Some Double Taper wedges have smooth sur-faces and some are textured. Wedges with smooth surfaces drive the easiest, but tex-tured wedges hold a little better in the tree.

The COUNCIL FALLER'S AXE head features a narrow-ground bit for chop-ping, thick cheeks for strength, and a finish-ground poll (heel) for driving plastic wedges. The head is made from American bar quality steel, but patterned from a European style, so you might find them a little heavy for their weight classification. It is also drop forged, heat treated, and ground.

They are made from premium grade white hickory for maximum strength and durability. They are available in the following lengths: 20", 26", 28", 30", 32", & 36".

HIGH GRADE HICKORY is a tough and dense wood from which the finest tool handles are made. They are durable, they hold metal heads when properly installed, and they absorb some of the vibration created when a striking tool is used for chopping or pounding. Over the years we have experimented with handles made from other materials (such as fiberglass), but most loggers and timber fallers always come back to premium hickory handles.

Fitting instructions: Axe should be about 1⁄8" smaller than the scabbard to go into and out-of the scab-bard smoothly and freely.

Byte Tyte Chainsaw Scabbard Mount

For proper protection and coverage, a Byte Tyte must be fitted to the saw it carries. It is available in 13”, 16”, 20”, 24”, and 30” lengths. Custom lengths are available by special order.

The Byte Tyte's all-aluminum construction does not damage the saw's chain, and at the same time, it protects the area around the saw's chain from being damaged by it.

The BYTE TYTE is a chainsaw mounting device used to safely transport a ready-to run chainsaw on a 4-wheeler, a snowmobile, a tractor, a motorcycle, or any type of equipment. Forget elastic cords that take time to hook and unhook, and eventually get cut by the saw chain. With a Byte Tyte, simply slide the saw's bar and chain into the opening, then turn the screw-clamp to hold the saw in place. When you are ready to use the chainsaw, a reverse turn of the clamp releases it just as quickly.

If you are starting out or don’t climb often and are look-ing for a complete set of spurs at a low price, the first kit is a good buy. The second kit is also a good buy and offers a replaceable gaff.

If you climb a lot and would like to save weight, the spurs with titanium supports are much lighter. If you just need to replace worn or broken parts on a set of spurs you already own, we carry a large supply of spurs, pads, straps, and accessories - some are not listed. ALUMINUM PADS have a lightweight cast alumi-num body and are lined with dense rubber foam cushioning. Replacement cushions are available.

CUSHION WRAP PADS have a metal insert for keeping the shank stationary to reduce chafing. A Velcro wrap closure keeps the pad in place and offers adjustability for maximum comfort.

SUPER-CLIMBER PADS are the widest pads with-out a steel insert. Two straps on each pad also increases support.

Tree Saddles Saddle & Belt

The WEAVER SADDLE #SAD304 has split suspen-sion and is our most popular saddle. With two front D rings and two side D rings, it has four attachment points. Keeper straps prevent the front two D rings from slipping through. The leather back support is 6” high and foam filled for comfort. Sewn around the outside of the belt are five nylon loops. Each is capable of holding 15 lbs. There are also two chrome-plated brass snap clips for keeping hand tools close at hand.

The WEAVER SADDLE #SAD309 has two side D rings and two floating D rings, giving it four attach-ment points, too. Some users like the increased maneuverability and freedom of movement that a floating D ring design allows. Like the saddle above, it also has five nylon loops around the outside of the belt, and two brass snap clips.

The BUCKINGHAM SADDLE provides superior comfort and support. The back support is 5 1/2” high and constructed of rubberized belting material lined with soft top-grain leather. Chain Saw Safety CapThe CHAIN SAW SAFETY CAP is a safety system. It pro-tects your head, eyes, and ears - all with one device. The cap is made of UV stabilized ABS plastic. The hinged visor supports a mesh face-shield that provides protection from wood chips and other small flying debris. The ear muffs protect the ears plus they help keep the cap in place. The muffs and face-shield can be flipped up when not in use. We carry two styles of these safety caps, the orange version shown left and a bright-green version, not shown.

Replace that old worn and dented aluminum hat with one that has the look, fit, and feel of the classic full brimmed hard hat, but meets today’s ANSI Z89.1 specs. Like the old hat, it comes with a replaceable four-point suspension, but this one has a twist-adjust feature for quick and easy fit. The main difference between this and the classic hat is a new safety panel riveted inside in the top of the crown. This improves protection with little additional weight.

