For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the fi rst and most important deci-sions in planning a wedding. With thou-sands of choices in ev-ery price range, fi nding the perfect wedding dress can be a diffi cult and time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot more enjoyable.

First things firstStart by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress -- and don't forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, veil, and/or hair or-naments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you're not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options.

Firm yet flexibleThere will be no shortage of opinions -- from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel -- about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride's alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many potential options, you

might want to con-sider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be "contenders."

Go for a flat-tering fitRemember: Your goal is to fi nd a dress that fl atters your body and expresses your per-sonal style -- not to fi t into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier

shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders and face. Similarly, there's no rule that a wed-ding dress has to be fl oor-length. If you're planning a daytime or more

casual wedding, you might want to consider a tea-length dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter.

Comfort is keyStyle and fi t may be the two most important factors in choosing a wedding dress, but comfort should be a close third. Ask yourself if you will be comfort-able in a particular dress given the setting in which your wedding will take place. For instance, if you've always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, you may

want forego a dress with a long, trailing train that could trip you up on your walk to or down the aisle. Even if you're planning an indoor event, having a dress and shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful will greatly increase your odds of enjoying your special day to the fullest.

PLANNER & GIFT GUIDE 2010

There are infi nite opportunities for uniqueness with wedding invita-tions, which is why selecting the right invitation is often one of the most confusing aspects of planning a wedding.

Invitations are usually your fi rst line of communication regarding the upcoming celebration, and they typically set the tone of the affair and what guests should expect. Wedding etiquette experts also say that gift-giving is subject to infl uence by the type of invitation received. Guests also tend to determine what they will wear to the wedding depending upon the invitation.

All of these perceptions about the wedding are made even before guests read the fi rst line of sentiment on the invitation itself. With so much inferred meaning placed on invitations, it's no wonder you may be nervous about choosing and sending out invitations. Here are some pointers so you'll make the right decisions.

There are many personalization options at your disposal with wedding invitations. You'll be able to choose the texture, color and shape of the paper, as well as the font and ink color in many cases. These selections can be combined with other embellishments, such as envelope linings, extra layers of paper, vellum accents, ribbons, and calligraphy styles. You may also be able to select a monogram or artwork to further embellish the invitation.

If your wedding will be a formal affair, choose a classic style invitation that will refl ect the formalness of the affair. If your wedding will be casual, choose a design and font that expresses that feeling.

• Wait until you have defi nite times and locations for the ceremony and reception before submitting any wording to the invitation company.

• Type out the wording you prefer with a word-processing program on your computer. Run a spell-check and print it out and read it over several times. This will cut down on the chances for error once the wording is sent for printing.

• To know how many invitations to order, take the forecasted number of guests and divide that num-ber by two. Then add 25 to 30 additional invitations for any single guests you may be inviting as well as to have extras on hand in case you make a mistake addressing the invitation. So if you are inviting 150 people (assuming most will come as couples), order 100 invitations.

• Many people opt to print out addresses on the invitation envelope themselves. While home printers and software packages have certainly advanced, it may be diffi cult to match the font and style of your invitation. Furthermore, while hand-addressing invi-tations is more time-consuming, it adds a personal-ized touch and shows you care about those invited.

• Make sure you bring an invitation to the post of-fi ce to be weighed so you can determine how much postage you will need. Mail them 4 to 6 weeks be-fore the wedding to allow for response time. It's customary to enclose a response card with postage already applied so guests can simply drop their RSVP in the mail.

Here are some other tips to consider:

PLANNER & GIFT GUIDE 2010

Leading up to their big day, couples have lots to worry about be-fore they fi nally get to walk down the aisle as man and wife. The tri-als and tribulations of planning a wedding is no small task, as even the most minor details must be accounted for.

Such is the case with the fl oral arrange-ments. Though not a minor detail in any way, preparing a wed-ding day fl oral ar-rangement does have its minor details, par-ticularly when it comes to the more individual aspects of a fl oral plan. For instance, the fol-lowing components must be considered when devising a fl oral plan.

The bridal bouquet - It's tradi-tion for bridal bouquets to contain white or cream-colored fl owers such as stephanotis, roses, orchids, or lilies. Many bridal bouquets also include fi llers like baby's breath as well as some green or ivy, as well as ribbons or addi-tonal accessories.

