• 1st Step Take in air through the nose or mouth.

• 2nd Step Air flows into pharynx, passes epiglottis, and moves through larynx.

When you swallow food, the epiglottis covers the entrance to the trachea, which prevents food from getting into the air pathways.

• 3rd Step Air travels into the windpipe, or trachea.
