In the year 2004 on March 11th, in the vicinity of Madrid (11-m) one of the largest Islamic attacks in Spain took place.4 trains of Madrid commuters were bombed out by a cell of terrorist (soldiers of Allah) as police revealed at a judicial investigation. It was the second major bomb attack in Spain. The attack occurred at the rush hour in the morning (between 07:36 and 07:40).192 people died and 1858 were injured in the outskirts of Madrid (Atocha) and this was one of the major attacks in Europe.

The XXVII European Swimming Championship was held in Madrid between 5 and 16 May 2004 under the organization of the European Swimming League (LEN) and the Real Federación Española de Natación.

Enclosures used for specialties were: M-86 Swimming Center: swimming and diving. Embalse de San Juan: open waters swimming.

Between 8th and 14th of 2004 May there a was jumping Championship in Europe.

On April 18th 2004 the European Championships of Triathlon were held.