Bouquets for attendants - Attendants' bouquets should be identical, and it's best to coordinate these bouquets with

the attendants' gowns. Only the maid of honor traditionally receives a slighlty different bou-quet, as it's customary to give her one apart from the rest, though not signifi cantly so.

Boutonnieres for grooms-men and ush-ers - The guy's side of the wedding also needs to take part in the fl oral plan. Worn in a button-hole or lapel, a bouton-niere should be worn on the left lapel and match a fl ower from the brides-maids' bouquet. The groom should also wear a boutonniere, though his

should match a fl ower from the bride's bouquet. When wearing boutonnieres, men should not wear additional accessories such as pocket squares.

Flowers for special guests - Certain special guests, such as grandmothers and mothers, should receive corsages. While the corsages do not need to be identical, they should match the bridesmaids' bouquets. It's best to consult with a fl orist for a corsage color that matches all dresses, as typically the cor-

sages must be ordered before the bride and groom know what their mothers, grandmothers and other special guests will be wearing. A corsage that goes with anything, therefore, is ideal.

Outdoor wedding popularity is on the rise. According to statistics, 35 percent of weddings are now outdoor occasions. Gardens and parks top the list of outdoor locales for weddings, followed by beaches.Having a wedding outdoors can be a beautiful event, but more than traditional weddings, outdoor weddings must take Mother Nature into heavy consideration. Consider these other tips to increase the fun and keep stress at bay.• Visit the venue for a guests'-eye view: It's important to visit your wedding site and view the surroundings as your guests will experience them on your wedding day. Consider where and how the sun shines at that hour of the day, so guests won't be blinded and uncomfortable. Make sure the venue is set up so ev-eryone can have an unobstructed view of the happy couple. Keep temperature in mind as well. Will guests be too hot or too cold, and are there ways to correct those issues?• Rain, shine or something in between: Naturally you will have to consider precipitation on your wedding day. Putting the "good luck factor" of a rainy wedding day aside, few people want to sit through a ceremony when rain or snow is falling. Therefore ensure that the venue has an indoor option if absolutely need be, or at the least a suitable outdoor sheltered area.• Expect the unexpected: Unexpected guests may show up to your wedding (of the furry or feathered kind) if it takes place outdoors. There also may be ambient noises or other distractions. Also, it's not uncommon for the weather to change relatively quickly, despite how adamant the local weather person was that it would be sunny all day.

It's vital to remain calm no matter what bumps come up along the way. If you can weather the inconve-niences and unexpect-ed things, guests will be better equipped to remember the overall positive experience of your wedding instead of the minor details that had the potential to derail it.• There she blows: The wind can be some-

thing couples do not anticipate on their wedding day. From photos to outdoor receptions, a windy day can wreak more havoc than rain sometimes. Wind can launch tablecloths and set favors airborne. It can also catch your veil and blow hairstyles into disarray. If you prefer not to have the wind in your hair and face, go to Plan B and move the party indoors.• Bugs and allergies: Keep in mind seasonal allergies and insect invaders at an outdoor wedding. You don't want guests sneezing or swatting. Pack allergy relief pills and keep citronella candles or pleas-ant-smelling bug spray in courtesy baskets at the reception so guests can ensure the sniffl es and buzzing bug-off.• Dress accordingly: It is common courtesy to let your guests know that a portion or all of the wedding will be hosted outdoors. This way they can bring what they need to be comfortable. For the wedding party and the bride and groom, outdoor conditions should also be factored into wardrobe decisions. A shorter gown or more casual clothing may work better for a beach wedding. Avoid strapless gowns and don sheaths or jackets if the wedding is outdoors in cooler weather. Remember, it's not just about look-ing good, but about feeling good and enjoying yourself at the wedding as well.

