In one year Pullmanturbrought more cruise passen-gers to Aruba than they havein 4 years!

During the welcome cere-mony of the first call of theMonarch vessel, the ArubaMinister of Tourism re-marked about Aruba's longsuccessful history with RoyalCaribbean. He remindedabout the discussions aboutthe possibility to bring newships to Aruba especially dur-ing or so-called low seasons. This, according to the Minis-

ter was followed by the goodnews from Pullmantur thatthey will be calling on Arubaduring the entire year, as wellas into the next year!

The Minister of Tourismproudly announced to thegroup of visitors and ship ex-ecutives that..."you will bepart of the history of Aruba, because for the first time wewill pass the 700 thousandthcruise passenger to visitAruba. We want to thank youfor your business, and alsofor the opportunity to open

doors to the world." The Min-ister expressed praise andgratitude to the Pullmanturgroup, ATA, APA andMaduro & Son for the oppor-tunity to mark the beginningof our low 'high; cruisetourism season.

All invitees, to includeATA CEO Ronella TjinAsjoe-Croes and representa-tives of APA and Maduro &Son received a royal tour ofthe vessel. Commercial Di-rector of Pullmantur for LatinAmerica, Jose Manuel Mar-

tin reported that for this par-ticular cruise they broughttravel agents and Latin Amer-ican and European reportersso that they can become ac-quainted with these destina-tions including Aruba. JoseManuel Martin has beencoming to the Caribbeanhimself for the past 22 years.

According to ManuelMartin more than 130 thou-sand persons have visited ourisland via Pullmantur duringthe past four seasons. Theyexpect to see some 180 pas-

sengers to get on boardMonarch from Aruba on aweekly basis of a total of 52calls. This, he claims will bein addition to the 2600 pas-sengers who will be visitingAruba weekly during theyear. This means that in a sin-gle season a total of 140 thou-sand persons will visit ourisland.

Following the discoursesthey exchanged gifts. Laterthe ship invited all to enjoytypical Aruban dance per-formances by The SuperDancers.

As of April 2013, this shipcarries some 2.744 passen-gers. Her name was changedto Monarch and is beingmanaged by a Spanish oper-ative which operates theRoyal Caribbean Cruise Line, namely, Pullmantur Cruises. On April 29th the ship sailedinto our harbor under rhyth-mic steel pan music.

Pullmantur is implement-ing the practice of interport-ing in our region - theSouthern Caribbean region. This practice is contrary tothe turn-around where thecruise line brings passengersto board at a destination andreturns them to the same des-tination to then board an air-line. Pullmantur is nowoffering passengers the op-portunity to chose multipleembarcation ports for theirnew port calls.

These itinerary interportsare: Aruba, La Guaira, Cura-cao, Colon and Cartagena deIndias. On this voyage pas-

sengers could have chosenany one of these ports toboard the ship for an 8 dayand 7 night voyage accrossthe Southern Caribbean.

This practice was histori-cally used by Europeancruise lines and is slowly be-coming popular now in the

Caribbean region. RoyalCaribbean Cruise Lines, themother company of Pullman-tur has similar practices forother ports and other vesselswith the objective of attract-ing clients from the SouthernCaribbean.

The two top diplomats wereto meet for the second time ina week late Tuesday on thesidelines of talks on the Arcticin Sweden, as they grope for asolution based on a deal agreedin June last year in Geneva.

Exactly who will attendthe conference, where it willbe held and when, has yet tobe determined, State Depart-ment spokesman Patrick Ven-trell said.

Kerry warned earlier how-ever in a press conference inStockholm that if Assadmakes another "gross miscal-culation" and decides not toattend then it was "clear theopposition will be receiving

additional support."There has been a flurry of

diplomatic activity sinceKerry's Moscow talks lastweek, with foreign ministersbeating a path to the Russiancapital to discuss the conflictin which an estimated 94,000people have now died.

However, Syrian Informa-tion Minister Omran al-Zohbi told the Hezbollah'sAl-Manar television thatDamascus wanted more de-tails of the proposal beforedeciding whether to attend, saying Assad's departure wasnot up for discussion.