SuspensionWe still have STAZ-ON SUSPENSION for Mac T hard hats. This suspension has four mounting points and easily snaps in place.

The HARD HAT SWEAT-BAND makes wearing a hard hat on a hot day much more comfortable. The sweat-band is made of soft and absorbant terry-knit fabric, which absorbs sweat. The V-GARD CAP has a small visor and the hat is full brimmed like the popular aluminum hard hat. Both are made of fluorescent red/orange lightweight poly-ethylene. This material is non-conductive and won't dent like aluminum hats. The hat is also available in several other colors.

Caps come with ratchet suspension and hats with standard suspension. When ordering replacement suspension, please specify. The suspensions are interchange-able and either will work in the hat or cap.

PRO CHAPS are worn outside regular work pants and are held in place by Fastex® buckles. These buckles are on the waist belt and leg straps. They are light, strong, and easy to release. Many chain saw operators favor this type of cut protection because it can be put-on and taken-off as needed. This is convenient on jobs where a saw is used occa-sionally. This style of cut protection is also good for use at saw mills and on other job sites where it is beneficial to be able to share a single garment among several users on other shifts or crews.

Labonville Pro Chaps meet the February '95 OSHA standards for leg protection. They have 6-plys of cut protective fabric, a polyester/Kevlar® knit developed for Labonville (see the picture below). The chap's shell is made from 1000 denier Cordura nylon, which is tough and stain resistant. This is used on both the front and back, so the chaps are reversible.

Ask about Labonville's Fire Reisistant Chaps that feature additional flame and ember protection.

What size chaps should you buy?Chaps are are not sized like pants, where length is determined by the length of your inseam. Chaps are sized by overall length. To determine the cor-rect size, measure the distance from your belt to your instep. Chaps that are shorter will leave areas of the leg exposed and unprotected. Chaps that are too long can impede movement and cause tripping. When wearing boots with built-in cut protection, the chaps can be fitted to overlap as shown above. Before buying chaps, also check with your employer and the safety agency with authority on your job site for details on the safety apparel you need. If you require an item not listed, please call.

When should chaps be replaced?When chaps are cut, it severs fibers in the cut resistant material. Even a small cut greatly reduces protective qualities. If your chaps are cut, they've done their job. Don't patch 'em - replace 'em. Over time chaps also get soaked with gas, oil, and sweat. This also reduces their cut protective qualities. They can be laundered, but this does not completely restore the level of protection they originally offered.

View of Snap-In Kevlar®/Polyester Pad Protection on the Inside of Pants

ORIGINAL SNAP-IN SAFETY PADS are worn on the inside of your pants. They require special pants fitted with upper snaps and knee-pockets (see below) or can be sewn into regular work jeans.

Many timber fallers prefer this type of leg protection because it allows more freedom of movement than chaps worn on the out-side. With outside chaps, straps and buck-les add weight and can get hung up on brush. Inside chaps are lighter and require no straps or buckles because they are held in place by the pants.

Like outside chaps, SAFETY PADS are not represented as shields against damage, but as an aid to help prevent more severe damage in extreme cases.

What size safety pads do you wear?• Regular length is for people up to about 6'. • Tall is for long legged people or over 6'. Note: Safety pads should extend from the waist to the top of the foot.

Knee-sleeves and snaps have been added to these logger's jeans so they can be used with Labonville snap-in safety pads. If the pants are cut into, the knee sleeves help hold the safety pads in place to protect the legs. The snaps also make it easy to remove the pads for laundering or for swapping into another pair of jeans.

The WOOL FALLER'S JACKET is made of red/black plaid Woolrich® fabric. This fabric is 85% wool and 15% nylon. For wind and water repel-lency, a black nylon "yoke" covers the shoulder, chest, and upper back. The jacket features a zipper front, snapping wrist cuffs, two chest pock-ets, and two side slit pockets. It can be worn as a light jacket or a heavy shirt. Sizes: M to 3XL.

The CAMO FLEECE JACKET can be worn as a light jacket or a heavy shirt. It is also good for lay-ering under a rain coat or a heavy jacket for cold weather wear. It is made of 100% polyester fleece. Tin WearFILSON tin wear is popular with loggers and others who do hard physical work in rainy weather. The wax treatment “repels” water, yet the canvas fabric breathes to vent perspiration. This helps keep the wearer from becoming drenched in sweat, a common discomfort with conventional “water proof” rain gear. Also, its cotton canvas construction makes it some of our most durable wet weather wear.

