6 fall/winter weddings 2009

We wanted to give brides-to-be something new and fresh in At Home in Arkansas Weddings this fall, to fi ll its pages with bridal fashion, products and tips that nod to tradition but show that a wedding can be fun and customized too. An initial inspiration was At Home marketing coordinator Lauren Quick Strother’s fall wedding, which was full of unconventional charm. In the throes of planning her nuptials while we were working on this issue, Lauren kept us in the loop about the latest trends as she chose stationery, booked her photographer, attended cake tastings and so forth. (Of course, her expertise came in particularly handy as we coordinated our fall wedding photo shoot at Alda’s Magnolia Hill in Little Rock.)

What we learned from Lauren’s experience is that today’s couples are thinking outside the box. Classic cream-colored stationery is yielding to colorful designs. Party favors have much more thought behind them. Traditional white cakes are becoming artistic culinary creations, or are being replaced altogether with other delicious desserts. Simply put, engaged couples are feeling the need to modify tradition for a more personalized affair.

You’ll fi nd instances of this in our selection of real weddings, featuring an outdoor-loving Texarkana couple who provided guests with to-go kits for making s’mores and a Hot Springs couple who opted for coconut pies in lieu of a groom’s cake. A common denominator in each of these weddings is that the couples managed to blend unexpected with more traditional elements, achieving an outcome that was still elegant yet representative of their personalities. From the compilation of products on our Bright Ideas pages to the photo shoot at Alda’s Magnolia Hill, we’ve packed our pages with options for both embracing tradition and adding a personal touch. So go ahead, express yourself. After all, it is your wedding.

WHEN ASHLEY COX AND JOHN ESTES began planning their late September wedding, they envisioned it as intimate and traditional, but also wanted to put their own spin on things. “One major blessing and the reason that planning our wedding was so fun was that John wanted to be involved with everything,” Ashley remembers. “In the end you could tell that he and I both had a say. He was an amazing groom.”

Ashley turned to magazines throughout the planning phase and eventually collected a file folder full of photos. “I also designed the save-the-date postcards and invitations,” adds Ashley, who studied graphic design in college. She enlisted Shirley’s Flowers and Gifts to recreate floral elements from a photo in her idea file, while vintage plates inspired a fall-looking chartreuse, yel-low, orange and brown color scheme.

The couple chose Central United Methodist Church in Rogers because it “felt small and cozy but actually held many people,” Ashley explains. Stained glass windows and a mass of candles both in front of the cross and lining the aisles helped to create the intimate atmosphere Ashley and John had sought, as did the ceremony’s emphasis on their faith. The couple personalized the ceremony further by writing their own vows.

For the reception at the Doubletree Hotel in Rogers, Ashley and John gath-ered photos for a slideshow that guests enjoyed watching on mini-televisions. And Rick’s Bakery in Fayetteville created a cream and brown zebra-striped bridal cake with three tiers, and also lined the groom’s cake with tuxedo strawberries. “Both cakes were so us,” Ashley notes.

As for the more traditional part of the occasion, Ashley wore a light ivory satin halter gown with a crochet lace overlay that featured a dropped waist and a chapel-length train. It’s no wonder John’s favorite memory of the wedding is of his bride. He recalls, “Seeing each other for the first time that day was the most excited I have ever been in my life.”

Abundant blooms and twinkling lights create a soothing setting for a nature-infused wedding in

Little Rock

CANDLES WERE FLICKERING as Megan Floyd stepped out of a horse-drawn car-riage and joined her fiancé, Neil Osam, under an arbor made by her father and covered with vines and blue hydrangeas. With the lake at Wildwood Park in Little Rock as the backdrop, the couple exchanged personalized vows while Neil’s aunt, a minister from New Orleans, performed the ceremony.

This combination of natural setting and family involvement is exactly what the couple had in mind when they began planning their October wedding. “We’re both relaxed people and we wanted an outdoor atmosphere that would be welcoming to family and friends,” says Megan. “With the lake, the swans and the horse-drawn carriage, Wildwood Park was a dream-like setting.”

To complement the locale, Megan chose a color palette of brown, blue and green. Recep-tion tables were outfitted with brown tablecloths and vases of blue and green hydrangeas and orchids designed by Becky Clement of Inspired by Nature, and the flowers were tucked into the tiers of the wedding cake as well. The palette extended over to the groom’s brown Paul Morrell tuxedo and blue tie and the bridesmaids’ indigo strapless tea-length dresses from Proposals.

twilight time

Page 27: Weddings in Arkansas

Megan chose a strapless, lightly beaded lace gown from Proposals, noting that it caught her eye for its simple style. The ivory sheath featured a scalloped lace edge on the bodice and a lace semi chapel-length train extended over a sweep train. To complement the dress, she opted for a fingertip length lace-edged veil. Megan’s niece served as the flower girl, and carried through the nature-inspired look with a cream-colored dress from David’s Bridal and a halo of hydrangeas.

Classical guitar music was courtesy of Kyle Priest and Doug Maglothin, friends and fellow members of a band in which Neil is the drummer. For a personal touch, the couple had the groom’s cake made to look like Neil’s snare drum, and surrounded it with votive candles. “Any-where there was a place for twinkling lights or candles, we added them,” says Megan. “It was very natural and very soft, just the beautiful evening we wanted.”

A Little Rock wedding channels fall with vivid flowers and

autumnal details

WHEN HEATHER CASS AND BRENT WINSTON made the decision to have an October wedding, incorporating fall décor seemed a natu-ral next step. “We had to make sure our wedding day didn’t interfere with any holidays, or golf or hunting,” Heather laughs, continuing, “My goal was to have a simple wedding, but elegant with a fall feel.”