Caracas (AFP) - A renowned journalist critical of Venezuela'sgovernment turned down an offer to head the GlobovisionTV channel on Tuesday after the lone opposition networkwas sold amid doubts about its future editorial line.

Vladimir Villegas, who held top government jobs in thegovernment of late president Hugo Chavez before becomingone of its critics, said he could not resolve differences withthe news channel over conditions that "were not in tune withmy role as a journalist."

"The journalism that I dream about is free, autonomous,"Villegas said on Union Radio, a station in which he managesa program.

Globovision has been on the air since 1994 and has facedgovernment fines, but the Zuloaga family sold it off and thenew management said the channel's editorial line would veerto the center.

The channel was bought by Juan Domingo Cordero, a for-mer president of the Caracas stock exchange, and two busi-nessmen with no media experience, Raul Gorrin and GustavoPerdomo.

Villegas had been named as a co-director along withLeopoldo Castillo, one of Globovision's star journalists. Aformer diplomat and deputy minister under Chavez, he is thebrother of Information Minister Ernesto Villegas.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -Giant retailer Walmart an-nounced Tuesday that itwould conduct in-depthsafety inspections of all 279of its Bangladesh suppliers,in the wake of the buildingcollapse that killed more than1,100 people.

The US retailer said itwould release publicly thenames and inspection infor-mation on each of the facto-ries, and meanwhile alsoissued a list of more than 200factories that are blacklistedfor failing to meet its stan-dards for suppliers.

"The company will imme-diately order its productionstopped at facilities where ur-gent safety issues are identi-fied, notify the factory ownerand government authoritiesof the need to take action, andrequire remediation," Wal-mart said in a statement.

"As a result, workers inthese facilities can be assuredof safer working conditions, and the entire market will belifted to a new standard."

The company did not say

however if it would join aprotocol agreed by a numberof other major buyers ofclothes made in Bangladesh, the "Accord on Fire andBuilding Safety" endorsed byBenetton, Mango, Marks &Spencer, Inditex and H&M.

The action comes in thewake of the April 24 collapseof a nine-story building out-side Dhaka housing multiplegarment factories, includingsome which reportedly sup-plied Walmart, killing 1,127in the worst disaster ever inthe global textile industry.

In November 111 workerswere killed in a fire at a gar-ment factory in Bangladeshthat also supplied Walmart, among other global names inthe clothing industry.

NEW YORK (AFP) - Thetweaked version of Mi-crosoft's operating systemnicknamed Windows Bluewill be previewed on June 26and will be a free update forusers as Windows 8.1, thecompany said Tuesday.

The update comes amid alukewarm reception for Win-dows 8, an operating systemreleased last year to help thesoftware giant transition frompersonal computers to tabletsand other mobile devices.

The move is part of a goal"of delivering continual up-dates to create a richer expe-rience for Windowscustomers," a Microsoft blog

LeBlanc said a public pre-view of Windows 8.1 will beavailable starting on June 26,timed with the Microsoft de-veloper conference in SanFrancisco.

Microsoft said recently ithad sold than 100 million li-censes for Windows 8 butthat the update was plannedafter listening to customers.

Some analysts say Mi-crosoft was forced to act be-cause of slow adoption ofWindows 8, which madesome radical changes to thedesign of the desktop.

With Windows 8, Mi-crosoft was trying to create asystem that could be used onmobile touch screen deviceswhile also serving the usersof traditional PCs.

Microsoft launched Win-dows 8 last October, revamp-ing its flagship system in aneffort to make inroads in thefast-growing mobile seg-ment. At the same time, itlaunched its Surface tabletcomputer.

NEW DELH (AFP) - Indianscientists Tuesday announced alow-cost vaccine against adeadly diarrhoea-causing virusthat kills some 100,000 childrenin th country every year.

Rotavirus, which causes se-vere diarrhoea, is globally re-sponsible for some 453,000deaths annually and is particu-larly dangerous in the develop-ing world where swift healthcare is often out of reach.

K. Vijaraghavan, secretaryof India's Department ofBiotechnology which led thequest for an affordable vaccine, said it was a product of interna-tional cooperation although ithas yet to be approved by In-dian drug authorities.

