and I think theygot a full return on that investment. "He is a big, strong horse, a lovely mover with agood pedigree, and was my top pick of the sale,@ Leungoffered. AHe's a precocious type, so we'll be looking totake him up to Hong Kong straight away and target thegriffin races in May and June." He added, AOn average, the quality this year is pretty good, with the biggercatalogue offering more choice than usual. The sale isstronger than I expected, but with the exchange rate, itis still good value compared to Europe and Australia, which is why we're buying more here."Cont. p12

NZ Ready to Run Sale Cont.

With 250 horses catalogued during the first of twosessions, 125 were sold for an aggregate ofNZ$6,593,000. This represents a current average ofNZ$52,744 and a median of NZ$32,000. The clearancerate is currently 56 percent. With 18 horses alreadysold for six-figure sums, there appears to be strength atthe top of the market, but the middle and lower end ofthe market are facing a bigger challenge. AWe have a much bigger catalogue this year, 200horses more than last year, and while that's offeredbuyers a broader selection, we knew it was going tomake it very difficult to sustain last year's figures,"commented NZB Co-Managing Director Petrea Vela."But even given that, today's clearance rate is disap-pointing, and reflects a patchy middle to lower market. The international buying bench has been as robust asever, but the domestic market is very quiet, which is ofconcern. New Zealand buyers spent more than NZ$3million at the one-day sale last year, and it's barely afraction of that today (NZ$1.2 million). Hopefully, wecan see some improvement on that tomorrow." A broad international buying bench has seen buyersfrom Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Malaysiaand Korea all represented on the buyers' sheet on thefirst day. Heading the list is Magus Equine with threeother purchases made during the day, including theNZ$220,000 paid for the Darci Brahma colt from Group3-winning Pins (Aus) mare Rosetti Bay (NZ) as lot 20.Making the biggest impact on the results sheet is Singa-pore, with a total of 27 horses purchased for racingthere. Amongst the most prominent Singapore buyersare Laurie Laxon, Michael Freedman, Dr. K.C. Tan andSoon Hock Lee. Also active are both the Seoul Race-horse Owners Association and the Korean Racing Au-thority, with 14 two-year-olds purchased for Korea sofar. Selling two of the top five lots, Mark and ShelleyTreweek's Lyndhurst Farm is on track to be the leadingvendor for the fourth year in a row. Their five entriessold thus far for brought an aggregate of NZ$770,000and an average of NZ$128,333. Lyndhurst has another13 young horses catalogued for sale tomorrow. NEW JERSEY PANEL MAKES OMINOUSRECOMMENDATIONS A New Jersey advisory com-mission, charged with recommending a Anew self-sus-taining course for the horse racing industry@ in thestate, has suggested the closing of the Meadowlandsand consolidating all racing operations at MonmouthPark. It also recommends that the two tracks and/orracetrack properties be sold for operation by the privatesector. Despite the success of its 50-day elite meeting,Monmouth Park will post a loss of $6.6 million, whilethe Meadowlands Racetrack is estimated to lose anadditional $11 million. ANeither the New Jersey Sportsand Exposition Authority, nor the taxpayers of NewJersey, have the wherewhithal to support two money-losing racetrack operations,@ the report states. In whatthe commission calls a Adirect and difficult solution,@ itrecommends 59 live Thoroughbred dates at MonmouthPark from May to September, following the successfulmodel of the summer of 2010. The track would host 30days of Standardbred racing in the fall of 2010 and 70days in subsequent years. The commission, in an at-tempt to Apreserve the heritage of the Hambletonian@recommends a six-day Asuper@ meet at the Meadow-lands in August 2011. These changes would require acapital investment of approximately $4.6 million atMonmouth Park for Standardbred racing, including theinstallation of lights, a changeover from the Thorough-bred to the Standardbred racing surface, a receivingbarn and a partial winterization of a portion of thegrandstand. The commission also floated the idea ofexpanding the network of off-track betting facilities inthe state, even as it suggested selling the WoodbridgeOTB. The Meadowlands would be converted into anOTB exclusively, one which the Hanson Commissionfeels could be the most profitable in North America.Officials at the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen=sAssociation are said to be in the process of schedulinga meeting of its board to discuss recent developments. For the complete Hanson Commission report, click here.
