Virtual Project Management

description

In this keynote presentation, Matthew will review the workflow process DeWalt used to capture an entire 200,000 sq.ft building in just 2 days with the use of a FARO Focus3D Laser Scanner, register the entire project without the use of any scan targets using SCENE, and upload the data using a new web-based application known as Web Share Cloud. This workflow solved many of the complications in the beginning stages of this project, and will continue to help the project through its lifecycle over the next couple years.

3D Laser Scanning (The Entire 200,000 SqFt Area)

Deliver a complete 3D colorized point cloud (For site visualization in Navisworks, Autodesk Recap, and AutoCAD)

Web-share Cloud Project (Ability to walk through the entire building with picture quality data, able to pull measurements, make notes, and easily share site walk through with other sub-contractors.)

Planned Workflow

THINK AHEAD!

Page 5: WebShare Cloud Workflow by Matt Byrd

Quick turn around time: 2 days to scan the entire 200,000 square foot building.

Target-less Registration (the building had many different rooms, some with equipment, small hallways, multiple levels etc.)

Quality and Resolution settings Due to a short time frame, settings were requested to be lowered so we could complete the scanning process very fast, which created challenges in point cloud data registration and panoramic viewing.

Faro Focus 3D, 2 field crew members, approx. 15 hours on site (including the initial job walk, photos, planning, etc.)

Using a Site Plot Plan, map out goal scan area per day, plan estimated “best route”.

Choose a starting location, begin first scan asap.

Walk through the site, map out scan locations and best route to capture all data efficiently.

Complete as many scans per day as possible in approved time frame.

At the end of each work day, Review what data was captured, and set a plan for the next day.

Field Collection Workflow

When scanning for Target-less Registration,

Make sure you can see similar surfaces and objects from one scan to the next.

[Replace using your targets with shapes in the environment of your site]

Add a few extra scans to ensure good overlap (Even if you turn the resolution or quality down)

Change your scan placement mode.

USE: Cloud 2 Cloud (default)

When using Large Data sets, you can increase the subsampling to

increase speed.

WEBSHARE CLOUD!

Why has DeWalt added Webshare Cloud to its workflow ?

It’s a simple addition to the existing workflow. (Create & upload directly from your project in Scene)

It offers our clients a new deliverable.(You may find clients that have a specific problem that WebShare Cloud can help solve)

Its cost effective, secure, and well maintained.

1) Visit the site! This is critical on any large project, estimating the unknown can be risky! (and possibly expensive!)

2) Communication and a working relationship with your client is KEY!

3) Be very specific in your communication with clients, and your contract details: -Exactly what is to be scan/modeled - What level of detail – Deliverables ?

4) Workflow Planning: Who will be handling what task ? What software will you be using ? Know the answer to these questions before the project even starts!

5) Safety: All personal safety equipment is up-to-date ? Are there any specific requirements or guidelines we need to follow while working in this facility ?

3D Project - Tips & Tricks

Page 42: WebShare Cloud Workflow by Matt Byrd

6) Save & BACK-UP your work on a daily / hourly basis!.. (When software decides to crash, or technology shuts down, you will be prepared to pick up where you left off, instead of losing days, and hours of work..)

7) Predefine a rotation and translation scheme prior to project (If placing on a coordinate system is requested)

8) Integrate new tools into your workflow, that offer time savings and value to both you and your client! (Such as Scene 5.3 Cloud2Cloud Registration)

9) Last but not least.. CUSTOMER SERVICE!

Be personable! When you hand over the final deliverable, ask them to review and give feedback. (IE. How could we make our next project even more efficient and customized for you? Do you have specific likes or dislikes about our delivered service / products ?)