TIN PANTS are available in two styles: Double tin pants have two layers of fabric that extend from the waist to below each knee for extra durability. They are available in tan or green. Single tin pants have only one layer and are available in tan only. Both tin pants have four deep pockets with storm flaps on the two rear ones. They are also bar tacked at all strain points and riveted steel buttons are used on the fly and suspender anchors.

The DOUBLE LOGGER COAT is constructed with two layers of fabric that extend over the shoulders and down each arm. The coat also features a comfortable full cut for easier arm movement. The front closure, flaps, and cuffs are reinforced. This is an extremely durable rain coat that will hold up in challenging work conditions.

We carry two styles of unlined cov-eralls: One is made from cotton twill, the other from a cotton/poly blend. The cotton coveralls are comfortable and the best choice if you do any welding. FALLER'S SUSPENDERS are made of special 2" wide welting that is special woven for maximum stretch and strength. They are the most comfort-able and long wearing suspenders we offer.

Leather Boot DressingOBENAUF'S LP paste was originally developed for treating the boots of wildland firefighters. What works on the boots of firefighters also works on the boots of logger's, timber fallers, and those working in less harsh condi-tions. Obenauf's has become popular among all boot wearers and is the best selling boot dressing at Madsen's. It is made by combining three different natural oils with bee’s wax and propolis. This combination resists bacteria and mildew, repels water, and keeps leather soft and flexible. Warming LP prior to its application makes it easier to apply and warming the boots with a hair dryer after its application helps LP penetrate the leather.

OBENAUF'S leather oil is easy to apply and good for touch-ups between applications of LP. It is also good for softening dry leather.

HUBERD’S is classic logger’s boot grease. Huberd’s will darken light col-ored leather because it contains pine tar. If your family has a history of working in the woods, your grandfather probably used this - Huberd’s has been making it since 1929.

BEE NATURAL wax oil helps waterproof and preserve leather boots. It contain's pine tar and is a good substitute for those who used to use Logger's World Boot Grease, which is no longer available.

BEE NATURAL mink oil contains no wax or pine tar. It simply softens dry leather and makes it flexible.

SNO-SEAL is an all season leather protectant. Its bee’s wax base water-proofs and protects leather from rain, snow, salt, and sun. It also lubricates and protects against drying and deterioration. Sno-Seal dries scent free.

Replacement CalksReplace old dull screw-in calks (spikes) with a new set of sharp ones. We carry several types in bags of fifty:

• Our standard spikes are made of tool grade steel for maximum wear and durability. This is our best seller and the best choice for all-around use.

• The "Redwood" length spike, is similar to the standard spike, but has 1/2" long points. Some customers like them when working around trees with deep bark. If you are tempted to get these thinking they will wear longer than stan-dard spikes, know they tend to pack up more with debris and their length puts extra stress on the receptacles in the boot soles.

• The Cermec spike has a hardened core. These are standard length and fit into regular receptacles. Their hard core extends their life when working in rocky or abrasive conditions.

• Wesco spikes are proprietary and fit only Wesco boots. These sharp and durable spikes have a nut shaped sub-base that fits a special tool for easy removal and replacement. They will not fit into standard calk receptacles.

Leather & Nylon Boot Laces

NYLON LACES are strong and inexpensive. If you trim them, be sure to heat up the ends. Melting the ends of the cut fibers helps keep them from fraying.

LEATHER LACES are a little more expensive, but are preferred by most loggers. They are more flexible than nylon laces and will not wear out the eyelets in boots as quickly. Our leather laces are uniformly cut from top qual-ity hide.

DANNER doesn’t make boots with calked soles, so the original Pronghorn sole tread is ground off by a local boot-maker and replaced with a second sole containing screw-in spikes. The end result is a lightweight Gortex® lined calked boot. The taller tops also offer more ankle support that the boots above and are better for keeping wood chips out of your boots when you run a saw.

These boots are not as durable and do not offer the support of con-ventional leather calks, but they are light-weight and less expensive. Users also report that they break in quickly and are comfortable right from the start. Although waterproof failure is rare, because calk soles have been added, there is no warranty if the boots leak. Style# 42282C.

HOFFMAN FALLER II CALKED BOOT is a waterproof leather-style calked boot. The 10" upper is triple-stitched and has a replace-able molded sole. The boot also has a cushion insole for comfort. Style# 037-1.

