About CAYSH

CAYSH is a South London charity delivering accommodation, advice and support services for young people facing homelessness. Established in 1981, CAYSH provides a safe home for more than 220 young people each night who would otherwise be homeless. The charity also provides advice to around 2,000 others facing homelessness and other issues.

CAYSH is both a charity (‘CAYSH’) and a social enterprise (‘CAYSH Enterprise CIC’). Jointly, CAYSH has over 100 staff and volunteers operating primarily from the head office in Croydon, and income in excess of £5.5m (2014-15) – up from £2.2m in 2010. CAYSH’s services are primarily in Croydon and Sutton, with others operating out of Woolwich covering Royal Greenwich, Bromley and Lewisham. Services have been rapidly expanding over the last few years, with recent new contracts being won with the London Borough of Sutton and the London Borough of Croydon, Department for Adult Social Services, Health and Housing.

An organisation chart can be found at the end of this pack.

The charity provides safe and secure accommodation and support for young people facing homelessness. It supports young people to develop their independent living skills after they have been left without a home prematurely, and helps them access training, employment and counselling. It also works to prevent youth homelessness. A link to a table of the charity’s services is available at the end of this pack.

In 2014 CAYSH launched its social enterprise business: CAYSH Enterprise CIC (Community Interest Company). In 2014/15 CAYSH Enterprise turned over £1.2m, primarily through supply of Concierge services to support providers similar to its sister charity. Both parts of the organisation share centralised costs (HR, IT etc.) and profits from CAYSH Enterprise are used by the charity to further its aims.

CAYSH is currently seeking a new Chief Executive to help the organisation develop further in the coming years. You will lead and manage the organisation in its drive to expand and win new contracts, whilst ensuring that current contracts are maintained and delivered effectively. You will also be dealing with the challenges faced by all charities in a time of austerity and further cuts to funding for the third-sector and local government.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant charity during and important period of its evolution. CAYSH provides a valuable service to young people in need and we are looking forward to hiring a passionate and driven individual to take the organisation further forward.

5. Innovation, strategic and lateral thinking, readily able to adapt to handle ambiguity, address problems and find the most effective solution

6. An ability to delegate and see the “big picture”, not getting embroiled in any one part of management, but also never losing sight of the fundamentals, especially re finance and performance; keeps a finger on the pulse of the organisation

7. A keen, inclusive and natural relationship builder; able to work co-operatively with a range of partners and agencies to deliver services

8. Resilience and a capacity to respond calmly to, and deal effectively with crises, rapid shifts in the external perspective, ‘events’ and the unanticipated

9. Being a driver, energetic, entrepreneurial and commercially hard-headed with good business nous, always ready to swiftly seize and exploit potential opportunities

Desirable, but not strictly essential:

10.Experience of working within the public or third-sector, preferably in a high-level, managerial role, or failing that, a USP that compensates and makes you a strong and viable candidate

11.Experience of ‘change’ and the inevitable growth pains experienced by a growing organisation operating in a highly dynamic and challenging operating environment – and how these can be addressed/mitigated

12.Knowledge and awareness of both our sector and the kind of market within which we operate, including experience of diversifying revenue streams, social finance and working with consortia and partnerships

Part Two:

If invited to interview, the criteria outlined in Part One (above) will be tested further, along with the core skills and personal attributes listed as follows.

Style, skills, attitudes, behaviours:

To survive and thrive within, as well as deliver for the organisation, you …

Have empathy, patience and a passion for working with CAYSH’s client group – disadvantaged young people with troubled, if not chaotic lives; you see them as a potential asset to society rather than a problem, who just need to be equipped and guided to survive, thrive and

11

Page 12: Web viewWe are committed to employing a workforce that reflects the community we serve. Please help us to monitor our progress by completing the details below

contribute positively, and whose voice needs to be heard and embedded in all that CAYSH strives to achieve

Must, on the other hand, be hard headed, because compassion is not enough; there are lots of people out there who don’t like young people, and believe families and babies are more important; the fact that young people are our future, for whatever the reason, seems to pass them by

Are diplomatic, able to negotiate and communicate consummately with commissioners, service providers and the public

Have an infectious enthusiasm that wins people over to your side Have strong emotional intelligence (EQ), are naturally open and

honest, and easily build trust, respect and a sense of integrity with service users, staff, colleagues, stakeholders and board members

