BEAUTIFICATION

As always, May and June were very busy months for Beautification! Many thanks to all of the Beautification Committee Members and other Volunteers for sprucing up our Community Gardens at Seasongood, Marion, Dana Triangle, Washington and more! They look amazing! Special shout outs to Mary Piper who works very hard on her new flower bed at Asmann and Victory and who consistently picks up litter on Asmann each day she works at that bed. We owe Mary a great deal of thanks for her passion for gardening and her initiative in creating new gardens where there were once just weeds and debris. And to Richard Jackson for his generous monetary donations to our Beautification Committee and the amazing gardens he cares for and continually improves upon, including new community gardens at the Round-about and Marion, not to mention the long standing efforts of spectacular gardens at Dana Triangle! Richard thank you for your generosity always and thank you for your beautiful flower beds for everyone to enjoy! Save the Date 9/16/17. We have been informed that Xavier University will be having a community action day on 9/16/17, and they would like to partner again with North Avondale. We need community volunteers to sign up to work with Xavier to help clean up our streets. Meeting place and time will be determined and announced in August. Also, the Park is in need of some people who want to volunteer in Seasongood Square Park. There are some spaces in the park that are in need of some TLC. Some beds need to get attention now. Please do let me know if you want to adopt a garden or can volunteer for the special projects by contacting me at [email protected]. Thank you,

Emily Harten Beautification Chair

To pay the Parks to maintain the flower pots along Reading Road, we are taking donations for 2017. HEALTH & WELLNESS

Recalling Birth Control Pills Did you know that the FDA is recalling birth control pills? The pills “Mibelas 24 F-E” Lot # L600518 expiration date: May 2018 were placed in the wrong order. The first

four days are placebo tablets. This mistake could result in unintended pregnancy. If you have such a pack of pills, call your doctor immediately and return them to your pharmacy.

TIPS FOR MAKING THIS SUMMER HEALTHY 1. Take a vacation, if possible, or do whatever is necessary to

lower your blood pressure, heart rate and stress. Sometimes a small change in venue relieves stress.

2. Make a habit of walking in the cool of the morning or late evenings. Brisk walking or jogging helps you stay in shape and doing that before it gets too hot can actually be quite satisfying.

3. Plan your meals to include fresh produce. Visit Gabriel’s Place (3618 Reading Road, 45229) for menu ideas and free meals.

4. Drink low calorie beverages, seltzer water, unsweetened tea and fresh fruit juices. Skip the sugary drinks.

5. Enjoy the outdoors. Cincinnati has great parks and recreational facilities. Spend time outdoors. The moods of some people (especially children) improve when they are outdoors. he longer days allow for more social activities that the entire family can enjoy.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

kids alike can sample the region's best outdoor recreation and nature awareness programs during Great Outdoor Weekend with 100+ free activities in 3 states over 2 days.

9. Equity: Cincinnati just received a Playful City USA designation by ensuring that kids in our community, particularly from low-income families, get the active play they need to thrive. Local initiatives connecting low-access communities to the great outdoors include Outdoor Adventure Clubs, Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo, and Everybody’s Treehouse.

10. Best in Class: We've got the greenest zoo, the oldest observatory, and the largest member supported nature center in America, a certified green marathon, a bike share program with over 50 stations, and world class climbing just two hours away at Red River Gorge.

Green Umbrella is the leading alliance working to maximize the environmental sustainability of Greater Cincinnati. With major funding from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and Interact for Health, we drive collaboration to fuel measurable improvements in key areas of sustainability. Our vision is to have the region recognized as one of the top 10 most sustainable metro areas in the nation by 2020. For more information or to become a member, please visit www.greenumbrella.org.

Greater Cincinnati is the Outdoor Mecca of the Midwest – Here’s Why

In honor of Great Outdoors Month and the third time that Cincinnati will be hosting the Midwest Regional Sustainability Summit – both taking place this June, Green Umbrella compiled the top 10 reasons why Greater Cincinnati is the outdoor mecca of the Midwest. To see how the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky metro area ranks in terms of access to outdoor adventure, greenspace, and locally-grown food, we gathered national accolades and asked park managers, regional planners, health department officials, conservation leaders, outdoor outfitters, canoe liveries, paddling enthusiasts, bicycling and trail advocates, local food gurus, and more. Here’s what they said:

1. Trails: Where else in the Midwest can you access 23,000 miles of long distance trails and a local network of 330 miles of multi-use trails, 250 miles of hiking trails, 80 miles of on-road bike lanes, and 60 miles of mountain-biking trails? We're also home to the Little Miami Scenic Trail – the third longest paved trail in the country.

