Function of the Immune System
• To defend the body from foreign pathogens
•Defenders are: WBC’s (White Blood Cells) & Lymph

Function of Respiratory System
• Respiration means breathing bringing in O2 and releasing CO2
Steps in Breathing
• 1st Step Take in air through the nose or mouth.
Steps in Breathing
• 2nd Step Air flows into pharynx, passes epiglottis, and moves through larynx.
When you swallow food, the epiglottis covers the entrance to the trachea, which prevents food from getting into the air pathways.

• 3rd Step Air travels into the windpipe, or trachea.
Steps in Breathing
• 4th Step Trachea splits into two pipes called the bronchi, which lead into the lungs.

• 5th Step Air sacs in the lungs called alveoli, where gas exchange occurs.