It's vital to remain calm no matter what bumps come up along the way. If you can weather the inconve-niences and unexpect-ed things, guests will be better equipped to remember the overall positive experience of your wedding instead of the minor details that had the potential to derail it.• There she blows: The wind can be some-

PLANNER & GIFT GUIDE 2010

After a bride says "I do" to a life with her new husband, she often says "I do" to a new last name. Whether she takes the name as a loving gesture, to make it more convenient when having kids, or simply to rid herself of an unappealing maiden name, changing her surname will require some steps to ensure the legality of a change in identity.Because a name change will require a copy of the mar-riage certifi cate -- something that isn't often obtained until after the ceremony -- it's best to wait until after you've re-turned from a honeymoon to change documentation. Also, in order to travel, you may require birth certifi cates, passports, a license, or another form of ID. It will be impossible to change all of those forms of identifi cation before the wedding. Inconsistent documentation could cause hang-ups in the travel process. Additionally, you may be charged if you try to change your name on airline tickets after they've already been issued. Therefore, enjoy your maiden name a little longer until the honeymoon bliss is over and it's back to reality.

Ready to get started? Here are most of the documents you'll need to change as you take on your new married name.1. Social Security Card: If you are a U.S. resident, you will need to go to your local social security offi ce, or download a form from the IRS Web site to apply for a change of name on your social security card. It takes approximately 10 days after the application is received for the IRS to update the records. In Canada you will need to change your Social Insurance Number card.2. Drivers license: In order to change your drivers license and vehicle registration, you'll likely have to visit the Department of Motor Vehi-

cles, or whatever the agency is called in your area. You will need several forms of iden-tifi cation, two of which will be your marriage certifi cate proving change of name and your social security card. Also have your old drivers license with you.3. Passport: Contact the Passport Agency to update your name on your pass-port. You may or may not be charged for the new issue depending upon how long it's been since you applied for a passport.4. Insurance policies: If you have health insurance, life insurance, or a 401(k)

plan, you should communicate your change of name to the respective companies.5. Bank accounts: Guests will likely issue gift checks in your married name or as a couple. It helps to have an account available in which to deposit those checks. You can choose to merge your banking accounts once married, or open up a joint account with your new name.6. Employer: Have your employer change your name in their records and update payroll and any other services. You will also want to update e-mail stationery to reflect your new name and have your IT director change your information for computer logins and e-mail addresses. A courtesy e-mail to clients will fill them in on your name change.7. Credit card & utility companies: Notify these companies of a change of name. Some may require written documentation to com-plete the change.8. Wills and other legal contracts: Have legal documents amend-ed to feature your updated name. You may want to change your ben-efi ciary to your husband.

PLANNER & GIFT GUIDE 2010

Music is an integral part of both the wed-ding ceremony and the reception. Music often conveys emotions that are diffi cult to put into words. Additionally, songs and music help us to remember certain key moments more easily. That's why we often associate rites of passage with the sound track of that time in our lives.Because music is such an important part of the wedding, you want to take the time and necessary precautions to avoid wedding day music slip-ups. As with most parts of the wedding process, preparation and planning -- as well as some reputable word-of-mouth recommendations -- can make selecting mu-sicians and song choices for your wedding much smoother. Consider the following:

The CeremonyCan you picture the bride and her attendants walking down the aisle without any music? Many couples give careful consideration to the reception music and leave the ceremony music to chance -- not a good idea.Ask your house of worship if they have any rules regarding song selec-tions, as well as regulations on house or outside musicians. Then work your music selections according to these guidelines. While traditionally brides enter to "Here Comes the Bride," stricter houses of worship may not allow this tune, or brides simply may prefer something else. Classical, hymnal or other processional music is often appropriate. Just keep in mind the tempo and length of the song so that it will match the gait and size of the wedding party.Chances are the ceremony musicians will be different from those who are playing at your reception. Therefore this may require a little extra planning. If your house of worship provides the musician(s), arrange to sit down with this individual to talk about styles and what to expect. Also arrange to have payment or a tip provided for his or her services.

The ReceptionYou will likely have more wiggle room with your choices at the recep-tion, depending upon the venue. Brides and grooms usually use live performers or DJs who play pre-recorded music. Some performers offer

a combination of both.Consider the style of your wedding. Will it be formal or informal? Traditional or contem-porary? Aim for music that suits the style or theme of the wedding. A full-piece orchestra may seem out of place at a casual party. When you are choosing music, consider your tastes, but the tastes of your guests as well. While you won't be able to please each and every person, the wider the range of music you have available, the greater the chance of people getting up to dance and enjoying themselves.

