1 FROM OUR PRINCIPAL It was wonderful to see our Year 3-6 students trying hard and parcipang in the Cross Country, last Thursday. Well done to Curlewis House, who were the overall winners on the day! It was nice to have lots of parents come along and cheer on their children and assist with the event. We thank Max Carroll for all of his organisaon and encouragement. Many Mums and significant others, braved the wet and wintery condions, on Friday, for our Mothers Day Lunch – thanks for coming along. We connue to receive reports about parents breaking the road rules when dropping their students off at school and collecng them at the end of the day. We remind our community not to double park in the Yana Street Car Park, as this can be dangerous for children entering and exing vehicles, as well as causing congeson. We plead with parents to be paent and consider dropping your children a block away from the school, to relieve the congeson and encourage your children to develop independence, ulising the school crossings. NAPLAN TESTING The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for years 3 and 5 students began yesterday and continues today and tomorrow, Thursday May 16.

NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, language conventions and numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN results in a report.

ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL SURVEY We are conducting a survey to find out what your child

thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is

offered by the Department of Education and Training

to assist schools in gaining an understanding of

students' perceptions and experience of school. Our

school will use the results to plan programs and

activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

Students in Year 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the

survey during school hours in week 5, 6, and 7.

All responses are kept anonymous and personal data

will not be recorded. Your child has the right to refuse

or withdraw at any point.

NEW ONLINE MATHEMATICS SYSTEM This year our teachers have started using a new on-line assessment system, Essential Assessment. This will provide accurate information about how well each student is performing in Mathematics. A clear strength of Swan Hill Primary School is knowing and using the detailed information we have about student’s academic development.

Teachers are able to assign students a pre-assessment prior to beginning a unit of work. This pre-assessment identifies each student’s Victorian Curriculum level, by identifying the particular areas a student understands and areas students need to consolidate. Essential Assessment allows teachers to cater for the individual needs of students providing opportunities for students to reflect and create their own personal Maths goals. After the unit of work, students undertake a post-assessment which enables teachers to track the individual progress of each student.

Each student at Swan Hill Primary School has a subscription to Essential Assessment, allowing students to consolidate their learning both in class and at home. ** It is really important that students complete tasks by themselves so teachers can see where mistakes have been made and support the students in class with misunderstandings. It is not compulsory for students to finish all activities.

**Students should only do My Numeracy Activities and Sunset Maths. Please don’t complete any Pre / Post tests as this is for classroom only. All students will bring an Essential Assessment username & password home next Monday 20 May. If you have any questions please phone Janene Thompson.
