Finding The Right Flooring
ALUMINIUM - CODE AAluminium is usually used when weight or corrosion is an issue. Typical applications are in seweragetreatment facilities and other aggressive corrosive environments. Aluminium can also be used incommercial applications including sunscreens, privacy screens and security screens. Aluminium gratingcan also be supplied with floorplate or mesh attached if required. For further information see page 32.
STAINLESS STEEL - CODE SStainless steel is used in some chemical plant applications but more commonly where hygiene is an issueand foodstuffs are prepared. It has superior corrosion resistance to mild steel. Stainless steel can betreated with an electropolishing process. For specific information regarding availability contact your localWebforge Sales Office.
STEEL - CODE MThis is the most commonly used material and is used in all types of floor applications. It withstands impact loads well and is capable of spanning long distances. It is used extensively inpower stations, refineries, chemical plants and offshore platforms for mezzanine floors, storage racks, catwalks, and conveyor walkways. Steel grating can also be supplied with floorplate or mesh attachedif required. For further information see page 32.
FIBREGLASS - CODE I or VFRP (fibre re-inforced plastic) or fibreglass moulded grating is commonly used where a metal product isnot suitable. There are two basic types of moulded grating. Code type I uses isopthalic resin and codetype V uses vinylester resin. FRP is non-magnetic, has low thermal conductivity is non conductive andnon sparking. It is used in corrosive environments and where weight and hygiene may be issues. For further information see page 26.
EXPANDED METAL - CODE WMExpanded metal is used for mezzanine floors, catwalks, walkways and storage racks. High strength toweight ratio makes it technically applicable in many engineering, industrial and ornamental applications.Because there are no welds or joins, it operates as a structural member that distributes loads evenly overa wide area. For further information see page 28.

Type 2 3 5 Pedestrian traffic, residential use.
Type 3 4 5 Pedestrian traffic, public, AS1170
commercial and crowd use.
Type 4 5 5 General factories and workshops,
Type 4a 10 motor rooms, hand trolleys.
Type 5 7.5 5 General heavy loading areas, boiler
Type 5a 10 rooms, heavy equipment areas.
The loads applied to grating can usually be split into two basic categories:
Point Loads
These usually occur when motor driven trolleys or wheeled vehicles are run over the grating.
For point load applications please contact your local Webforge Sales Office.
Uniformly Distributed Loads (UDL)
Uniformly distributed loads are more commonly used for general walkway and flooring applications. Most standards relate the loads that floors have to withstand in this format. Some common applications are listed below.
Types of Treatment
Steel grating is available galvanised to AS/NZS4680 - Code G, to protect againstcorrosion, or bitumen dipped - Code B, or left untreated - Code U.
Aluminium flooring can be Anodised - Code A, Powder Coated - Code PC or left as Mill Finish - Code M.
Expanded metal can be supplied untreated - Code U or hot dipped galvanised to the above standard - Code G.
With the requirement to provide safe places of work, the slip resistance of theflooring and walkway products needs to be considered. On steeply sloping walkwaysbetween 150 and 200 cleats can be used to improve slip resistance. The standardsurface uses plain flat edge bar Code P - Plain but to increase slip resistance furtherthe following points should be considered:
Steel & AluminiumSerrated grating can be specified. Serrated grating is when the top of the loadbarsare notched. To specify use the Code S - Serrated.
In addition both steel and aluminium grating can improve their slip resistance by setting the direction of walking over the floor parallel to the loadbar span. Cross rods can be spaced at 100mm centres for better grip.
Fibreglass GratingFRP grating is provided with an antiskid surface. This is a coarse grit that is bonded to the top surfaces of the grating.
Expanded MetalExpanded metal slip resistance is improved if the direction of walking coincides withthe nominal short way of the mesh.

