The Catholic Church has decided to excommunicate a priest in the city of Bauru (329 km from São Paulo) who walked away from his religious activities after declaring his support to the gay community. The decision was announced by the Diocese of the city in a statement signed by the Diocesan Council of Priests, which consists of ten priests from the Council's Summit.

In their statement, the Diocese claims that his "acts created a great scandal and hurt ecclesial communion". The controversy around Roberto Francisco Daniel, 48, a.k.a. "Padre Beto" (Priest Beto), started last week when he received an ultimatum from the Bishop of Bauru to redeem himself and "confess his mistake" in an online statement.

In the video, the priest says that there is the possibility of love between two people of the same sex and questions concepts of marital fidelity, claiming that extramarital cases are not betrayals if the relationship is "open".

Despite the demand for a retraction, the priest stood by his declaration and announced he would be withdrawing from religious activities. The case sparked reactions from Catholics and also demonstrations of support from people who attended his sermons.

In Bauru, he is known for criticizing Catholic Dogmas and is famous for his style. He writes in newspapers, has written books, is a radio show host, frequents bars and wears piercings, rings, and Che Guevara and rock'n roll themed T-shirts.
