Working Group #2 ReportBuenos Aires, 20 April 2010

What Is “Benchmarking”?

Process that considers the impact design and operational variables have on the reliability of an electric generating unit or group of similar units.

Uses the design characteristics and operational factors of the target unit groups as its starting point.

Creates a statistically valid group of units having similar design and operational variables.

The peer group can be used to set realistic goals for power unit improvements.

PGP Database Update

Who used the PGP database in 2009-2010?

In the past year, 150 people have registered with the PGP database, which is two steps further than just a visit to the site.

Many more people visited the site over the same period.

Users include universities, WEC member committees, consulting groups, national laboratories, electric utilities, and more.

PGP Database Update

Two types of data collected by PGP database

Unit-by-unit data

Groups of units

• Statistics of Unit-by-Unit

Years reported: 115

Units reported: 48,498

Total reported capacity: 7,748,544 MW

Average capacity: 161.83 MW

Examples of Benchmarking Data

Design data

Manufacturer of the steam generator

Classifies steam generators pressure as subcritical or supercritical

Type of fuel firing system installed on the steam generator (Tangential, cyclone, front-fired, etc)

Pressurized or balanced furnace draft system

PGP Database – Design Selection Screen

• The user can select as many items from the design selections as the want.

• Design criteria can be selected from a list of items (drop-down box) or select your own range of pressures.

Examples of Benchmarking Data

Operating Data

Year the unit was placed in commercial service

MW rating of the turbine

Number of hours unit generating annually.

Number of Reserve Shutdown Hours experienced by the generating unit

Net Output Factor is the Net Actual Generation divided by the sum of the Service Hours and the Net Maximum Capacity of the unit.

• The user can select as many items from the operating selections as the want.

• Operating criteria can be selected from ranges selected.

Confidentiality of PGP Database

•All data sent to PGP database is confidential! •All data is encrypted by the reporting companiesbefore entry into the PGP so that no one can identify another unit by name, description, KPI, etc. •No “real time” data; only historical•NERC GADS has such confidence in PGP that it reports its 5,800 units annually to PGP.•Competitors will not have access to your data!

GADS Update

WEC PGP Workshop Buenos Aires, Argentina© World Energy Council

GADS Update

Operating by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) for collecting power plant data in North America.

Collects outage data on 5,800 generating units.

782,000+ MW of fossil-steam, nuclear, gas turbines, combined cycles, hydro, etc. from USA, Canada, Malaysia, Ireland, Israel, and Brazil.

GADS is in the process to become mandatory reporting for generators in the USA and possibility Canada

Goal is 950,000 MW NDC

GADS Update – Wind and Solar

Started beta testing in 2009 and collected data on 1,266 WTG in 2009.

Will add hourly generation from wind farms to GADS in 2011 to meet dispatch and planning needs.

Preparing to collect solar data starting in 2011