Note: Inside the leather upper is a Sympatec® bootie, which is waterproof and breathable. Although Sympatec® failure is rare, Hoffman's will not warranty the waterproofness of this boot.

MAX-FLOW Air FiltersThe Max-Flow filter system is easy to install and does not require any modification to the chain saw. The kit includes: A filter cage, a heavy-duty rain cover, two foam elements, a nut plate, and instructions. The system can be used with or with-out the rain cover.

The kit comes with two elements. Each has different pore sizes for different working conditions. A small-pore foam element is best when working in dusty conditions. The large-pore foam offers maximum flow, but does not filter fine particles. Both filters are washable and reusable. MAX-FLOW recommends using BEL RAY foam filter oil after each cleaning.

Pulling capacity depends on the size of saw you use for power, but maximum pull is about 4000 lbs. We recommend mating the winch to a mid-sized saw. The engine should be at least a three cubic inches (or 50 cc). This combination will pack a lot of power in a small spot, because like a chainsaw, a Lewis winch is made of lightweight components.

The winch mount shown couples directly to the saw’s clutch drum. Some saws have external clutches that prohibit this type of mounting.Ifasawhasanexternalclutch,thewinch is mounted using a small bar and chain which is included.

A SIMPSON CAPSTAN ROPE WINCH is a great tool for hauling, dragging, or lifting. It turns any small chain saw into a rope-pulling machine. Rope isn't as strong as cable, but it is flexible, light-weight and safer to use. Rope is usually more readily available and can be knotted or tied. With a capstan style winch, you're not limited to the length of cable that a drum will hold. Drum type winches also lose pull-ing power as the drum fills with cable - not the case with a capstan winch.

The LOG WIZARD has ball bearings on the rotor for long life and uses standard 3 1/4" planer blades for easy replacement. It comes with a universal spline that can accommodate any pitch sprocket. To install it on a saw, simply fit it up, drill two mount-ing holes in the bar, and fit up a chain. A slightly longer chain is required to drive the rotor.

A Simpson winch weighs only nine pounds and easily attaches to most small chain saw powerheads. With a three cubic inch saw engine the winch will achieve its maximum pull of about 2000 lbs. The price does not include rope or powerhead.

To installaSimpsonwinchonachainsawpowerhead,simply remove thecuttingattachment from the powerhead and bolt the winch in its place. An adapter and cut-terless chain are supplied to replace the saw's cutter chain and bar. Two wing nuts secure the adapter and saw to the winch. That's all there is to it.

Chain Loops at Bulk Pricing. Buying chain by the roll saves money. The problem with bulk chain is you may not have the tools for cut-ting and splicing - and if you have he tools, you not have the time to cut and splice. Whatever the case, we can help. If you like bulk prices, but prefer to get looped chain, we will cut them for you from your roll for $2.50 per loop on most types. You can't beat a deal like this. Break-N-MendThe BREAK-N-MEND is a handy tool for doing chain repairs on the job. When you carry this tool in the crew bus, you can repair or shorten saw chain right in the field.

It is also handy for making up new chains from a reel. No work bench or extra tools are required. Its adjustable anvil section and spinner head will accommodate saw chain from 1⁄4” to .404” pitch.

Chain BreakerThe POCKET CHAIN BREAKER is our least expensive chain breaker. This punch and anvil set is a must for every home saw repair bench.

The anvil has a number of slots for accommodat-ing 1⁄4”, low profile 3⁄8”, .325”, 3⁄8”. and .404” pitch saw chain. The anvil must be used on a solid sur-face. A hammer is also required.If you have a bench grinder, it is helpful to remove part of the rivet head prior to punching with this tool. This makes it much easier to punch out the rivets.

Fire Pump

The TOP FLOW FIRE PUMP is capable of pumping 22 gallons per minute through a 1/4" nozzle and 50' of 3/4" hose. This complies with Washington's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) pump speci-fications for logging site fire protection.

The pump features a Honda GX270 engine. This is a 270cc commercial-grade engine with a cast-iron cyl-inder for long-life and durability. It also features a 2" NPT inlet and a 1.5" NPT outlet.

Options include a hand-primer pump and foot valve. These are necessary if the pump will be used to fill a fire tank from a creek or water source located below the level of the pump, such as when a pump is mounted to a trailer.


This pump can be mounted to a tank trailer or be trans-ported on a wheeled cart or mounting plate, which are both options.

