The Greeks and Romans raised their glasses to the gods when they toasted the newly married couple. It’s said that the Greeks started the idea of toasts so that everyone would drink from the same ewer and it would avoid anyone being poisoned during the celebrations. Meanwhile, the Romans added a piece of burnt toast into their glasses as a way to remove any impurities from the wine. After the Romans invaded Britain, the tradition of the burnt toast continued being practiced and eventually the wedding toast meant saluting with a drink. Are Wedding Speeches Given in Any Traditional Order? Not really. At a lot of weddings, typically the best man will deliver his speech, followed by the maid/matron of honor. The rest of the speeches loosely follow in this order: • The groom gives his speech and toasts his new bride. • The bride gives her speech and toasts her new husband. • Anyone else who has been asked to give a speech will do their toasts. • The father of the bride gives his speech and toast last and thanks the guests for attending the wedding. Types of Wedding Speeches or Toasts Wedding speeches can be anything from outright, sentimental tear jerkers to hilarious acts of comedy. They can be recited like poetry or they can even be original songs written just for that couple. Most of the toasts I’ve seen lately are somewhere in between, just a little bit on the serious side, but adding some humor and outright hilarity to the moment. Weddings are supposed to be happy and fun, not droll, boring and overly sentimental. I’ve also seen some great wedding speeches sung to the bride and groom with original lyrics but sung to a popular song. Sometimes the whole wedding party gets in on the action to surprise the bride and groom. Some Tips for a Great Wedding Speech or Toast If you’re the best man or maid/matron of honor, and especially if you’re the father of the bride, it’s a good idea to start planning out your speech as soon as the wedding date is set. If you’re especially shy or really don’t like speaking in front of crowds, you might want to make it short but obviously meaningful, even if it’s funny.
