Log & Inspection Changes

• Increase in use of electronic logs• New rules from FMCSA in summer

2013– Haven’t changed since, but inspection

practices have

• Differences state by state• FMCSA guidance

Page 7: Webinar - BigRoad @ 2014 CVSA Conference & Exhibition

We Understand!

• Working closely with law enforcement and serving the needs of our customers (truckers and fleets), we are exposed to logs and both sides of the issue more than others are

• Bridging the gap• Priorities in common between inspectors and

drivers/fleets: safety, ease of inspection

E-Log Stakeholders

1. Log Providers

2. Law Enforcement

3. Customers

Common Inspection Scenarios

100% elimination of format & manner errorsThere are all sorts of different inspections on a daily basis:• No problem inspecting on screen, love it• Some with no idea how to inspect on screen, never seen it

before• Some want printing, then let them leave as soon as they see

printer has power

Page 10: Webinar - BigRoad @ 2014 CVSA Conference & Exhibition

Worst case scenario

With paper log

With electronic log

Guidance provided clarity

• Definitely legal to use electronic logbook• Inspector can choose to view on device• Inspector can demand printed copies• No need to pre-print• Inspector can accept fax, email• Electronic signature is same as paper signature

Page 12: Webinar - BigRoad @ 2014 CVSA Conference & Exhibition

Legality vs. Safety

• Are electronic logs being targeted? If so, why?

• Is printing really related to safety?• Electronic logbooks actually make drivers

safer/more compliant

Page 13: Webinar - BigRoad @ 2014 CVSA Conference & Exhibition

Example; Missouri

• Some inspectors/states insist on printed copies even though we don’t agree

• Missouri explanation – Inspector can’t be liable for device, can’t use own paper/ink/fax machine etc.

Page 14: Webinar - BigRoad @ 2014 CVSA Conference & Exhibition

Gobbell Transportation Petition

• Petitioning FMCSA to reduce penalty for not being able to print

• Argument: It’s not actually unsafe. – Out of service penalty is way too harsh

• Logs viewable, complete, easy to inspect• Discuss option of signing a waiver protecting

inspector from liability for handling device• Enforcement treating no printer as no logs at all,

doesn’t make sense!

Get Started (properly)

Electronic Logbook

1. Try out free driver app

2. 30 day free trial fleet app

3. Get a printer and throw out your paper logbook!

Tip!If you practice on BigRoad for a week or two before you actually switch and start using it as your logs, you can have your previous 7 days in there so you’re ready to go for real when it’s time to switch

ELD 2015 Mandatory?

Page 18: Webinar - BigRoad @ 2014 CVSA Conference & Exhibition

How do I do my part?

mode on device