Turning to florist Phil Cato of About Vase, Heather achieved her dream fall wedding by us-ing plenty of flowers and autumnal details. For the ceremony at Calvary Baptist Church in Little Rock, Cato festooned a 10-by-6 cross, built by Heather’s father as the main backdrop, with a gar-land of baby’s breath and white flowers. Cato also constructed a shelf to hold lamps filled with ivory pillar candles, smilax and magnolia buds. Heather’s bridesmaids, wearing Watters & Watters gowns in an acorn-brown color, carried smaller bronze lanterns that held lit candles, Mokara orchids and berries, and the groomsmen wore black suits with acorn-colored vests.

Heather’s vivid bouquet popped against her strapless, trumpet-style lace wedding dress from Low’s Bridal and Formal in Brinkley, bursting with flame calla lilies, Mokara orchids and orange dahl-ias. Heather notes, “My great-grandmother’s rosary was wrapped in my bouquet as well.”

The couple chose the JLLR Building’s ballroom and veranda for their reception, which featured cream tablecloths, espresso brown and moss green runners, and centerpieces of cylindrical glass vases holding orange Vanda orchids and votive candles. Floral brown Bichon tablecloths tied with moss green sashes dressed up cocktail tables, and a tree placed centrally on the buffet table displayed strings of more orange Vanda orchids and lights.

FALLING IN

Page 29: Weddings in Arkansas

Heather’s wedding cake boasted cream cheese icing and layers of chocolate, strawberry, white and Italian cream cake, while the chocolate groom’s cake paid homage to Brent’s favorite sport. “On top of the cake was a bride and groom, with the groom holding his golf clubs waiting to leave the reception,” Heather smiles. “It was cute.”

The couple danced to “At Last” performed by local singer Ramona Smith, whom they had heard on their first date, before opening up the floor to enthusiastic friends and family. “One of my favorite memories is watching everyone on the dance floor,” Heather recalls. “The whole night was just magical!”

WHEN TEXARKANA RESIDENTS Emily Beck and Greg Richards began planning their fall wedding, cherished family heirlooms served as the starting point. First there was the dress, handed down to Emily by her mother and originally sewn by her grandmother. Then there was the jewelry, including blue beads from her pa-ternal grandmother and a treasured wedding ring. And eventually, there were even decorations, including vin-tage milk bottles from a family dairy.

The couple sought distinctive elements in combina-tion with these heirlooms “that would convey our per-sonalities and relationship through the entire event,” says Emily. Since outdoor activities like camping, hiking and kayaking had played a large role in their courtship, they opted for a natural setting and were married on the lawn at the Texarkana Country Club. Reception décor followed suit, working tree branches and other elements into the table settings and even including pine-tree shaped cakes from All In Good Taste Bakery in Texarkana. The wed-ding favor table was proclaimed “Camp Richards,” and boasted a twig tent as well as goody bags filled with all the ingredients for making s’mores at home.

Brown and blue were used throughout the event to evoke the colors of earth and sky, and Emily carried a touch of blue over to her personal attire and spiced up her heirloom dress with a pair of Manolo Blahnik teal satin sling-back pumps. For the reception, she changed into an Alice & Olivia chiffon cocktail dress, and then displayed her wedding dress so that guests could admire her grandmother’s handiwork. “Alongside it, we had my mother’s wedding portrait as well as mine, so you could see two generations wearing the same dress,” adds Em-ily.

Greg opted for a casually elegant Michael Kors suit, and bridesmaids chose their own dresses in any style they preferred, sticking with the brown color scheme with blue accents. “All of those elements made it a more casual, comfortable event for everyone,” says Emily, “which is how Greg and I are and how we wanted our wedding to be.”

an affair to remember

Text: Paulette Pearson Photography: Lance Johnston, Lance Johnston Photographers

ANNA AITKEN AND DALTON SMITH KNEW they wanted a traditional wedding, but they also want-ed it to be a fun and memorable event for their family and friends. “I wanted a classic wedding that would be beautiful and tasteful 20 years from now,” Anna explains. “We also wanted it to feel comfortable and relaxed yet still formal.”

Anna found a fitting backdrop for their traditional ceremony at Central Baptist Church in Hot Springs, featuring beautiful mahogany wood and stained glass windows. And she chose to wear a handmade lace veil and an ivory Alencon lace halter dress with a trumpet skirt and sweep train because she loved the simplistic and classic look of the gown. “It had an antique feel and it was very comfortable,” she continues. The brides-maids wore long chocolate-brown chiffon dresses, while the men donned classic black tuxedos, ivory shirts and ties.

Highlighting the couple’s love of family, an heirloom handkerchief tied into the bridal bouquet was a gift from Dalton’s mother, iron candelabras with lit candles flanked the altar in remembrance of the couple’s grandparents, and photos of their parents and grandparents sat by the guestbook at the Hot Springs Country Club reception. “Our family is very important to us,” Anna explains. “And I love old photographs.”

A traditional Hot Springs wedding puts the focus on family and friends

Page 33: Weddings in Arkansas

Anna added fresh pops of color to her warm chocolate brown and ivory color palette through floral arrangements that included mango calla lilies, orange gladiolus, green bells of Ireland and green roses, red hypericum berries and green spidermums. Cascading flowers enhanced the simple four-tier white cake with white butter cream frosting, which was positioned on glass vases containing more flowers. Instead of the traditional groom’s cake, the couple opted for coconut pies, Dalton’s favorite dessert. “They were delicious and our guests really liked the idea of something other than chocolate cake,” Anna says.

The couple departed in a 1964 Stingray Corvette Convertible, which “has been in the family since Dalton was young so it was really special,” Anna explains. She adds, “I planned all the details of our wedding with the help of my mother, mother-in-law and wonderful and talented vendors, so when I got to see the vision come to life it was a dream come true!”