Professional chain saw users often have a need for por-table electrical power. A HONDA generator is a good source for using power tools, grinders, or lights. It improves the conditions on any work site.

What type generator is best?HONDA generators come in many sizes and styles. It can be confusing to choose one. Here are some things to consider:

• Buy one that's a little bigger than you currently need. While weight and cost are important factors, there is no-such-thing as too much power.

• Make sure it has the features you need. If you end up buying a less expensive, but louder unit and run in a campground, your neighbors won't like you. Spending a little extra to get a quiet model with more features gives you additional flexibility.

If you need portable electrical power, a HONDA generator is the best solution. HONDA generators are quiet and efficient. Best of all, they are also reli-able and easy-to-start.

What are watts?Most generators are rated by the maximum amount of power or watts they can produce. HONDA generators show this in their model number. For example, an EU1000 will pro-duce a maximum of 1000 watts.

• What are watts? Watts are: Volts X Amps. In other words, 110 volts X 4 amps = 440 watts. So if you don’t know how much power a particular appliance requires, look in the owner’s manual for the amps it needs to run. Sometimes this information can also be found on a tag on the unit. Once you know amps and volts, you can figure watts.

• When selecting a generator, remember it's rated at its maximum output, but it will not perform at this level for long periods. Also, remember that power cords and plugs reduce the efficiency of any generator. This means if you figure you need 2500 watts, buy a 3000 watt generator.

Which size is most common?Picking a generator can be tough because there are so many choices. Here are few sug-gestions:

• Need to run a few lights? A 1000 watt model will work great. It also comes with a built-in 12 volt battery charger.• Need to also run a SILVEY® chain grinder? You'll want one that produces at least 3000 watts.• Need to power everything above including a fully equipped camp trailer with an air conditioner? Consider a 6500 watt model.

Pro Saw Performance Tips

The following information will help you learn how to sharpen square-ground saw chain with a chisel-file. Before you begin, know that square-fil-ing takes practice and patience to develop, so be prepared to work through a learning curve. Square-ground saw chain is dif-ficult to file, so don't give up if your initial efforts don't meet your expectations.

One thing that can really help you learn to square-file is guidance from a mentor. If someone on your crew square-files, and his chains cut well, become his friend. Having hands-on help from someone with filing experience can shorten the learning curve. But, be careful who you select for a teacher. Don't allow a "so-called" expert confuse you with misinformation. Only accept guidance from someone whose own hand-filed chain performs well.

Types Of Files

Before you get started, you need to acquire a chisel-file or

two. There are several types available. The most popular is the hexagonal or "triangular" chisel file as it is more com-monly known. It does actually have six sides, but only three "corners" or filing edges. Other file choices include the double-bevel chisel-file and another called a "goofy" file. Both have just two corners for sharpening, but also have additional wide flat surfaces that can be used for lowering depth-gauges.

If you are not sure what file to start with, our advice is to start with a triangular file. It is the smallest file and fits best into the throat of most 3/8" pitch cutter-teeth. Since it has three corners, it will also sharpen more cutter-teeth before it wears out than either the double-bevel or goofy file. Later on, you might try one of these. Since they are dual-pur-pose, they are good for carrying in your pack because you can do a lot of chain maintenance with just one file.

For clarity, depth gauge maintenance is not done at the

same time chisel cutter-teeth are being sharpened. It is often done in conjunction with cutter-teeth sharpening, but always done in a second operation. There is no square-file that can sharpen and cut depth gauges at the same time.

Getting Set Up to File

If you have a shop or garage area with a work-bench and a vise, this is a good place to sharpen for the first time. Clamp your saw and its guide-bar in the vise. If you have a work light, position it on the cutter-teeth. Square-filing is often done in the field, but it is best to learn in conditions with good light and stable cutter-teeth.

Next, select a dull square-ground chain that has never been resharpened. If you start with a chain that has been

resharpened, it may have gullet material on its cutter-teeth that gets in the way of your file. Yes, this gullet material can be removed, but since you are new to this, this is a step to avoid because you already have plenty to learn. The other bene-fit of starting with a chain that still has a factory grind is you have the manufacturer's origi-nal shape and angles to follow.

It is also helpful to have a second new and unused square-chisel chain to look at. This chain should be brand-new with factory-ground cutter-teeth. If you have a question or doubt about what you are trying to accomplish, you will have this chain to refer to.

