So I blitzed the editing in one evening and completed my first couple of rough cuts. I began by renaming all the shots, using my shot list. This made it very easy to edit, as I knew as soon as the clip was uploaded, which ones I would be cutting up first. Having watched the clips through to name most, I already had an idea, which clips were going where. My initial thought was to begin with a conventional LS, this changed when I saw the CU in shadows and how going from the close up to the long shot looked smoother. I included a zoom envelope shown in image 1, which made the footage flow nicely. Prior to using the envelope it was a very choppy edit from the CU to the LS.

The effect of Mr. Jones, walking out of the shadows was a happy accident as the 2-point lighting (natural) worked nicely to create a shadow, which the character could walk out of as he moved towards the camera, indicating to the audience his ‘shady’ intentions.

I knew we had filmed the scene to have the man make a few simple actions like look at his phone, turn a corner, look through a window and enter a room. I used these actions to be my cues for where I would place my edits. I also knew that we’d filmed these actions two or three times to ensure different angles I could cut to while the action was taking place, thus making simple actions seem more dramatic. This was of course aided by the inclusion of trained thespians.

In the image above, I had to crop out the left side as you could clearly see that Mr. Jones was not in the shot/room and should be based on the narrative. I decided to crop the image using the pan/crop tool, which brought up the tool pictured in the middle of the frame which lets the editor room sections of the footage, you can also create a camera pan effect if the camera work is too still and

needs some movement. This is a handy tool and in this instance made it unnecessary to re-film which would have been more time consuming.

While editing this footage, I found it easier to edit by clicking on the plus button. This stretches out the time and makes the clip take up more space. I did this too see specific how long my hand was in the bag for and how long it was held out of the bag. By trimming down the time it was out of the bag, made it look like I would still be drawing the gun from the bag while Gethin drew his weapon.

I played around a lot with the sound and the gun shot. I wanted the edits to be quick to get across the speed with which we were both pulling out our guns. I wanted to be sure that Gethin was shown to be the quicker. On my first edit, I seemed to hesitate with the gun. It looked like I was giving Gethin time to pull out his gun which looked silly. I then used the multi-trim tool to edit in my fumbling for the gun and pulling it out part way, then cut to the shot of Gethin pulling his gun from his back, then cut to Gethin’s gun pointing at me to show he was quicker. I then cut to the outside shot again due to lack of special effects.

Most of the people I have shown the clip to (wife, yr13 pupils media and other) have commented on this angle saying that they like seeing through the door.
