Finch fears for mental health of players in ‘bio-bubbles’REUTERS — MELBOURNE

The mental health of cricketers confined to biosecure bubbles during COVID-19 will be tested over the next two years, and Australia’s staff are working hard to prepare players for the challenges, limited overs captain Aaron Finch (pictured) said yesterday.

Finch will lead a 21-man squad to England for a T20 international series starting September 4 in Southampton, followed by a one-day series at another bio-secure venue in Manchester.

Some of Finch’s squad are also expected to travel to United Arab Emirates for the Indian Premier League before returning to Australia to prepare for India’s tour during the home summer.

To mitigate the risk of infec-tions, players’ movements will be heavily restricted during competition, which could take a toll on their mental wellbeing, said Finch.

“I definitely feel it’s going to be a real issue and a real factor over the next couple of years,

in particular,” Finch told reporters in a video call.

“It’s going to be something to monitor heavily. Because it could be a few months that guys are in these bio-bubbles and being stuck in a h o t e l r o o m b y

yourself for a couple of weeks on end - or four-five months... that could be really tough.”

Melbourne-based Finch, along with about five million other people in Australia’s second city, has been locked d o w n for all but

a few

weeks since March as author-ities battle to control COVID-19 outbreaks.

Finch said the Australian team’s sports psychologist Michael Lloyd had tailored plans for players and was talking to each about recog-nising “when things might be a little bit off”.

The 33-year-old opener added that players were on notice about adhering to biose-curity protocols, a month after England paceman Jofra Archer was sanctioned for a breach during the test series against West Indies.

“We’ve been really strong with the guys in the last couple of weeks.... Because at the end of the day, if that falls over then

we’re all out of jobs.”

Mahmood joins England staff for Pakistan T20sAFP — LONDON

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood and bowling coach will be a member of England’s backroom staff when they face his native country during an upcoming three-match Twenty20 series, it was announced yesterday.

Mahmood, 45, has plenty of English county experience from his time with Surrey and Kent.

Until last year he was a member of Pakistan’s coaching staff under Mickey Arthur but left as part of a post World Cup clear-out when the contracts of the South African and his assistants were not renewed by the Pakistan Cricket Board. But Mahmood will now support England bowling coach Jon Lewis during a series at Emirates Old Trafford starting on August 28.

Meanwhile, England have recalled Dawid Malan after the Yorkshire batsman missed the recent one-day series win over Ireland.

In a coronavirus-affected season, England’s white-ball squad remains separate from the Test squad, who begin the final match of their series against Pakistan at South-ampton on Friday.

Hampshire batsman James Vince has effectively been replaced by the fit-again Malan following a run of low scores against Ireland.

Malan scored an unbeaten century in a T20 international against New Zealand in November and the former Middlesex batsman hit a career-best double hundred for new county Yorkshire in this week’s first-class Bob Willis Trophy match against Derbyshire.

Root ‘would love’ to tour PakistanAFP — SOUTHAMPTON

England captain Joe Root has said he “would love” to play in Pakistan but is unsure when the space could be

found in a crowded schedule ahead of a planned tour in 2022.

England have not played in Pakistan since 2005/06. An attack by armed militants on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009 ended major cricket tours for a decade, with Pakistan playing the majority of their subse-quent ‘home’ matches in the United Arab Emirates.

B u t S r i

Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies and Bangladesh have all since made the trip to Pakistan.

Pakistan are 1-0 down in a three-Test series in England after a weather-affected drawn second Test at South-ampton on Monday followed a three-wicket loss at Old Trafford earlier this month.

“I’d love to go and visit Pakistan,” Root told reporters after stumps at the Ageas Bowl in an echo of recent comments made by England coach Chris Silverwood.

“It would be a great opportunity to go and play there personally. Unfortunately, it’s not my decision to make but it looks a wonderful country

to go and play cricket in," the England captain said.

“The wickets look nice and flat, which will be a nice change to what we have just played on here,” the top-order batsman added.

Test cricket returned to Pakistan in December, when Sri Lanka were the visitors.

“You see could see the emotion of everyone back in Pakistan when Test cricket was there at the back end of last year,” said Root.

“Also, speaking to a few of the players, how much it meant to them as well and they really appreciated being able to play back in Pakistan too.”

Indian gaming firm Dream11 named IPL 2020 main sponsorAFP — NEW DELHI

The Indian Premier League yesterday named Indian fantasy gaming company Dream11 as its lead sponsor, replacing China’s Vivo which was dumped following a deadly border clash between the countries in June.