2. Greenspace: Our verdant topography features scenic hilltops and abundant greenspace – over 101,000 acres of protected greenspace to be exact. A leader in these conservation efforts is Great Parks of Hamilton County, which alone preserves and protects over 17,000 acres of greenspace.

3. Parks: Cincinnati's park system is ranked Top 10 by the Trust for Public Land which ranks the "Parkscore" of the 100 Largest Cities (and we have the most top 10 rankings). Local favorites include Smale Riverfront Park, Washington Park, and Eden Park but don’t forget to check out Mt. Airy Forest.

4. Paddling: We have 5 rivers (FIVE!) that flow year-round with nearly 6,000 stream miles in the region which support 14 canoe/kayak/SUP board liveries. One-of-a-kind local events celebrating these waterways include The Ohio River Paddlefest - one of America’s largest paddling events and the largest SUP race in Midwest, and the oldest triathlon with a canoe/kayak leg replacing the traditional swim portion at Morgan’s Canoe.

5. Tree Canopy: Ohio has been ranked #1 in Tree City USA Communities for 37 years by The Arbor Day Foundation, and regionally over 280,000 trees have been planted through the Taking Root campaign.

6. Outfitters: We are proud to have over 60 outdoor outfitters and bike shops to support the outdoor active living that we enjoy year-round with our 4-season moderate climate.

7. Local Food: With more than 90 restaurants and cafes that source locally, nearly 60 farmers markets including Findlay Market – Cincinnati’s thriving open-air market, PLUS 34 craft breweries, our region's commitment to locally-grown food is serious (and seriously delicious).

8. Sample the Outdoors: Every September, adults and

I've lived in North Avondale for about 3-4 years now. Recently, I've noticed 2-3 strange cars (not neighbors) in the parking lot where my apartment is located. The cars are here early evenings 3-4 times a week. There are always at least 3-5 people in the car. Clearly there is something suspicious going on here. I live in The Alston Park apartments on Glenwood Ave. (313 to 415). I've lived here for about 3 years and never experienced any issues until mid-late spring. I'm concerned for the safety of myself, my son and fellow neighbors. Please keep alert and let me know if you know anything more. Thanks!

Lynette, [email protected] Hello neighbors, if you are spring cleaning or downsizing

or just have furniture that you don't want anymore, please consider calling the New Life Furniture bank to pick up your unwanted items. The New Life Furniture bank is similar to a food bank and is the only furniture bank in the greater Cincinnati area. All donations are tax-deductible. Telephone number is 513.313.0530. Donations are used to set up housing for those fleeing domestic abuse or who have been formerly homeless!

Thank you! I have personally worked with this organization for over six years and your items will be going to a very good cause. Jolene Struebbe

Cincinnati STAND is a youth-led campaign to encourage kids, ages 11-17, to stand up and speak out against tobacco. The group aims to eliminate the cultural acceptance of tobacco use and counter tobacco advertising. Members of the group are available to speak to get their message out and expand their platform. The Cincinnati STAND group will share their anti-tobacco message with their peers by using traditional and non-traditional marketing channels, such as participating in community parades and public events, presenting to youth groups and community partners, distributing information in their neighborhoods, sharing content on social media and creating artwork with anti-tobacco messages.

New School Montessori 6th graders donned latex gloves and forceps as they practiced suturing deep cuts in cadaver pigs’ feet. TNSM parent and physician’s assistant, Jen Garrett, works with U.C.’s liver transplant program and began her lesson by leading a presentation on organ donation and its importance in savings lives. Students had an opportunity to meet and ask questions of a liver transplant recipient who shared his experience. After the lecture, they palpated chicken

hearts and livers and learned basic suturing techniques from surgery residents who observed as students practiced closing wounds.
