Nancy Pelosi, in line to become the first woman speaker in history. Aided by public dissatisfaction with President Bush, Democrats won gubernatorial races in New York, Ohio and Massachusetts for the first time in more than a decade, then put Colorado, Maryland and Arkansas in their column as well. Bush monitored the returns from the White House as the voters picked a new Congress certain to complicate his final two years in office. Tony Foriest is the winner of the race for N.C. Senate District 24, which consists of Alamance and Caswell counties, beating incumbent Hugh Webster by 453 votes. 16,787 votes for Foriest. 16,334 votes for Webster. Caswell County vot- ers pushed Foriest over with 2,986 votes, compared with Web- ster’s 1,967 there. In Alamance County, Webster led Foriest by 501 votes. Webster, 63, is a semi-retired account- ant, tax and financial adviser and for- mer farmer. He owns homes in Bur- lington and Caswell County and has served 12 years in the N.C. Senate. Democrat Foriest, 58, lives in Graham. He is retired from Xerox. He and his wife, Clara, have two adult children and a grandson. Foriest, a former Alamance County Democratic party chairman, ran for the District 24 seat in 2004, when he lost by nearly 10,000 votes. It was Webster’s largest-ever margin of vic- tory. In a Times-News questionnaire, Webster said illegal immigration and immigrants’ demands on public serv- ices were the most important issues in this year’s race. Johnson, a retired SBI agent from Snow Camp, captured 64.6 percent of the vote Tuesday. He defeat- ed Compton 18,306 to 10,005 His efforts to se- cure a second term were similar to his 2002 bid against appointed sheriff Gary Massey, when Johnson outspent Massey four-to- one in a high-profile campaign that swept him into office. Johnson staff- ed the sheriff ’s department with former local law enforcement leaders and implemented Operation Safe Schools, a five- month drug-sting operation in the Alamance-Bur- lington School System that led to the arrest of 60 students in February 2004. Other county-wide stings targeted property crimes and illicit drugs and netted sizable quantities and arrests. Voters gave Vaughan her wish on Tuesday and made a bit of history in the process. Vaughan will be the first woman to serve on the Alamance County Board of Commissioners. The retired teacher from Mebane topped incumbent Tim Sutton and challenger Eddie Boswell in a tight race for two seats on the board. Incumbent Doug Fincannon was re-elected. County election records are in- complete, but apparently a woman has never served on the board. Vaughan’s election also makes her the first Democrat elected to the board since Rickey Moorfield won a four-year term in 1992. Top to bottom, it was a tight race. Vaughan received 14,309 votes, or about 26 percent. Fincannon, a Mebane resident who runs an insurance agency in Graham, came in second with 13,580 votes, or 25.04 percent. Sutton lost by only 13 votes.
