Storms moving north from Kansas and west from Colorado dropped up to five inches around the McCook area. City of McCook Public Works Director Kyle Potthoff told High Plains Radio news that Barnett Park is closed as are the roads by the Lower Shelter House near Kelly Park. A number of McCook resi- dents also lost power. Tornado warnings were issued for Chey- enne County in northwest Kansas, including the Bird City area. BE CAREFUL WHEN ON THE WATER So far, three people have drowned in Nebraska lakes this month; a stark reminder to residents to be careful when on the water. State Boating Law Administrator, Herb Angell wants people to enjoy their lake-time, but also to be aware of the many state laws concerning water safety, especially those cen- tered around life-jackets. “If you’re boating, anyone under the age of 13 has to wear a life-jacket all the time.” says Angell.” If you’re being pulled on a tube, or water ski or that type tow- ing device, you have to wear a life-jacket no matter how old you are.” Angell says about 80% of all victims who drown in boating accidents could have been saved if they had worn life- jackets. Another good safety tip; leave the booze at home. “Water and alcohol are just not a good mix.” according to An- gell, “it it really isn’t.” He warns people can be arrested or ticketed for boating over the limit, just like when behind the wheel. Angell blames a long winter and short spring for many people forgetting lake safety basics. For them, Angell recom- mends the wide variety of safety courses offered by Nebraska Game and Parks . To find them, just go to outdoor ne- braska.org. INTERESTING FACT

A 12-year-old girl from Ethiopia was kidnapped by four men on her way from school. A week later the

whole group was accosted by three lions who chased the men

away and stayed with the girl with-out harming her, only leaving when the police arrived, looking for her.

SPORTS McCook Community College graduate Michael Sookdeo, Brampton,

Ontario, has signed on to continue his baseball career at Division I

Grambling State. “It was a goal of Mike’s when he came here to go

Division I after his two years here, Mike worked extremely hard to

make sure that happened,” MCC Coach Jon Olsen said. Sookdeo tied

for seventh in the Region IX ranks with 44 RBIs in 54 games. He bat-

ted .310 this past season with four home runs, nine doubles, a .415 on

-base average and .446 slugging percentage in 217 plate appearances.

He walked 24 times which was sixth most in the Region. “He would

always spend extra time hitting, or taking extra ground balls, or in the

weight room,” Olsen said. “He was very dedicated to making himself a

better player, and I am happy that he was able to reach his goal of

signing Division I and furthering his education and baseball career.”

Sookdeo was MCC’s primary designated hitter this past season and

also played third base. He was recently named to the Region IX aca-

demic all-region team.

The defending champion Florida Gators are still alive in the College

World Series thanks to Jackson Kowar. The junior right-hander struck

out a career-high 13 batters in the Gators' 6-1 win over Texas in an

elimination game on Tuesday, keeping Florida (48-20) in the tourna-

ment and sending the Longhorns (42-23) home after just two games.

"He was unbelievable," junior infielder Jonathan India said. "He's

done it the whole year for us." As one of the underdogs in Omaha,

Texas Tech could be playing anxious and tight. But at least one Red

Raider, first baseman Cameron Warren, thinks he has the secret for

staying patient. Kowar (10-5), who was selected 33rd overall by the

Kansas City Royals in this month's MLB draft, is the first pitcher in the

last 40 years to strike out 13 batters in a College World Series outing

of fewer than seven innings. Kowar pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings,

allowing just five hits and walking two on 121 pitches.
