Learner Profile – Caring
Enter the classroom silently and find your seat.
1. Take out pencils, HAWK card, and agenda
2. Everything else gets put by the back wall
3. Write down homework (Finish guided notes packet. Read and complete textbook section 4.1 (pages 130-141). Bring textbook next class) in your agenda.

1. How does Carbon Dioxide leave the atmosphere?
2. What are the three fossil fuels from the video?
3. What happens when fossil fuels are burned?
4. How much has the Carbon Dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere increased by since 1750?

Energy Resource Experts
• Today we are going to learn about four different types of energy resources.
• You’re going to have the opportunity to become an expert at one of
those energy resources. • Every needs to number
off into 4’s.
5 min
Energy Resource Experts
• All of the 1’s will become experts on Coal.
• All of the 2’s will become experts on Natural Gas.
• All of the 3’s will become experts on Oil/Petroleum.
• All of the 4’s will become experts on Nuclear Energy.
5 min
Energy Resource Experts
• To become an expert, you need to know the advantages and the disadvantages of your energy resource.
• You will have 5 minutes to research both the advantages and disadvantages and write them down in your guided notes.

Expert Gathering
• Now that you’ve become an expert, you need to meet with other experts on your energy resource to make sure you have the same advantages and disadvantages.
• All of the 1’s will meet in one corner, the 2’s in another, etc.
7 min
Expert Gathering
• You have 2 minutes to compare and finalize your advantages/disadvantages list.
• I have to sign off on the list when you are finished to make sure that you did not miss anything.
2 min
Expert Gathering• You have 5 minutes to take your
final advantages/disadvantages list and write it on a piece of chart paper.
• Your list will be responsible for teaching others about your energy resource when they perform a gallery walk.
• You also need to create at least TWO critical thinking questions about your resource
• I have written a question for each to get you started
• Information is important – not how “pretty” your poster is

Gallery Walk
• There is now one poster for each one of the four nonrenewable energy resource.
• Although you have become an expert on one, you must know the advantages/disadvantages of all of them.
• You will perform a gallery walk to learn about the other 3.
10 min
Gallery Walk
• At each poster, you will have 1 minute and 30 seconds to write down the advantages/disadvantages.
– Voice level 0!
• Then you will talk with your group for 30 seconds to answer the critical thinking question at the bottom of your poser.
– Voice level 1
• You will then rotate at a voice level 0.

Nonrenewable Resources
“Try to leave the Earth a better place than when you arrived.”
– Sidney Sheldon
In general…
• There are many energy resources we use for electricity, heat, etc.
• Nonrenewable resources are those that we use more quickly than they are reproduced. This means that someday, we will run out of these resources.
• Some of these resources are fossil fuels which were created from the remains of plants and animals from millions of years ago.
• The other resource, nuclear energy, is created from nuclear fission where the atoms of the element Uranium are split and produces electricity.
In general…
• While these resources are cheap, readily available, and most wide spread, they are harsh on our environment.
• Burning fossil fuels releases CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) into the atmosphere which contributes to the warming of our Earth (global warming).
• Nuclear energy does not cause this same pollution. However, nuclear power plants are expensive to build, and, if not disposed of properly, nuclear waste is highly radioactive and dangerous to humans.
In your own words, what is a fossil fuel?
Stop and Jot
Watch out!
• Although nuclear energy is nonrenewable, it is not a fossil fuel!
• It is nonrenewable because it uses the element Uranium which is a nonrenewable resource.
What influences will burning fossil fuels and using nonrenewable resources have on our environment
in the long run?