Are a community builder, respectful of the roots of CAYSH within the South London community, but keen to spread and evolve that operating model elsewhere

Are ruthlessly outcome-focused, driven by high performance and the highest of standards– from yourself and from all who work with and for you; for all your approachability, you are no soft touch

Are financially savvy, hard-nosed and very commercial when it comes to sustainability, growing the business, and what is in the best interest of CAYSH and more importantly, those whom we serve

Are a person who has faced adversity (personally or professionally, in leadership, financially or in the delivery of services) and has come out on top wiser and more astute

Unusually, do both vision/strategy and detail – and you do them very well indeed; you miss nothing and you inspire easily

Are naturally skilled and comfortable managing upwards and harnessing the skills and talents of the Board to best effect

Are a reputation builder, outgoing and comfortable networking at a high level, and focused on maintaining an organisation’s strong corporate reputation

Are one of those people who ‘just is’ able to pinpoint those who need to be sat around a table re a project or a strategy, and persuade them to attend

Part Three – Chemistry and “Fit”

We posed a series of questions on your behalf to Bob Cook, Chair of Trustees

‘What are you like to work with?’

Likes people who are open and honest about issues Likes people who present him with clear and succinct information Instinct is to be open with colleagues, and likes them to be open too

12

Page 13: Web viewWe are committed to employing a workforce that reflects the community we serve. Please help us to monitor our progress by completing the details below

Looking for someone who will create a strong and resilient working environment, with the energy and ambition to drive the organisation and our people forward in a positive and confident manner

‘And what works less well with you?’

Not so patient with people who tend to ‘waffle’ and/or overload him with information

Not so patient with people who don’t take him or the responsibilities of the Chair/Governance role seriously, or who are not straightforward with him

Not so patient with folk who are reactive rather than proactive

‘If potential candidates meet all the criteria above, then they will likely have many attractive options for their career. So why would they want to work for CAYSH?’

Any one or a combination of the following:

You would be running your own organisation and shaping it based on your vision; for the most part, the buck would stop with you

You are driven by a passion for ending the travesty that is youth homelessness

You would be leading an organisation that is really making a difference to vulnerable young people, their safety and their life chances

Successfully running an organisation like CAYSH will be a fantastic addition to your CV, and will be a stepping stone to an even larger role, whether in the charity sector or elsewhere

Whilst you might be able to get more money as a Charity Director or Corporate Manager, you won’t be running your own business and making the decisions that really matter; here, the buck will really stop with you

CAYSH focuses exclusively on young people aged 16-21. This commitment sets us apart in the eyes of commissioners, staff and young people themselves

CAYSH enjoys strong relationships with most of its commissioners, especially in Croydon, and holds all contracts available to it in the Borough; along with the CAYSH Enterprise CIC, this combination makes the organisation a strong provider of services to young people

CAYSH is one of a number of key regional players in tacking youth homelessness; and though rooted (and proud of those roots) in a locality, it could be a national player if you have the drive to make it so

You find the prospect of a role in which you will be a key player locally and meet young people on a daily basis, and at the same time be a player on the regional and national scene to be intoxicating in terms of

13

Page 14: Web viewWe are committed to employing a workforce that reflects the community we serve. Please help us to monitor our progress by completing the details below

who you meet, whom you can influence – the young people’s lives whom you can and will help turn around

Our CIC is one of the few, really successful social enterprises in the country and has attracted a lot of attention from Social Enterprise thinkers and other organisations re doing business differently; you see the inherent potential/magic of our CIC, and have ideas/business insight on how it could be better and more innovatively harnessed as an engine of growth as it evolves to take on a changing landscape

Our readiness, with the full support of the Board, for you to grow and build the organisation and the services that we offer beyond our South London roots

‘And what might they be doing now / where might they be?’

Possibly a Director/Assistant Director or similar management role in a medium-sized/large 3rd Sector organisation, social enterprise or charity

Possibly working in a senior role with one of our commissioners or similar

Possibly in a corporate role, working to win business or generate money and contracts

Possibly in a leadership role within a social enterprise/ an acknowledged and self-professed expert on social finance

Possibly possessing a mix of cross-sector experience and looking to work specifically with young people