While international pharma-ceutical giants GlaxoSmithK-line and Merck produce similarvaccines, each dose costsaround 1,000 rupees ($18), saidSushmita Malaviya of PATH,an international health care or-ganisation.

Rotavirus causes up to884,000 hospitalisations inIndia a year, at a cost to thecountry of 3.4 billion rupees($72 million), and kills around100,000 small children annu-

WASHINGTON (AFP) - An-gelina Jolie revealed Tuesdaythat she has undergone a dou-ble mastectomy to reduce herhigh risk of breast cancer, say-ing she is speaking out to en-courage women to addressthreats to their health.

Jolie, whose mother died ofcancer at the age of 56, saidshe had managed to keep theissue quiet and continue work-ing. Her medical proceduresended late last month. "But Iam writing about it now be-cause I hope that other womencan benefit from my experi-ence," she said.

The 37-year-old Americanactress wrote in an opinionpiece entitled "My MedicalChoice" in The New YorkTimes that she had chosen theprocedure because she carriesa faulty gene that increases herrisk of both breast and ovariancancer.

Jolie, one of Hollywood'sbest-known faces and the part-ner of actor Brad Pitt, said thatbecause of this gene, known asBRCA1, her doctors estimatedshe had an 87 percent risk ofbreast cancer and a 50 percentrisk of ovarian cancer.

"Once I knew that this wasmy reality, I decided to beproactive and to minimize therisk as much I could. I made adecision to have a preventivedouble mastectomy," shewrote.

"I started with the breasts,

as my risk of breast cancer ishigher than my risk of ovariancancer, and the surgery is morecomplex," Jolie wrote.

She said that on April 27she completed the threemonths of medical proceduresthat the mastectomies in-volved.

Jolie said her chances of de-veloping breast cancer arenow down to five percent.

Jolie and Pitt have threeadopted and three biologicalchildren.

"I can tell my children theydon't need to fear they willlose me to breast cancer," Joliesaid.

Jolie described a several-stage surgical process, themain one of which is an oper-ation that can take up to eighthours as the breast tissue is re-moved and temporary fillersare put in place.

"You wake up with draintubes and expanders in yourbreasts. It does feel like ascene out of a science fictionfilm. But days after surgeryyou can be back to a normallife," Jolie wrote.

The final phase of theprocess involved reconstruc-tion of the breasts with im-plants, she said, adding:"There have been many ad-vances in this procedure in thelast few years and the resultscan be beautiful."

Jolie said Pitt has been ahuge source of support.

NEW YORK (AFP) - TheUnited States, Iran and Russiaon Tuesday forged an unlikelyheavyweight alliance to keepthe ancient sport of wrestling inthe Olympic Games.

While political differencesbetween the three are deep, thenational teams from the threewrestling superpowers willgrapple with each other in NewYork's Grand Central Stationrailway terminal on Wednes-day to back the campaign.

Wrestling has been in shocksince the International OlympicCommittee announced in Feb-ruary that it wanted the sportejected for the 2020 Games.

There were complaints thatthe sport, where a broken noseor a cauliflower ear can be abadge of honor, is too macho, too complicated and not attrac-tive to television audiences.

But after initial hungerstrikes by coaches andOlympic champions sendingback their medals in protest, wrestling is fighting back.

The bouts between the US,Iranian and Russian teams inNew York on Wednesday andSunday in Los Angeles are partof a new offensive to make thesport more attractive.

Russia's President VladimirPutin has said he will raise thecase. But leaders of the interna-tional wrestling federation,FILA, admit they are in a des-perate battle to make sure thatthe 2016 Rio de Janeiro Gamesare not the last for one of theoriginal Olympic sports.

Christakis Alexandridis,Russia's Olympic wrestlingcoach, said that when wrestlingwas included in AncientGreece Olympics "it featuredthe beauty of the athletic body, willpower and determination."

Nenad Lalovic, expected tobe elected the FILA presidentat a congress in Moscow thisweekend, said, however, thatwrestling has been living on itspast for too long.

The IOC decision in Febru-ary was a "terrible shock",Lalovic told AFP on the side-lines of a press conference atthe UN headquarters.
