Directed research projects on law enforcement, prosecution, and court operations, the deterrent effect of capital punishment, police role in arrest convictability, an empirical test of the prisoner's dilemma, the drugs-crime connection, sentencing policy, the federal justice system, criminal justice performance measurement, the prediction of recidivism, selective incapacitation, victimization, and plea bargaining policy. Became director of research in 1977, expanded the research program significantly, and recruited and helped to develop several outstanding researchers, directing a program of over $5 million of federal and privately supported research projects.