How To Order Flooring
Example of Coding
Webforge offer a range of standard treads which will meet all applications.
The following tread selections are available.
• The standard tread lengths are 750mm and 900mm and can be bolt intype or weld in type.
• The steel and stainless steel tread widths are 245mm or 285mm. The narrow tread width is used when the stringer member is a smallsection or the stair angle is steep.
• The standard bolt in end plates for the treads are shown on Page 7.
• The aluminium tread widths are 245mm or 275mm.
• The FRP tread widths are 234mm or 272mm.
• Treads are made from C325MS (serrated) for steel.
• Treads are made from A325AP (plain) for aluminium.
• Treads are made from G386IGGR for isopthalic FRP or G386VGY forvinylester FRP with an antiskid surface.
• Expanded metal is not commonly used as a tread material.
• Twist rods are purposely non aligned for safety reasons.
Nosing
Webforge recommends that steel, aluminium and stainless steel stair treadsare fitted with an abrasive grit yellow nosing. FRP treads are supplied with ablack antiskid nosing. This complies with the safety requirements that theedge of the tread should be clearly visible against the background and thetread surface should be slip resistant. Other nosing are available on request.
1. Select the flooring pattern type required from the product range by referring to the loading classificationdata and pattern types on pages 2 and 3.
2. Nominate the material type code required by referring to the material options on page 1.
3. Specify the slip resistance top required by referring to the information on page 2.
4. Specify the type of treatment required by referring to the information on page 2.
5. Specify whether the grating is to be banded or just cut to size.
6. Nominate the number of panels required and provide dimensions for width and length of each panel.
7. Where large floor areas are required provide drawing of area to be covered showing:
a) All dimensions.
b) Load bar direction (Span).
c) Section size and location of support steel.
d) Location and size of cut outs and removable areas.
e) Location of kick flats, nosings and splices at penetrations.
8. Where fasteners are needed clients to indicate the type of fastening required (see page 31).
Span Direction
Most grating and expanded metal needs to be supported in a specific way. The direction that the loadbarsrun is the important direction for grating and is usually referred to as the span.
For expanded metal the span is in the direction of the strands.
Span is always the last dimension given when referencing a panel size.
Grating and expanded metal has to be supported in the span direction and does not require support on allfour sides as is the case with floorplate.
Example using standard panel width of 995mm.Webforge will supply the above platform made in standard stock width panels plus a narrow width panel cutto nearest load bar multiple. The balance allows for gaps between panels.Note: For Steel and Aluminium only.

Standard Cut Size Width Of Panels
Notes: 1. The standard lengths of all panels are 6000mm. 2. The weight of fabricated grating increases with the addition offittings, banding & treatment. The following % increases are a guide only: A&B Pattern - 12%, C&D Pattern - 14%, F Pattern -16%. 3. The table on page 20 has been arranged in increasing strength order. 4. U = Safe superimposed uniformlydistributed load in KPA (100kg/sqm = 0.98KPa) 5. D = Deflection in millimetres for the load U. 6. Mass is calculated in theuntreated condition. 7. Loads are calculated in accordance with an allowable bending stress of 171.6 MPa. 8. Loadbars areassumed to be simply supported. 9. Webforge reserves the right to use alternative section sizes provided this does not affectthe performance of the product.

Integral Construction
1. Integral, one–piece construction increasesload–bearing capabilities.
2. Load applied to a Webforge FRP bar transferred to adjoining bearing bars, assisting in loaddistribution on the grating as well as on thesupport structure.
3. Square grid patterns benefit from integralone–piece construction. Smooth resin–rich verticalsurfaces and tapered bars allow all debris to fallthrough.
4. Continuous glass fibre strand in alternating layersthoroughly wetted with polyester resin for excellentcorrosion resistance.
5. Anti–Skid Surface. The top surface has bondedcoarse grit to provide excellent skid resistance.

Manufacturing Tolerances
Depth tolerance is ± 1.5mm
FRP Grating can be manufactured from two resinsystems - Type ‘I’ (Green) uses isopthalic resinwith class 1 flame spread rating of 25 or less, while providing excellent corrosion resistance overa broad range of chemicals. Type ‘V’ (Yellow) usesvinylester resin base with class 1 flame spreadrating of 25 or less, providing superior corrosionresistance to acidic environments and moderateresistance to caustic and solvent applications.
Additional colours are available on request.
ALL - All Concentrations SAT - Saturated Solution N/R - Not Recommended. The corrosion resistance data listed above is for general information only.Resin manufacturers have provided test data which indicates the specific resin can withstand the corrosion conditions listed above.Webforge believes the data to be true and accurate but no guarantee is expressed or implied as to specific performance. Testing for specific environments is recommended.

Raised Expanded MetalExpanded metal is supplied as it comes off the machine. Thestrands and knuckles are set at a uniform angle to the plane ofthe sheet. This adds strength and rigidity, allows air circulation, and distributes the load on the metal to the supporting frames.
Expanded metal is one continuous, single sheet of mesh, produced when the sheet is sheared and stretched but is leftintact at the 'knuckles'. Available in a variety of thicknesses, with differing sizes and designs of the mesh.
Because there are no welds or joins, it operates as a structuralmember that distributes loads evenly over a wider area.
High strength to weight ratio makes it technically applicable inmany engineering industrial and ornamental applications.
No loose strands or welds means minimal wear throughconstant exposure to natural elements or other normalmovements. Fire resistant and vermin proof, it also provides ananti-slip surface for ramps, catwalks and stair treads.
Allows good visibility and the easy passage of air, heat, lightand sound while ensuring security and protection.
Expanded metal is supplied in standard panel lengths of 2300or 3000mm and standard panel widths of 600, 750, 900 and1200mm or fabricated to customers specific requirements.