Filing Cutting Direction

You will notice in the illus-trations that the file is posi-tioned so it cuts going "into" the cutter-tooth. There are a few people who prefer to file in the other direction and this is OK. They do this so the hard chrome is "lifted" from the cutter-tooth and not driven into the file. They argue this method helps preserve expensive square-files. In practice, most filers cut going "into" the tooth. This is the direct ion we recommend because it cuts the cleanest edge on the cutter's chrome plating.

The Rules

Before you begin, here is a summary of what you need to do: 1) The corner of the file must be aligned with the corner in the chain's cutter-tooth. 2) Along with corner alignment, sharpening angles in the cutter-tooth must be maintained. 3) All the dull material needs to be removed. 4) Your results must be duplicated on every cutter-tooth.

Square Filing The First Time

Begin by placing your chisel-file in the face of a cutter-tooth. Determine which corner in the file will align with the corner in the cutter-tooth. The photos and illustrations here should help you do this.

Once the corners are aligned, position the file on its other axis so the surfaces on the cutter-tooth match up to the file

surfaces. Once everything is ready, take a few strokes with the file. Next, remove the file and examine the cutter-tooth. You will see marks where the file has taken away steel. Make adjustments to your file stroke based on what you see. Proceed to sharpen the tooth until it has a sharp corner and looks similar to a new tooth on your refer-ence chain.

When learning to sharpen any chain (even round), it is important to know what a sharp tooth looks like. If you don't have an image in your mind of what you are trying to accom-plish, you won't have good results. Some round-filers get by without really knowing what they are after, but this won't work for square-filers.

One telltale sign of a filer's level of sharpening experience is how he determines if his chain is sharp. An experienced filer doesn't feel the corner of of a cutter-tooth with his thumb. He determines if it is sharp just by looking at it. The point here is: Learn what a sharp tooth looks like. Your eyes can be trained to tell you more than your thumb.

Corner to Corner Alignment

A big part of learning a new skill is learning what is essen-tial. In the case of square-filing, corner alignment is that essen-tial. Aligning the corner in the file with the outside corner in the cutter-tooth is the single most important objective. If you don't retain anything else written on these pages, remem-ber this.

Unfortunately, there is mis-information out there that some people try to follow. It contends that the outside corner in the cutter-tooth, the inside corner in the cutter-tooth, and the corner in the file all need to align. This is not true. The only corners that must align are the outside corner of the cutter-tooth and the corner in the file. Now, if the corner on the file happens to align with the inside corner of the cutter tooth this is OK -- it is just not necessary. The point here is: The corners to

focus on is the outside corner of the cutter-tooth and the corner in the file.

Duplicating Sharp Cutter-Teeth

Congratulations, you have produced one sharp cutter-tooth. It is now necessary to duplicate what you have done on the rest of your saw chain's cutter-teeth. If you were using a square-grinder, this would be easy because you would now set the stops on your grinder (which limit travel) and you would be duplicating square-ground cutter-teeth with ease. With a file, it is more difficult because you have no stops to set. You must learn to do this by eye or with the aid of mea-suring tools.

Some people count file strokes to quantify how much cutter-tooth material they remove. While this is better than nothing, it is not an accu-rate way to measure because each file stroke does not remove the same amount of material.

Right-handed filers find it is easiest to sharpen left-hand cutter-teeth. If you are left-handed, the opposite is true. Whatever the case, all file strokes are not equal and you must compensate for this. Do your best to make each tooth identical. Also, know that

duplicating cutter-teeth is diffi-cult for even the most accom-plished square-filers.

All cutter-teeth need to be identical, because when they are not, each takes a different sized bite of wood. This causes a chain to chatter and vibrate. In addition, uneven cutter-teeth can cause a saw to cut crooked. Here's why: If you add up all the chips taken by the cutter-teeth on the left and compare them to those taken by the right, they must be the same. If they are not, the cut will "pull" to the side with the teeth that remove the most wood.

Beaking

A few paragraphs ago you read how important corner alignment was. The following may seem like a contradiction at first, but read on and you will learn a filing "secret." The rule is: Align the corner of the file with the corner in the cutter-tooth, but if you are going to be off, (here's the secret) be low.

No human is perfect. This is especially true when "square" filing. So instead of trying for a perfect corner, aim a little low. Yes, you will create a small "side-beak" in many teeth, but cutters sharpened with a slight side-beak will still perform pretty well. If you aim for per-

It is important that each sharp cutter tooth be the same on a saw chain. A chain with cutter-teeth filed at different angles and at different lengths will chatter and may not cut straight.

fection and end up with high corners on some teeth (a top beak), your chain won't cut worth a darn. So, whatever margin of error you need to allow, make sure you never create cutter-teeth with top beaks.