IPL chairman Brijesh Patel said that the four-month deal for sponsoring the glitzy Twenty20 cricket tournament was worth almost $30m.

Dream11, which beat sep-arate bids from local online educational firms Byju’s and Unacademy, was already among the IPL’s minor sponsors.

Consumer electronics giant Vivo originally paid $330m for a five-year deal up to 2022, equating to around $66m each season.

The IPL suspended that deal earlier this month amid growing anti-China sentiment following a border clash on June 15 in the Himalayas that killed 20 Indian soldiers.

A c c o r d i n g t o a

revenue-sharing agreement between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL franchise owners, the teams earn 50 percent of the income from the central rights.

This year each of the eight franchises would get around $2m from the title

sponsor deal as opposed to $4m they got every season since Vivo signed up.

Dream11 is part-owned by China’s Tencent, according to the Mumbai-based firm’s website.

The Times of India daily cited the BCCI as saying that Tencent’s investment in Dream11 is “negligible” and “can be resolved internally”.

South Africa pull out of women’s tour to EnglandREUTERS — CAPE TOWN

South Africa’s women’s side have pulled out of a proposed tour of England next month due to COVID-19 travel restric-tions, ending hopes they would be able to return to the pitch after series against Australia and West Indies were cancelled.

Cricket South Africa made the announcement yesterday, saying players would continue train in their own provinces having failed to meet up for a planned camp on Sunday.

“It is frustrating that another opportunity for our Proteas (women) to play against top quality opposition has again had to be cancelled but as always the safety of our players and support staff is the prime consider-ation,” Director of Cricket Graeme Smith said.

England are trying to convince the West Indies to send their women’s side to play instead, local media reported.

The England men’s team played a three-test home series against West Indies last month, the first international cricket since the coronavirus pandemic, without spectators at biosecure venues.

England’s men have also played two matches of a three-Test series against Pakistan this month, also behind closed doors.

Nortje to replace Woakes in Delhi Capitals side

REUTERS — MUMBAI

South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje will replace England’s Chris Woakes in the Delhi Capitals squad for this year’s Indian Premier League, the franchise said yesterday.

Woakes, a key part of England’s 50-over World Cup-winning squad last year and a regular member of the test team, pulled out of the IPL to prolong his international career. The 31-year-old has not played for his country in the Twenty20 format since 2015.

Nortje, 26, made his interna-tional debut last year and has played six tests, seven one-dayers and three T20 matches. The tournament will begin on September 19.

Zarco to have surgery after horror crashREUTERS — LONDON

MotoGP rider Johann Zarco will undergo surgery after he was found to have a fractured wrist following his crash at last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, the Frenchman said yesterday.

The Avintia Ducati rider was involved in a high-speed crash with Franco Morbidelli’s Petronas Yamaha at turn three in Spielberg on Sunday, with their cartwheeling bikes missing Yamaha duo Val-entino Rossi and Maverick Vinales by inches.

A medical check-up on Monday revealed Zarco had fractured his right wrist. He will have an oper-ation in Italy on Wednesday.

“This is the doctor that has operated many times on Ducati riders,” Zarco said.

“Then we will come back to Austria, and I will be on Thursday at the track to have a meeting about the big incident that happened on Sunday.”

Race stewards, who have ana-lysed video footage, have yet to take action against any rider but sum-moned Zarco and Morbidelli to a meeting at the track “in order to b e t t e r u n d e r s t a n d t h e circumstances”.

The governing FIM spoke of its mission to “support riders and con-tribute to their safety and education, as well as to apply any sanctions required by the FIM Regulations.”

Zarco said if he is declared fit by the medical centre he will be available for Sunday’s Styrian Grand Prix, which will also be held at the

Red Bull Ring in Austria. Sunday’s incident has sparked a backlash, with many riders blaming the Frenchman for taking an unusual line while braking heading into the turn.

Morbidelli branded Zarco “half a killer” after the race, and said on

Twitter on Monday that “someone needs to pay the mistake”, but the Frenchman maintains he did not move under braking deliberately.

Avintia Ducati has defended Zarco, saying the telemetry data on the bike shows he did not brake early to cause a collision.

The Avintia Ducati rider was involved in a high-speed crash with Franco Morbidelli’s Petronas Yamaha at turn three in Spielberg on Sunday, with their cartwheeling bikes missing Yamaha duo Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales by inches.