ContractsOnce you decide on your ceremony and re-ception musicians, it's important to sign a contract and work out payment agreements. Having the information in writing protects you in case the musicians don't deliver what

was expected. Here are some points that should be covered in the contracts.• Price, deposit amount, additional charges (travel, food requirements,

etc.), and overtime rates.• The number of musicians who will be attending and what instru-

ments they play, in the case of a wedding band.• Names of specifi c people you want, such as DJ, lead vocalist, emcee,

and what compensation will be made if these people are not avail-able.

• Date and hours they'll be working.• Additional services, such as dramatic lighting, dancers or party fa-

vors.• Number of breaks and how the break time will be covered, such as

with recorded music.• Style of dress or costumes.• Specifi c music requests and list of your wedding attendants so they'll

have the right names if announcements are being made.Be sure to ask friends, relatives and others for musician recommenda-tions. When you attend weddings, take the cards of performers you enjoyed. Contact prospective performers early on to ensure your wed-ding date is available.

PLANNER & GIFT GUIDE 2010

Weddings natu-rally involve a lot of gifts - both giving and receiving. Learn how be a gracious gift-receiver by cre-ating your perfect gift registry, and also be a great gift-giver by choosing unique wedding gifts or per-sonalized wedding gifts to give to your wedding party.

Gift Registry BasicsOne of the fun things you get to do when planning your wedding is registering for gifts. But make it easy for yourself and your guests - be organized and offer them a wide selection in both price and types of gifts. You’ll want to set up your registry soon after your engagement, since some people like to purchase gifts early to congratulate you or to give to you as a shower gift.

You should decide as a couple what you want to register for...and don’t feel like you have to go the traditional route. If you don’t like to cook, don’t register for elaborate cookware that you’ll never use. It’s per-fectly fi ne to register for tools or electronicsor even camping gear...as long as it is something you’ll use. But do be open to how things might change in the future. Just because you don’t host dinner parties now doesn’t mean you won’t in the future.

Since it’s not appropriate for the bride or groom to ask for wedding gifts, you need to be careful with how you let people know where

you’re registered. Do not include registry information with your wedding invita-tions-- word of mouth is the appropriate way to disseminate this information. It can also be listed on your bridal shower invitations since the invitation does not come from you. You can also include the information on your wedding web page.

And remember to be gracious. Thank-you notes for gifts received before the wedding should be sent within two weeks of arrival. Notes for gifts received on or after the wedding day should be sent within a month of your return from the honeymoon.

Wedding Party GiftsIt is traditional for the bride and groom to select personalized or unique wedding gifts for the members of their wedding party. What works for one person might not work for another, and thankfully, you don’t have to give everyone the same gift - but do try to keep them in the same price range.

Make sure your gift is timeless and multi-functional. A popular type of personalized gift for your wedding party is anything that is engraved or monogrammed. Engraved bracelets and compacts and monogrammed tote bags or cosmetics bags are thoughtful choices for bridesmaids. Likewise, engraved money clips, cuff links or fl asks and monogrammed

duffel bags are popular choices for groomsmen. Personalized wedding gifts are a great way to thank the special people who are taking part your big day.

Keep in mind that there is no need to be extravagant or lavish while choosing unique wedding party gifts. These keepsake gifts are not judged by their size or price, but rather by the thought behind them.

Parents’ GiftsIt has recently become customary to give a gift to your parents as a token of appreciation for all they have done for you and to symbolize your continu-ing family ties. This gift can be many things: a nicely framed photo from the wedding, an engraved bowl or vase, a plaque that bears a heartfelt poem, a nice clock or a wine bottle carrier are all acceptable gifts. Just keep in mind their interests and their level of sen-timentality.

Wedding FavorsGiving your guests a memento, or favor, on your wedding day is a long-standing tradition. It’s a way to thank your family and friends for helping you celebrate your special day. From personalized to home-made, there are endless ideas for wedding favors.

* Give traditional favors based on your family’s cultural/religious/historical background. * Give a favor that symbolizes a favorite hobby or activity you and your groom share.

PLANNER & GIFT GUIDE 2010

Worried that your perfect wedding will break the bank? Here are 10 ways to have a fabulous wedding, even on a small budget. Remem-ber...it’s not how much you spend, but how you spend it!

