Welcome, Volunteers!! We are so glad to have you here. Thank you so much for spending time with our students, improving the educational opportunities that our children receive at BCN. Welcome, Volunteers!!

We are so glad to have you here. Thank you so much for spending time with our students, improving the educational opportunities that our children receive at BCN. You will be involved in a wide variety of activities, and will stay busy!!

Here are some general guidelines…. Always check in at the office with Deb, and pick up a ‘Parent

Volunteer’ lanyard to wear all day. While you are helping children throughout the school, we know

that it is important to also spend some valuable time with your own child. Please join us for a complimentary breakfast each time you volunteer, or stay after your session and join your child for a complimentary lunch. It’s a fun way to meet your child’s classmates, listen to their interesting conversations, and enjoy some time together.

You will have a scheduled half an hour to visit your child’s classroom each week. This is a great time to pull up a chair alongside your son or daughter and spend some school time together. We ask that you use a quiet voice as you sit together, so the teacher can maintain an educational flow. If other students get distracted by you, just whisper remind them to focus on the instruction.

When listening to student readers, you are allowed to help them with words when they get ‘stuck’. You can either work through the sounds of the word with them, or provide the word after they have tried it. A good strategy is to have them repeat the sentence again, so that the new word gets a bit more practice.

Student behaviors may occur when you are supervising. Be polite but firm. You have the right to enforce school rules (work quietly, stay on task, etc.) If a student is disrespectful to you, please report this to the classroom teacher.

The teachers have been asked to stay on schedule. They will definitely greet you and introduce you to the class, but will get right back to business!! They are very glad to have you in the classroom, but will not spend a lot of time visiting because we really want to keep our educational focus.

Please maintain confidentiality. The ability level of a child that you assist, and other ‘personal’ information should not be discussed with others. Please respect the different challenges that our students may face.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let Deb know in the front office (646-6202) so we can adjust our plans.

Thank you so much for being here. We know that it takes a lot of organization in your daily life to make time for volunteering. Please know that it does make a great difference to our kids!!