Yes, there is a down side to creating cutter-teeth with small side-beaks and that is some loss in a chain's stay-sharp ability. This is because beaked corners are not as durable and those with perfect corners. They don't have as much support. This explains why filed chain often has less stay-sharp ability than chain that is ground. Most grinder operators can produce nearly perfect cutter-teeth because it is easy to get and keep corner alignment.

Square Grinding vs. Square Filing

The challenge of position-ing the corner of the file in the corner of the cutter-tooth, hold-ing the correct angles, and doing all of this while moving the file is difficult. Some describe it as "dent is t level " prec is ion . Sharpening with a square

performance because they lift a cutter-tooth away from the wood. When a cutter-tooth can't get to the wood, it doesn't perform as well. The longer gullets get, the more they impact cutting performance. Fortunately, gullets are easy to remove with a round file. If you have access to a round chain grinder, this is an even easier way.

Another problem with gul-lets is they can make it impossi-ble position a file correctly in the face of a cutter-tooth. This often occurs when you are trying to file a chain that was

grinder is easier because the grinder holds both the cutter-tooth and the grinding wheel in place (once it is adjusted cor-rectly). It also helps you dupli-cate cutter-teeth. Stops limit travel, so its easy to duplicate the results of the first sharp cut-ter-tooth on all the rest. These advantages are why most users who sharpen with a square-grinder produce chains that perform well.

Gullets

If you sharpen saw chain with a round grinder or round file, you may have never heard of a gullet before. The reason is this material is removed during regular sharpening. But with a square-ground cutter-tooth, a gullets forms from "left over" material left in the lower por-tion of a cutter-tooth after it is sharpened. This material must be removed in a second opera-tion. Many pro saw users do not do this often enough because they don't realize how important it is.

All cutter-teeth have built in "set." If you look at a cutter-tooth with a long gullet from the top down, you may see the gullet extending beyond the working corner of the cutter-tooth. Long gullets hurt cutting

previously sharpened on a square-grinder. When this hap-pens it is necessary to remove the gullets before you can resharpen a chain's cutter-teeth.

Depth Gauges

Having well sharpened cut-ter-teeth is important, but a chain won't perform well unless its depth gauges are also set correctly. Unlike gullets, which are often not cut enough, many pro saw users cut depth gauges too much. This is usually done to compensate for teeth that are poorly filed, but this is a bad practice. Saw chain with low depth gauges doesn't perform well and is more dangerous to operate. On most OREGON saw chain, the recommended setting is stamped right on the depth gauge, so its easy to find if you don't remember it.

Our Advice

• Learn to sharpen saw chain with a round file before you try your hand at square-filing. Square or chisel-filing requires much more skill and precision, but the round-filing experience provides good basic skills. Once you can sharpen well with a round file, then try square-fil-ing.

• If you do most of your sharp-ening with a square-file, con-sider having someone grind your chains after every two or three filings. A machine grind done by a capable operator will restore the correct angles, corner alignment, and tooth lengths. This makes the chain much easier to resharpen with a square-file.

• If you occasionally sharpen your filed chains with a square grinder (as we suggest), make sure the grinder operator does not over-heat your chain's cut-ter-teeth. Inexperienced or sloppy grinder operators some-times burn cutter-teeth. Over-heating damages the teeth and usually makes them super-hard. This makes them nearly impos-sible to sharpen with a file.

• You will never become so good at square-filing that you won't want or need a square-grinder. One good thing that comes with square-filing expe-rience is you learn what well-sharpened square-ground cut-ter-teeth look like. So even if you don't master the skill of hand-filing, the effort is not wasted because the experience will reduce the learning curve associated with learning to use a square-grinder.

• Many pro saw users who square-file, don't do it well. Most don't realize (or admit) the kind of cutting performance they would enjoy if their chains were sharpened properly. So, if you find that square-filing is not for you AND you don't see yourself getting a square-grinder, don't keep doing it. Instead, sharpen your chain with a round-file. No, your chain won't perform as well as

continued from page 107 it did when it was square-ground, but it will cut better than a poorly sharpened square-filed chain. Round-filing is much easier to do effectively. Plus, the files are less expen-sive.
