Psychological Problems in children

There seem to be an increase
In the number of psychological problems that we are seeing in children. This might be because of :– More reporting– More awareness– Greater availability of expertise– Actual increase in total number of disorders
seen
What are the common disorders?
• Attention Deficit Disorders with/without Hyperkinesis
• Depression• Specific Learning Disabilities• Autistic Spectrum Disorder• Oppositional Defiant Disorders• Conduct Disorders
There are also a number of problems associated with issues such as living in a household wherein there is parental disharmony, or wherein one parent is a substance abuser, or where the family is made up of a single parental unit.
These cause a number of reactions that might need to be deal with by a mental health expert.
Special problems
Substance abuse in a child or an adolescent
Problems related to child abuse
Special problems
Issues relating to sexuality
Special problems
Problems related to suicidal ideation and action
Special problems
For each of these, a proper evaluation is necessary before a diagnosis is made.
Often there is use of a multi-disciplinary unit…comprising of Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Occupational Therapist and Special educator.
Medication may be indicated wherein necessary.