As a young girl, you probably dreamed of having a picture-perfect fairy tale wedding. You planned and practiced and just waited for Prince Charming to come along and sweep you off your feet. He fi nally did, and now it’s time to turn that dream wedding into a reality. But, yikes! When did weddings get so expensive? During all of that child-hood wedding dreaming, money was never an object (because really, is there even money in Fairly Tale Land? If there is, it probably grows on trees). But don’t despair. By using some (or all) of the tips below, you can create a wedding that’s tasteful and elegant, even on a small budget.

1. Budget BluffingSet a budget that’s slightly smaller than you can actually afford. There are always last-minute expenses that must be met, but if you keep the bulk of your expenses within your predetermined smaller budget, you’ll be able to pay for the unexpected costs that pop up.

2. Choose your BattlesDecide what’s most important to you, those one or two things you won’t compromise on, whether it be your wedding gown, photogra-pher, invitations or cake. After accounting for this must-have, adjust your budget accordingly and try to keep the remainder of your ex-penses within it.

3. Say it SimplyInvitations can easily cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. For less formal weddings, you can have guests call or email their RSVPs to you, eliminating the need for RSVP cards and their matching stamped envelopes. (Just think: if you send out 100 invitations, you’re saving $44 in postage alone.)

4. Who’s WhoSure, it’s tempting to invite your second cousin’s third grade teacher, but it will cost you. One of the most effective ways you can cut back on invitation and reception expenses is to cut your guest list. Limit your guest list to close friends and family, not people you haven’t seen or talked to since 2nd grade.

5. Creative ShoppingDollar stores, thrift stores and garage sales can provide a wealth of low-cost wedding and reception decorations...and they look like they cost full price!Strands of lights, faux fl orals, linens, balloons and more can be found for extraordinarily low prices at these stores. Be sure to look after holidays, as this is when items such as these go on clearance or are donated to thrift stores.

6. To Updo or not to Updo? That is the question.Does everyone in your wedding party really have to get their hair and makeup done by Mr. Christophe at that exclusive salon? Probably not. If you feel you need a special updo, by all means, go for it. After all, you’re the bride. Otherwise, have your bridal party do their own hair and makeup. Chances are, it will turn out better anyway, since they know what works for them. You’ll avoid ending up with bridesmaids that look like very formal clowns with shellacked hair, and save some money, too.

7. Time is on your side.Consider having your wedding early afternoon. There’s less demand for that time slot, but most importantly, you can get away with serving just cake and punch or small fi nger foods at the reception. The occa-sion will seem more intimate, and your guests won’t necessarily be expecting a meal (since the reception doesn’t fall during a mealtime). Best of all, you’ll save thousands!

8. For Everything There is a Season......but it might be more cost-effective to get married during the off-season. Spring and summer are the most popular wedding seasons, and prices for venues rise accordingly. Choosing a fall or winter wed-ding not only gives you beautiful decorating themes to work with, but also offers more affordable venue options.

9. Party OnSure, anyone can have a beautiful reception in the ball room of an exclusive hotel. But with a little creativity (think strands of lights, faux fi cus trees, candles, etc.,) even the local lodge can be transformed into a beautiful reception location. Remember, the lights are usually dimmed, and your guests are there to celebrate with you, not critique the crystal chandeliers (or lack thereof). Choosing a more affordable reception location will leave you with more money to spend on food, drinks and decorations - or even your new life together.

10. All Dressed UpIf you’re like most brides, you already have a picture of your perfect wedding gown in your head. But if you’re really interested in saving money, keep your options open. You might be surprised by how much you like other (translation: less expensive) styles of dresses once you try them on. Plus, less-expensive dresses can often be uniquely embel-lished and still cost less than the whole Cinderella-type dress.

What? No really...I didn’t know what these were. Here’s the scoop: save the date cards are sent to guests pretty much the second after the groom pops the question, so that guests can plan ahead. If you send out your announcements 8-10 weeks prior to your wedding, there is probably no need for save the date cards. However, if you have friends or relatives who will be traveling great distances (especially from other countries), a little heads-up would be nice. However, this can be done by greeting card, letter or phone call. That should be suffi cient to “save the date.”
